Liquid Handling Products for Accurate Laboratory Workflows

Liquid handling products are the consumables and accessories used to aspirate, dispense, and transfer precise volumes of liquids in laboratory workflows — including pipette tips (universal fit, filtered, low-retention), serological pipettes, reagent reservoirs, and tube formats for sample storage and transfer. Volume ranges span 0.1 µL to 50 mL across manual single-channel, multichannel, and electronic pipettor formats.

MBP Inc. is a registered vendor at Howard Hughes Medical Institute, Vanderbilt University, and MD Anderson Cancer Center, supplying liquid handling consumables to procurement teams across the USA and Canada with Quick Order, PO, and bulk case pricing. What Are Liquid Handling Products?

Liquid handling products are single-use and reusable consumables that enable accurate, reproducible transfer of liquids across volumes from sub-microliter to 50 mL.  Pipette tips are available in universal fit (compatible with most major pipette brands) and pipette-specific variants (Eppendorf epT.I.P.S., Rainin LTS). Accuracy and reproducibility in liquid handling depend on the geometric match between the tip collar and the pipette shaft, as well as polypropylene surface properties that affect liquid retention and volume delivery. For routine buffer and reagent dispensing, non-filtered universal tips deliver the lowest cost per sample; for nucleic acid or biohazardous work, aerosol-barrier filter tips are required.

What you will find:

  • Pipette Tips – Essential consumables for precise volume delivery and contamination prevention.

  • Bottle Top Dispensers – Safe and rapid reagent dispensing directly from storage bottles.

  • Serological Pipettes – Calibrated tools for accurate milliliter-scale liquid transfers.

  • Aspirating Pipettes – Specialized non-graduated tubes for removing supernatants and waste fluids.

  • Pipettors & Controllers – Ergonomic manual and electronic devices for effortless pipettinpg control.

  • Automation Consumables – High-throughput tips compatible with major robotic liquid handling systems.

  • Transfer Pipettes – Disposable polyethylene tools for simple, shatterproof liquid moving tasks.

  • Filtered Pipette Tips – Aerosol-resistant barriers that protect samples and equipment from vapors.

  • Reagent Reservoirs – Optimized containers that facilitate easy multi-channel pipette access.

How to Choose Liquid Handling Products

Tip Fit: Universal vs Pipette-Specific
Universal fit tips use collar geometry (3.8 mm collar for ≤10 µL, 6.1 mm collar for ≤200 µL) standardised across most pipette brands — including Eppendorf, Gilson, Rainin (non-LTS), Thermo, and Sartorius/BioHit. Pipette-specific tips such as Rainin LTS and Eppendorf epT.I.P.S. provide the tightest seal and best volumetric accuracy for their designated instruments; use them where precision is critical.

Filter vs Non-Filter
Aerosol-barrier filter tips contain a hydrophobic polyethylene or cellulose filter element that prevents aerosol and liquid ingress into the pipette barrel — required for PCR setup, RNA work, and biohazardous sample handling. Non-filter tips are appropriate for routine buffer, media, and reagent transfer where aerosol contamination is not a concern.

Low-Retention Surface
Low-retention (hydrophobic) tips are moulded from polypropylene with reduced surface energy, minimising liquid adhesion on the inner tip wall. They improve accuracy when dispensing small volumes (≤10 µL), viscous liquids, proteins, and organic solvents, where standard tips leave significant residual volumes.

Volume Range
Match the tip to the pipette volume range: 10 µL tips (3.8 mm collar) for 0.1–10 µL pipettes; 200 µL tips (6.1 mm collar) for 20–200 µL pipettes; 1,000 µL tips for 100–1,000 µL pipettes; 1,250 µL extended tips for high-volume P1000 applications; 5 mL and 10 mL macro tips for high-volume pipettors.

Packaging: Racked vs Bulk vs Reload
Racked tips (hinged rack, 96-tip format) are standard for manual pipetting; reload inserts reduce plastic waste by replacing the rack insert rather than the full assembly. Bulk bags lower cost per tip for non-sterile applications; sterile individually racked tips are used in cleanroom or BSL workflows.

Specifications Context

Pipette tips are manufactured from virgin polypropylene; filter elements use polyethylene (PE) or cellulose. ISO 8655 defines pipette volumetric accuracy and calibration standards; tip quality directly affects ISO 8655 compliance. Tips certified DNase-free, RNase-free, ATP-free, human DNA-free, pyrogen-free, and PCR inhibitor-free are the standard for molecular biology applications. The MBP Inc. stocks Sorenson Bioscience universal fit tips, Globe Scientific, and Nest Scientific lines alongside pipette-specific formats for Eppendorf and Rainin instruments.

FAQ

MBP Inc. supplies pipette tips (universal fit, filtered, low-retention, and extended-length), serological pipettes, and liquid handling tube formats for research labs across the USA and Canada. Tip volumes range from 0.1 µL micro tips to 1,250 µL high-volume formats in racked, bulk, and reload packaging.
Universal fit tips use standardised collar geometry (3.8 mm for ≤10 µL; 6.1 mm for ≤200 µL) compatible with most major pipette brands including Eppendorf, Gilson, Rainin non-LTS, and Thermo. Pipette-specific tips such as Rainin LTS and Eppendorf epT.I.P.S. provide the tightest seal and best volumetric accuracy but are limited to their designated instrument.
Filter pipette tips with a hydrophobic polyethylene or cellulose barrier are required for PCR and qPCR setup, RNA extraction and handling, any biohazardous sample work, and applications where aerosol contamination of the pipette barrel would compromise subsequent results or pose a safety risk.
Low-retention tips are moulded from hydrophobic polypropylene with reduced surface energy, minimising liquid adhesion on the inner tip wall. Use them when dispensing small volumes (≤10 µL), viscous liquids such as glycerol-containing enzyme buffers, proteins, and organic solvents where residual volume in standard tips would affect accuracy.
Pipette tips span a full volume range: 10 µL tips (3.8 mm collar) for 0.1–10 µL pipettes; 200 µL tips (6.1 mm collar) for 20–200 µL pipettes; 1,000 µL tips for P1000 pipettes; 1,250 µL extended tips for high-volume applications; and macro tips up to 10 mL for repeat dispenser and large-volume pipettor formats.
Pipette tips for molecular biology should be certified DNase-free, RNase-free, human DNA-free, ATP-free, pyrogen-free, and PCR inhibitor-free per independent lot testing. Virgin polypropylene construction without plasticisers or antistatic agents is the standard that supports these certifications.
ISO 8655 defines performance requirements and test methods for piston-operated volumetric instruments including pipettes. Tip quality directly affects whether a pipette meets its ISO 8655 accuracy and precision specification; a poor tip-pipette seal introduces systematic volume error that can cause the instrument to fail calibration verification.
Reload tip inserts reduce per-tip cost and plastic waste for high-volume labs by replacing only the tip insert into a reusable rack base, rather than discarding the entire rack assembly. Reload formats are available for most major rack sizes (96-tip racks in 10 µL, 200 µL, and 1,000 µL) from Sorenson Bioscience and equivalent suppliers.
