Bottle Top Dispensers for Controlled Reagent Dispensing

Bottle top dispensers are piston-driven liquid dispensing devices that mount directly on reagent supply bottles via standard GL 45 or GL 38 threads, enabling accurate, repeatable single-stroke dispensing of volumes from 0.2 mL to 100 mL of acids, bases, solvents, saline solutions, and buffers without direct contact between the operator and the reagent. Analog (mechanical) and digital volume-setting models are available; chemical-resistant materials (borosilicate glass, PTFE, FEP, PP) accommodate aggressive reagents.

MBP Inc. supplies bottle top dispensers, shipping to research and clinical labs across the USA and Canada with Quick Order and PO purchasing. Contact customerservice@mbpinc.net  to request a quote today!

What Are Bottle Top Dispensers?

A bottle top dispenser is a recirculating piston pump that screws onto a reagent supply bottle and dispenses a preset volume of liquid with each plunger stroke. The piston draws liquid up through an inlet valve from the bottle and delivers a fixed volume through a discharge tube on each downstroke; unused liquid is returned to the bottle via a recirculation valve, minimising waste. They replace repetitive pipetting from large reagent bottles, reducing operator exposure, evaporation of volatile solvents, and the risk of contaminating the bulk stock. Volume ranges span 0.2–100 mL, depending on cylinder size, covering reagent preparation, media dispensing, buffer aliquoting, and acid/base chemistry. Use a bottle top dispenser whenever you dispense the same volume repeatedly from a large bottle — it reduces operator time, contamination risk, and reagent waste versus manual pipetting.

How to Choose a Bottle Top Dispenser

Volume Range: Match Cylinder Size to Application
Dispensers are available in six nominal cylinder sizes: 1 mL, 2 mL, 5 mL, 10 mL, 25 mL, 50 mL, and 100 mL. Choose the cylinder size closest to your target dispensing volume; setting a dispenser to 20% of nominal volume introduces greater inaccuracy than setting it to 50–80% of nominal. The BRAND Dispensette S spans 1–100 mL across six sizes; Eppendorf Varispenser 2 covers 0.2–100 mL.

Analog vs Digital Volume Setting
Analog dispensers use a mechanical, scalloped, or graduated track for volume selection — simple, battery-free, and reliable for routine dispensing. Digital dispensers display the selected volume on an LCD screen, enabling precise sub-mL volume setting and easy documentation for GLP/GMP compliance contexts.

Chemical Compatibility: Material Selection
Standard dispensers use polypropylene (PP) valve bodies — suitable for aqueous buffers, saline, most bases, and many organic solvents. For aggressive acids (HCl, HNO₃, HF) and halogenated solvents, select dispensers with glass cylinders and PTFE or FEP wetted parts. Dispensette S Organic (BRAND) uses a PTFE-coated cylinder and FEP discharge tube for aggressive solvents and acids; Dispensette S Trace Analysis uses borosilicate glass for high-purity acid dispensing.

GL 45 Thread Compatibility
Most dispensers mount on GL 45-threaded bottles (the standard for Schott Duran, BRAND, and Nalgene reagent bottles). Thread adapters (GL 24–GL 45) are typically included for compatibility with smaller bottle sizes.

Recirculation Valve
A recirculation valve returns excess liquid to the supply bottle without re-aspiration, maintaining dispenser prime and reducing waste — standard on most modern dispensers and required when dispensing volatile reagents.

Specifications Context

Volume accuracy of a well-maintained bottle top dispenser is typically ±1% of nominal volume at 20°C with distilled water (BRAND Dispensette S specification). ISO 8655 Part 5 defines performance standards for piston-operated burettes; bottle top dispensers that conform to this standard carry a performance certificate. GL 45 thread (DIN EN ISO 4161) is the global standard for reagent bottle neck finish. BRAND Dispensette S and Eppendorf Varispenser 2 remain the dominant bottle top dispenser formats in North American research labs.

FAQ

A bottle top dispenser mounts on a reagent supply bottle and dispenses a pre-set volume of liquid (0.2–100 mL) per plunger stroke. It is used for repetitive dispensing of buffers, media, acids, bases, saline solutions, and solvents from large stock bottles, reducing operator exposure, minimising evaporation of volatile reagents, and preventing contamination of the bulk stock.
Bottle top dispensers are available in nominal cylinder sizes of 1, 2, 5, 10, 25, 50, and 100 mL, covering a dispensing range of 0.2 mL to 100 mL depending on the model. The BRAND Dispensette S spans 1–100 mL across six cylinder sizes; the Eppendorf Varispenser 2 covers 0.2–100 mL.
Select the cylinder size closest to your target dispensing volume. Accuracy is best when setting the dispenser to 50–80% of nominal cylinder volume; at 20% of nominal or below, inaccuracy increases. For example, for a 5 mL dispense, choose a 5 mL or 10 mL cylinder rather than a 25 mL cylinder.
Analog dispensers use a mechanical graduated track for volume selection — battery-free and simple for routine dispensing. Digital dispensers display the selected volume on an LCD screen, enabling sub-mL precision setting and providing documented volume readout for GLP or GMP compliance workflows.
Most bottle top dispensers mount on GL 45-threaded bottles, the standard thread for Schott Duran, BRAND, and Nalgene wide-neck reagent bottles. Thread adapters (GL 24 through GL 40) are typically included to accommodate smaller bottle neck sizes. Confirm the bottle thread before ordering the dispenser.
For organic solvents and aggressive acids such as HCl and HNO₃, use dispensers with PTFE and FEP wetted parts — such as the BRAND Dispensette S Organic. For high-purity acid dispensing for trace analysis (H₂SO₄, H₂O₂), use the Dispensette S Trace Analysis with borosilicate glass cylinder and PTFE fittings.
A well-maintained bottle top dispenser compliant with ISO 8655 Part 5 achieves ±1% of nominal volume accuracy with distilled water at 20°C. Performance certificates are issued with dispensers that have been factory-tested. Recalibrate dispensers periodically, as stated in your lab's QC schedule.
A recirculation valve channels excess liquid back to the supply bottle rather than discharging it, maintaining the dispenser in a primed state and preventing waste of reagent. It is required when dispensing volatile solvents that would evaporate during priming if the valve were absent.
ISO 8655 Part 5 defines performance requirements and test methods for piston-operated burettes, including bottle top dispensers. Dispensers carrying a performance certificate have been tested against this standard. The GL 45 bottle neck thread is standardised under DIN EN ISO 4161.
