What Are Laboratory Storage Bottles?

Laboratory storage bottles are precision-molded plastic vessels used to store, transport, and dispense liquid and solid reagents, solvents, buffers, and samples across a wide range of laboratory workflows. Globe Scientific's Diamond RealSeal bottle range includes wash mouth bottles, wide mouth bottles, and narrow mouth bottles. Wash mouth bottles are flexible LDPE squeeze bottles available in 250–1000 mL sizes for glassware rinsing and solvent dispensing. Wide mouth bottles, available in HDPE and PP from 30 mL to 2 L, are designed for powders, viscous liquids, and bulk sample storage. Narrow mouth bottles, including Boston round styles in HDPE, LDPE, and PP, range from 4 mL to 8 L and are used for liquid reagents, sampling, and chemical storage. All Diamond RealSeal bottles are manufactured from virgin FDA 21 CFR-compliant resins and feature PP integral-seal closures that provide leak-proof performance without separate liners or gaskets. LDPE is best suited for squeeze-action wash bottles, HDPE is the standard choice for general liquid storage, and PP should be selected whenever autoclave sterilization is required.

What you will find:

How to Choose Laboratory Storage Bottles

Mouth Size: Wash, Wide, or Narrow

Wash mouth bottles feature integrated dispensing nozzles or draw tubes that allow controlled squeeze-action delivery and are primarily used for rinsing and dispensing liquids rather than long-term storage. Wide mouth bottles, with openings typically greater than 38 mm, allow easy filling and dispensing of powders, granules, viscous liquids, and larger samples. Narrow mouth bottles, including Boston round designs, provide controlled pouring, reduced evaporation, and secure storage for liquid reagents and solvents.

Material Match

LDPE is the preferred material for wash bottles because of its flexibility and squeeze performance. HDPE provides broad chemical resistance, low leachables, and a temperature range suitable for most laboratory chemicals and reagents, making it the standard choice for general storage. PP is selected when bottles must withstand autoclave sterilization at 121°C or be used for media preparation and sterile workflows. Amber HDPE and amber PP bottles are recommended for light-sensitive compounds that require protection from UV and visible light exposure.

Volume

Small bottles ranging from 4–30 mL are commonly used for reference standards, analytical reagents, and sample collection. Mid-range bottles from 60–500 mL are suitable for daily-use reagents, calibration standards, and working solutions. Larger bottles from 1–8 L are typically used for bulk reagent storage, media preparation, and buffer stock solutions.

Closure Type

Diamond RealSeal PP closures incorporate an integral seal ring that creates a leak-proof closure without requiring separate liners or gaskets. Standard PP screw caps are used throughout the Diamond Essentials economy line. For autoclavable PP bottles, caps should be loosened during sterilization and tightened after cooling to maintain proper sealing performance.

FAQ

MBP carries Globe Scientific's Diamond RealSeal laboratory bottle range across three sub-categories: wash mouth bottles (LDPE squeeze bottles, 250–1000 mL, with color-coded caps for reagent identification), wide mouth bottles (HDPE and PP round and square formats, 30 mL–2 L, for powders and viscous samples), and narrow mouth bottles (HDPE, LDPE, and PP Boston round formats, 4 mL–8 L, for liquid reagents, sampling, and light-sensitive chemical storage in amber versions). All bottles are precision-molded from virgin resins.
Laboratory storage bottles are available in HDPE, LDPE, PP, PETG, and borosilicate glass. HDPE is the standard for general-purpose aqueous reagent storage—chemically resistant, rated to −100°C, and low-leachable. LDPE is the correct choice for squeeze-action wash bottles due to its flexibility. PP is autoclavable at 121°C and preferred when sterilization is required. Amber HDPE and amber PP bottles block UV transmission for light-sensitive compounds. Globe Scientific Diamond RealSeal bottles are molded from virgin resins conforming to FDA 21 CFR standards.
Wide mouth bottles have a broad neck opening (typically 38–63 mm) that allows easy filling with powders, viscous liquids, and samples using scoops, spatulas, or large-bore dispensers—and equally easy cleaning. Narrow mouth (Boston round) bottles have a narrower neck (typically 18–38 mm) that provides better pouring control for liquids, reduces evaporation and vapor loss, and limits surface exposure for volatile compounds. Choose wide mouth for solids, viscous samples, and high-access applications; narrow mouth for aqueous reagents, volatile chemicals, and sampling workflows.
Globe Scientific Diamond RealSeal PP laboratory bottles are autoclavable at 121°C for 20 minutes with the cap loosened. HDPE and LDPE Diamond RealSeal bottles are not rated for autoclave sterilization—both materials may soften or deform at sustained 121°C steam temperatures. For sterilizable bottle applications, specify PP format. All Diamond RealSeal bottles are precision-molded from virgin FDA 21 CFR-compliant resins with integral-seal polypropylene closures for a leak-proof fit.
Amber laboratory bottles—available in amber HDPE and amber PP—are used to store light-sensitive compounds that degrade on exposure to UV or visible light. Common applications include storage of photosensitive chemicals (iodine solutions, silver nitrate, bilirubin standards), fluorescent dyes, certain vitamins, and pharmaceutical intermediates. Globe Scientific offers amber HDPE narrow-mouth Boston rounds (15 mL–1000 mL) and amber HDPE wide-mouth bottles. The amber coloring provides UV protection without requiring foil wrapping or a light-proof cabinet for routine bench storage.
Globe Scientific's Diamond RealSeal closure is a polypropylene screw cap engineered with an integral elastomeric seal ring that compresses against the bottle neck rim on full engagement, providing a leak-proof seal without a separate gasket, liner, or insert. This eliminates the risk of gasket displacement or loss that can compromise the seal on multi-component closures. The Diamond RealSeal design is used across Globe Scientific's wash bottles, wide-mouth bottles, narrow-mouth bottles, jerricans, and carboys for consistent leak-free performance.
MBP stocks Globe Scientific Diamond RealSeal wash bottles, wide-mouth bottles, and narrow-mouth bottles in case quantities (packs of 6–72 per case depending on bottle size). Globe Scientific is ISO 9001:2015 certified. MBP ships to research, pharmaceutical, and clinical labs across the US, Canada, and internationally, and is a registered vendor for Howard Hughes Medical Institute, Vanderbilt University, and MD Anderson Cancer Center.
Globe Scientific Diamond RealSeal HDPE laboratory bottles are rated from −100°C to +120°C, covering −80°C ultra-low temperature freezer storage through hot-fill operations. This range makes HDPE bottles suitable for reagent aliquots stored in −20°C and −80°C freezers. For autoclave sterilization at 121°C, use PP bottles—HDPE bottles are not rated for sustained autoclave steam conditions. LDPE wash bottles are rated for general laboratory temperatures (approximately −20°C to +80°C) only.
