Erlenmeyer Flasks

What Are Glass Erlenmeyer Flasks?

Glass Erlenmeyer flasks (conical flasks) are wide-base, tapered-neck borosilicate glass vessels designed for swirling liquids without spillage, growing microbial cultures, performing titrations, and conducting vacuum filtration. The conical shape concentrates swirled liquid toward the base, keeping it away from the narrow neck during vigorous mixing — preventing splashing that would occur in a straight-sided beaker. Globe Scientific borosilicate Erlenmeyer flasks at MBP are manufactured to ISO 9001:2015 standards, are autoclavable at 121°C, and are chemically resistant to the full range of laboratory reagents. Choose narrow-mouth for most bench workflows; wide-mouth for solid addition; screw-cap for sealed culture or transport; filter flasks for vacuum filtration.

How to Choose Erlenmeyer Flasks

Narrow Mouth vs. Wide Mouth Narrow-mouth Erlenmeyer flasks are the standard format — the restricted opening reduces evaporation during prolonged incubations, accepts foam stoppers, cotton plugs, and standard rubber bungs, and provides a pouring lip for controlled transfers. Wide-mouth flasks are used when solid materials (agar powder, media granules, solid substrates) need to be added through the neck — the wider opening prevents solid-to-neck contact and residue loss. Heavy Duty Heavy-duty Erlenmeyer flasks have reinforced rims and thicker walls — suited to labs with high breakage rates, high-throughput autoclaving, or handling of large-volume flasks where the weight of flask plus contents stresses the neck during handling and transport. Screw Cap vs. Foam/Bung Closure Screw-cap Erlenmeyer flasks with polypropylene caps allow sealed incubation, safe transport of sterile media, and controlled-atmosphere storage. Standard flasks with foam or cotton closures allow gas exchange — appropriate for aerobic microbial culture. For transport or anaerobic conditions, a screw-cap is the correct choice. Filter Flask (Side Arm) Filter flasks have a tubular side arm on the neck used to connect a vacuum line during vacuum filtration. A Buchner or Hirsch funnel seated in the neck draws liquid through a filter medium into the flask body under vacuum. Use filter flasks for rapid filtration of biological suspensions, precipitate collection, and membrane filtrations.

Specifications Context

Globe Scientific borosilicate glass Erlenmeyer flasks are manufactured under ISO 9001:2015 quality standards from borosilicate glass conforming to ASTM E438 Type I (USP Type I). Autoclave tolerance: 121°C for standard sterilisation cycles; do not autoclave fully sealed screw-cap flasks — loosen one quarter-turn to allow steam pressure equalisation. Common volumes: 25mL to 5,000mL (standard); filter flasks typically 125mL to 4,000mL. As of June 2026, MBP stocks all five Erlenmeyer flask formats from Globe Scientific.

Griffin Style Beaker

What Are Griffin Style Beakers?

Griffin style beakers are low-form cylindrical vessels with a height-to-diameter ratio of approximately 1.0:1.4 — shorter and wider than tall-form (Berzelius) beakers — designed for stable stirring on a magnetic stir plate, heating on a hot plate, and general reagent handling on the bench. The flat base provides maximum contact with hot-plate surfaces for uniform heating; the wide opening allows easy reagent addition, thermometer insertion, and stirring access. Borosilicate glass Griffin beakers at MBP conform to ASTM E960. Griffin style is the default beaker for most bench workflows; choose tall-form (Berzelius) only when a tall liquid column is required for distillation or titration setups.

Size Selection
MBP stocks Griffin style beakers from 10 mL to 5,000 mL. Common bench sizes include 50 mL and 100 mL for small-scale reactions and staining, 250 mL for routine buffer work, 1,000 mL for media or reagent preparation, and 2,000 mL for larger-volume batches. As a general guideline, beakers should be filled to no more than two-thirds of their nominal capacity when heating to allow for liquid expansion and prevent boil-over.
Graduation: Molded vs. Printed
Molded graduations are permanently embossed into the glass and are resistant to solvents, autoclaving, and repeated cleaning cycles. Printed dual-scale graduations provide higher contrast for quick bench reading but may fade over time with repeated autoclaving or exposure to aggressive solvents.
Borosilicate Glass
Griffin style beakers at MBP are made from borosilicate glass, which is resistant to acids, bases, alcohols, and most organic solvents, and is autoclavable at 121°C. Its low thermal expansion coefficient (~3.3×10⁻⁶/K) helps prevent cracking during rapid heating or cooling.
Case Pack Availability
High-volume laboratories can order Griffin style beakers in case packs to reduce per-unit cost. Case pricing varies by size and is available upon request from MBP.

Specifications Context

Griffin style (low form) glass beakers conform to ASTM E960 with graduation accuracy of ±5% of total capacity. The low height-to-diameter ratio provides greater stability than tall-form beakers on stirrers and hot plates. Borosilicate glass is inert to HCl, H₂SO₄, HNO₃, CH₃COOH, NaOH, acetone, ethanol, methanol, and xylene. Hydrofluoric acid (HF) must not be used with glass as it dissolves silica-based materials. These beakers are suitable for autoclaving at 121°C (wet cycle) and dry-heat sterilisation up to 500°C.

Glass Media Bottle

What Are Glass Media Bottles?

Glass media bottles are borosilicate screw-cap storage vessels designed for preparing, autoclaving, and dispensing laboratory culture media, biological buffers, and liquid reagents. Unlike Erlenmeyer flasks with foam closures, media bottles have threaded screw caps providing a leak-proof seal for transport, dispensing, and long-term storage. Globe Scientific glass media bottles at MBP are manufactured from borosilicate glass (ASTM E438 Type I / USP Type I), supplied with polypropylene (PP) screw caps, and are autoclavable at 121°C. Choose clear borosilicate for most reagents; choose amber glass for light-sensitive compounds such as photodegradable stains, bilirubin standards, certain vitamin solutions, and riboflavin.

How to Choose Glass Media Bottles

Clear vs. Amber Glass Clear borosilicate media bottles are appropriate for reagents that are not UV- or visible-light-sensitive. Amber glass bottles filter light below approximately 450nm, protecting light-degradable contents from photodegradation. Common applications for amber storage include: ethidium bromide solutions, crystal violet stain, bilirubin calibrators, vitamin B2 (riboflavin) solutions, and other photosensitive reagents. Choose amber glass when the reagent specification or manufacturer's instructions recommend light protection. Wide-Mouth vs. Standard Neck Standard-neck media bottles are suited for liquid-to-liquid transfers and dispensing. Wide-mouth media bottles allow easier filling with solid powder media (agar, broth powder, salt), scooping viscous materials, and thorough cleaning — preferred for culture media preparation where media powder is dissolved directly in the bottle. Graduated vs. Non-Graduated Graduated media bottles have approximate volume markings for guidance during media preparation without a separate measuring cylinder. Markings are typically ±5% and are not certified for precision volumetric work. Cap and Pouring Ring PP screw caps are autoclavable at 121°C. Loosen caps one quarter-turn before autoclaving to allow steam pressure equalisation. Some formats include a pouring ring insert on the neck interior that prevents liquid from running down the outside of the bottle when dispensing.

Specifications Context

Globe Scientific glass media bottles are manufactured from borosilicate glass conforming to ASTM E438 Type I and USP Type I, providing chemical resistance to acids, bases, alcohols, and most organic solvents. PP screw caps are autoclavable at 121°C; verify PP compatibility with any strong oxidising acid or halogenated solvent before use. Amber glass attenuates light below ~450nm, protecting photosensitive contents during storage. MBP stocks clear and amber glass media bottles from Globe Scientific for labs in the US, Canada, and worldwide.

Serological Pipettes

What Are Serological Pipettes?

Serological pipettes are calibrated, graduated, sterile polystyrene disposable pipettes used with a motorised pipette controller to transfer measured volumes of liquid in the 1–100 mL range. They are the primary tool for cell culture media transfer, buffer preparation, reagent dispensing in volumes above 1 mL, and serial dilutions requiring volumetric accuracy in the millilitre range. They differ from aspirating pipettes — which have no graduations and are used only for vacuum-assisted waste removal — and from microcentrifuge tubes, which are not dispensing instruments. Serological pipettes are the correct format for any measured liquid transfer ≥1 mL in cell culture or reagent preparation; pair them with a motorised pipette controller for safe, ergonomic operation.

How to Choose Serological Pipettes

Volume: Standard Sizes and ISO 7550 Colour Coding ISO 7550 assigns a specific colour code to each serological pipette volume: 1 mL = red; 2 mL = yellow; 5 mL = blue; 10 mL = orange; 25 mL = green; 50 mL = purple (pink/violet depending on supplier). Colour coding allows quick visual volume identification when multiple sizes are in use simultaneously in a BSC. Packaging: Individual Wrap vs Bulk Individually wrapped sterile pipettes are required for cell culture, molecular biology, and aseptic technique. Plastic/plastic peel-open packaging eliminates paper particulate from paper/plastic wrappers — important in sensitive cell culture applications and for RNA work. Bulk-packed (canister or bag) formats are cost-effective for non-sterile applications such as buffer preparation and reagent dispensing in fume hoods. Construction: 1-Piece vs 3-Piece 1 mL, 2 mL, and 5 mL serological pipettes are typically one-piece moulded polystyrene constructions. 10 mL, 25 mL, and 50 mL pipettes use 3-piece ultrasonically welded construction (Globe Scientific) for the body-to-cone and body-to-cap joints — essential for the structural integrity of larger formats under aspiration vacuum. Tip and Graduation Features Negative graduations (markings above the nominal maximum) allow volumes slightly above nominal to be read. Fine-point tips with slow drip-off improve pipetting accuracy during cell culture media transfers. Some brands offer Wobble-not-style pipettes with reduced barrel flex for easier single-hand operation. Filter Plug Material Cotton filter plugs are standard; synthetic plugs (polyethylene or polypropylene) are preferred when processing organic solvents or any media that might wick through a cotton plug.

Serological pipettes are manufactured from optically clear virgin polystyrene in Class 100,000 cleanroom conditions. Sterility: individually wrapped pipettes are EO-sterilised to SAL 10⁻⁶; non-pyrogenic, non-cytotoxic, DNase-free, and RNase-free per lot. ISO 7550 defines colour coding for serological pipettes; many US suppliers follow this standard, though it is not universally mandated. Calibrated to deliver (TD) with blow-out (marked with a double band or 'TD' marking) — all liquid must be expelled from the tip for accurate delivery. Globe Scientific, Nest Scientific, and Falcon remain the dominant serological pipette brands in North American cell culture labs.

Volumetric Flasks

What Are Volumetric Flasks?

Volumetric flasks are precision-calibrated glass vessels with a flat-bottomed pear-shaped body, a long, narrow neck, and a single etched or ceramic-printed calibration mark at the neck. They hold a precisely defined volume of liquid at a specified temperature (20°C) — used to prepare standard solutions of exactly known molarity or concentration, dilute samples to a defined final volume for analytical work, and make reference standards in analytical chemistry and quality control. Globe Scientific volumetric flasks at MBP are manufactured from borosilicate glass conforming to ASTM E288 and ISO 1042, with Class A (tightest tolerance) and Class B (2× Class A tolerance) options. Choose Class A volumetric flasks for analytical chemistry, standard solution preparation, and regulated QC work; choose Class B for routine dilutions and non-critical volumetric preparation.

How to Choose Volumetric Flasks

Class A vs. Class B Class A volumetric flasks conform to ASTM E288 / ISO 1042 Class A tolerances — e.g., ±0.10mL on a 100mL flask, ±0.30mL on a 500mL flask, ±0.40mL on a 1,000mL flask. Class B flasks have tolerances exactly twice as wide as Class A. Class A flasks may include individual calibration certificates (traceable to NIST) and batch Certificates of Conformance for regulated laboratory environments. Wide-Mouth vs. Standard Standard volumetric flasks have a narrow neck opening suited for liquid-to-liquid dilution. Wide-mouth volumetric flasks have a larger neck opening designed for dissolving solid solutes — pellets, powders, and slow-dissolving materials — where a narrow neck would cause solid-to-wall contact and residue loss during transfer. Size and Fill Procedure Common analytical sizes: 25mL, 50mL, 100mL, 250mL, 500mL, 1,000mL. Correct fill technique: dissolve solute in a small volume of solvent first in a separate beaker, cool to 20°C, transfer quantitatively to the flask, then add solvent gradually to within a few mL of the mark, mix, then make up to the mark dropwise. Stoppers: Glass vs. Polyethylene Glass ground-glass stoppers are chemically inert for most reagents. Polyethylene (PE) caps are recommended for strong base solutions (NaOH) or HF — reagents that can etch glass or cause stoppers to seize in the neck.

Specifications Context

Globe Scientific volumetric flasks are manufactured from borosilicate glass 3.3 conforming to ASTM E288 and ISO 1042. Calibrations are specified at 20°C — temperature deviations shift the enclosed volume due to glass and liquid thermal expansion. Volumetric flasks should not be used as heating vessels; heat causes volume drift from the calibrated mark. Class A tolerance for a 250mL flask is ±0.15mL; for a 1,000mL flask, ±0.40mL. MBP stocks Class A, Class B, and wide-mouth formats from Globe Scientific for labs worldwide.
