Laboratory consumables are disposable or limited-reuse items that come into direct contact with samples, reagents, or instruments during experimental workflows. They include microplates (96-well, 384-well), sealing films (polyester, aluminum foil, polypropylene), pipette tips (filtered, non-filtered, wide-bore), centrifuge and transport tubes (1.5 mL to 50 mL), PCR strip tubes, and cell culture vessels. Selecting the right consumables for each workflow reduces contamination risk and preserves sample integrity from collection through downstream analysis. Choose consumables rated for your application's temperature range, sterility requirement, and instrument compatibility before ordering.

Application and Workflow
PCR and qPCR workflows require low-profile plates and optically clear or foil sealing films; ELISA requires non-pierceable polyester films that eliminate edge effects; cell culture requires breathable or tissue-culture-grade vessels.
Material Compatibility
Polypropylene (PP) resists solvents and withstands temperatures from −80 °C to +120 °C, making it the standard for PCR tubes and cryogenic storage. Polystyrene (PS) offers optical clarity for absorbance-based assays.
Sterility and Purity Grade
Many workflows require DNase-free, RNase-free, and PCR-inhibitor-free certification — especially RNA extraction and qPCR. Confirm the certificate of analysis (CoA) before purchasing.
Instrument Compatibility
Automation-compatible tips and plates carry platform-specific tolerances for Eppendorf, Thermo Fisher, Agilent, and Beckman Coulter liquid handlers. Using mismatched consumables can cause misfires or seal failures.
Format and Scale
96-well plates cover most routine assays; 384-well formats reduce reagent use by up to 4× for high-throughput screening. Deep-well plates (1–2 mL per well) suit sample prep and compound storage.
Temperature ratings differ significantly by consumable type. Sealing films for cold storage tolerate −80 °C to +120 °C; standard polyester films typically rate −40 °C to +120 °C. Polypropylene centrifuge tubes tolerate autoclave temperatures (121 °C). Transport tubes used for biological specimens should meet UN3373 / IATA P650 requirements if shipped. Many distributors list the same SKUs under different brand names; verifying the actual manufacturer and lot certification avoids receiving uncertified substitutes.
