Volumetric Flasks

What Are Volumetric Flasks?

Volumetric flasks are precision-calibrated glass vessels with a flat-bottomed pear-shaped body, a long, narrow neck, and a single etched or ceramic-printed calibration mark at the neck. They hold a precisely defined volume of liquid at a specified temperature (20°C) — used to prepare standard solutions of exactly known molarity or concentration, dilute samples to a defined final volume for analytical work, and make reference standards in analytical chemistry and quality control. Globe Scientific volumetric flasks at MBP are manufactured from borosilicate glass conforming to ASTM E288 and ISO 1042, with Class A (tightest tolerance) and Class B (2× Class A tolerance) options. Choose Class A volumetric flasks for analytical chemistry, standard solution preparation, and regulated QC work; choose Class B for routine dilutions and non-critical volumetric preparation.

How to Choose Volumetric Flasks

Class A vs. Class B Class A volumetric flasks conform to ASTM E288 / ISO 1042 Class A tolerances — e.g., ±0.10mL on a 100mL flask, ±0.30mL on a 500mL flask, ±0.40mL on a 1,000mL flask. Class B flasks have tolerances exactly twice as wide as Class A. Class A flasks may include individual calibration certificates (traceable to NIST) and batch Certificates of Conformance for regulated laboratory environments. Wide-Mouth vs. Standard Standard volumetric flasks have a narrow neck opening suited for liquid-to-liquid dilution. Wide-mouth volumetric flasks have a larger neck opening designed for dissolving solid solutes — pellets, powders, and slow-dissolving materials — where a narrow neck would cause solid-to-wall contact and residue loss during transfer. Size and Fill Procedure Common analytical sizes: 25mL, 50mL, 100mL, 250mL, 500mL, 1,000mL. Correct fill technique: dissolve solute in a small volume of solvent first in a separate beaker, cool to 20°C, transfer quantitatively to the flask, then add solvent gradually to within a few mL of the mark, mix, then make up to the mark dropwise. Stoppers: Glass vs. Polyethylene Glass ground-glass stoppers are chemically inert for most reagents. Polyethylene (PE) caps are recommended for strong base solutions (NaOH) or HF — reagents that can etch glass or cause stoppers to seize in the neck.

Specifications Context

Globe Scientific volumetric flasks are manufactured from borosilicate glass 3.3 conforming to ASTM E288 and ISO 1042. Calibrations are specified at 20°C — temperature deviations shift the enclosed volume due to glass and liquid thermal expansion. Volumetric flasks should not be used as heating vessels; heat causes volume drift from the calibrated mark. Class A tolerance for a 250mL flask is ±0.15mL; for a 1,000mL flask, ±0.40mL. MBP stocks Class A, Class B, and wide-mouth formats from Globe Scientific for labs worldwide.

Cluster Tubes

What are Cluster Tubes?

Cluster tubes are 1.2 mL polypropylene tubes arranged in either a 96-well individual format (96 tubes in a standard 96-well microplate-footprint rack) or an 8-strip format (8 tubes connected in a strip sized to fit one column of a 96-well block), used for multi-sample storage, screening, dilution series preparation, compound dispensing, and PCR-adjacent molecular biology workflows. Unlike 0.2 mL PCR strip tubes optimized for thin-wall thermal cycling, cluster tubes have a 1.2 mL per-tube volume, making them suited for master mix preparation, sample banking, cherry-picking for automation, and high-throughput assay staging where larger volumes per well are required. Polyethylene 8-cap strips close the tubes securely. Choose individual-format 96-well cluster tubes for sample banking and automated cherry-picking workflows; choose 8-strip cluster tubes for manual multi-sample preparation steps that mirror the 96-well column format.

How to Choose Cluster Tubes

Individual Tube vs. 8-Strip Format Individual 96-well cluster tube formats place 96 separate 1.2 mL PP tubes in a standard 96-well SBS-footprint rack with lid. Each tube can be individually removed, labeled, and stored — ideal for sample banking, cherry-picking, and hit-to-lead compound storage. The 8-strip format presents 8 connected 1.2 mL tubes in a strip that sits in one column of the same 96-well rack; strips cannot be separated into individual tubes for most formats. Sterile vs. Non-Sterile Sterile cluster tubes (gamma or E-beam sterilized, DNase/RNase-free certified) are required for cell-based assays, viral plaque assays, and any workflow where contamination invalidates the result. Non-sterile tubes are adequate for compound storage, buffer preparation, dilution series, and non-biological applications. Confirm whether your downstream assay requires sterile tubes before ordering bulk non-sterile stock. With or Without Rack and Lid Cluster tubes are available as tubes-only (bulk, no rack), with a 96-well polypropylene rack (with lid), or as pre-assembled rack-and-tube sets. For workflows using an automation liquid handler (Tecan, Hamilton, Beckman Coulter Biomek), the pre-racked format with SBS-footprint dimensions (127.76 × 85.48 mm) is required for instrument compatibility. Confirm your automation platform's deck footprint specification before ordering tubes-only formats. Cap Strip Compatibility Polyethylene 8-cap strips fit 1.2 mL cluster tubes and cluster tube strips, providing individual tube sealing. Caps must be purchased separately for most non-racked formats. For automated workflows requiring positive tube identification, 2D-barcoded tube options are available from specialty suppliers. Volume Considerations The 1.2 mL per tube is the standard cluster tube volume. The maximum working volume is approximately 1.0 mL. For applications requiring >1 mL per well (deep-well culture, high-volume extraction), deep-well plates (2.0 mL per well, 96-well SBS format) are the appropriate format rather than cluster tubes.

Specifications Context

96-well cluster tubes are manufactured from polypropylene (PP) in standard 96-well SBS footprint (127.76 × 85.48 mm) racks with secure-fit polypropylene lids. Individual tube O.D. is designed to conform to standard 96-well position spacing (9 mm center-to-center), ensuring compatibility with 8-channel and 12-channel multi-channel pipettes. PP is chemically resistant to DMSO (commonly used in compound storage at up to 100%), ethanol, isopropanol, and most aqueous buffers. Cluster tubes are autoclavable at 121 °C for reuse in sterile applications when new sterile tubes are not required. 96-well cluster tube system remains the dominant format for compound storage and sample banking in drug discovery and high-throughput screening (HTS) laboratories.

Vortex Mixers

What are laboratory vortex mixers?

A laboratory vortex mixer is a small benchtop instrument with an eccentrically rotating motor that drives a cup-shaped rubber head in a rapid circular path, creating a vortex in liquid-filled tubes or vessels pressed onto the cup. The vibration transfers through the closed tube wall to the liquid, generating a powerful swirling vortex that thoroughly mixes tube contents within seconds. Vortex mixers are used throughout the laboratory for resuspending pellets after centrifugation, mixing enzyme reaction components, homogenizing samples, dissolving compounds, and briefly but thoroughly mixing any small tube or vessel.

How to choose a vortex mixer

Choose touch-mode for ad hoc brief mixing and continuous-mode for timed runs
Touch-mode vortex mixers run only when a tube or vessel is pressed against the cup head, stopping immediately on release — the natural format for brief, on-demand mixing during pipetting workflows. Continuous-mode switches the mixer to run at a set speed without tube contact, suitable for timed mixing steps or when using a multi-tube adapter for batch runs.
Match vortex speed range to your application
Standard vortex mixers operate between approximately 600 and 3200 rpm, with lower speeds appropriate for gentle mixing of delicate samples or larger vessels, and full speed appropriate for vigorous resuspension of tightly packed pellets. Variable-speed models with a dial allow speed to be dialed down for sensitive applications.
Confirm tube compatibility with the cup head or adapter
The standard cup head on most vortex mixers accommodates 1.5 mL and 2 mL microcentrifuge tubes directly, and most standard tube formats up to approximately 50 mL can be mixed by holding the tube against the cup at the appropriate angle. For 15 mL and 50 mL conical tubes, holding at a slight angle rather than vertical provides more efficient mixing.
Consider a multi-tube foam insert for batch processing
Foam inserts and multi-tube adapters allow 6, 8, or more tubes to be mixed simultaneously during a timed continuous-mode run, suited for batch mixing of many samples between processing steps.
Check that footprint and noise level suit your bench placement
Vortex mixers vary considerably in physical footprint and operating noise; models with a suction-cup base or weighted housing reduce walking on the benchtop at high speed. For open-plan labs or shared spaces, noise level at full speed is worth checking in product specifications.

Specifications context

The classic vortex mixing action produces a liquid vortex through eccentrically driven cup oscillation at typically 2000–3200 rpm for full-speed operation, a mechanism that has remained essentially unchanged since the Vortex-Genie design introduced by Scientific Industries in 1962. As of 2026, variable-speed vortex mixers with touch-mode and continuous-mode operation and a removable cup head for accessory attachment remain the most widely used format in molecular biology and biochemistry labs.

Aspirating Pipettes

What Are Aspirating Pipettes?

Aspirating pipettes are single-use polystyrene or polypropylene pipettes supplied without graduation marks or filter plugs, intended for vacuum-assisted removal of spent media, wash buffers, and supernatants from tissue culture vessels and plates. Their key distinction from serological pipettes is the absence of calibrated graduation marks — they are not used to measure volumes but to remove liquid efficiently and without contamination risk. They are used in conjunction with vacuum aspiration systems (benchtop vacuum pumps, Accuris ASPIRE) or handheld aspirators in cell culture workflows. Polystyrene construction is transparent for visual confirmation of aspiration; polypropylene Plasteur-type pipettes offer greater chemical resistance for non-standard reagents. Use aspirating pipettes for media removal; they are cheaper per unit, require no volume reading, and are optimised for rapid vacuum removal.

How to Choose Aspirating Pipettes

Diameter: 1 mL vs 2 mL vs Pasteur-equivalent 1 mL and 2 mL aspirating pipettes have narrow-bore tips suitable for aspirating from 96-well plates, 24-well plates, and culture dishes without disturbing cell monolayers. Larger-bore aspirating pipettes (equivalent to 10–25 mL serological body diameter) are used for rapid media removal from T-flasks and roller bottles. Pasteur-equivalent plastic aspirating pipettes replace glass Pasteur pipettes for routine vacuum aspiration without breakage risk. Individual Wrapping vs Bulk Packaging Individually wrapped aspirating pipettes maintain sterility per unit and are required for cleanroom and BSC work where contamination of unused pipettes would be unacceptable. Bulk-packed formats (100–200 per bag) reduce per-pipette cost for high-volume media removal workflows where the BSC environment maintains sterility adequately. Plastic/Plastic Wrap vs Paper/Plastic Wrap Plastic/plastic individually wrapped pipettes eliminate particulate generation from paper wrapping — recommended for workflows where paper fibres could contaminate sensitive cultures or downstream applications such as RNA extraction. Compatibility with Aspiration Systems Confirm the aspirating pipette outside diameter matches the vacuum aspiration system's cone adapter. Systems such as the Rainin QuickFlow, Integra VACUSAFE, and BrandTech BVC accept standard serological and aspirating pipette diameters; the Accuris ASPIRE uses 200–300 µL pipette tip adapters for small-volume aspiration and Pasteur pipette adapters for larger volumes. Purity Certification Aspirating pipettes for cell culture and RNA work should be certified sterile, DNase-free, RNase-free, non-pyrogenic, and non-cytotoxic. These pipettes provide sterility assurance level, endotoxin-free assurance, non-cytotoxicity assurance, and RNase/DNase-free assurance with every case.

Specifications Context

Aspirating pipettes are manufactured from optically clear virgin polystyrene (standard) or polypropylene (Plasteur-type) in Class 100,000 cleanroom conditions. Sterility: individually wrapped pipettes are EO-sterilised to SAL 10⁻⁶. Purity certifications per lot: sterility, non-pyrogenic, non-cytotoxic, DNase-free, RNase-free. Globe Scientific and Nest Scientific are the leading reference brands in this category.

2D Rockers

What are 2D rockers?

2D rocking platforms produce a simple, rhythmic back-and-forth tilting motion on a single axis, causing liquid to flow alternately from one end of the platform to the other with each tilt cycle. The simplicity of this motion is its strength: a consistent linear sweep of liquid across the platform surface ensures even exposure of the membrane or gel to the incubation solution on every cycle, with no rotational bias that could cause uneven staining or antibody distribution. 2D rockers are the universal standard for western blotting workflows and gel processing because their motion is gentle, predictable, and highly effective at sweeping liquid uniformly across flat surfaces.

How to choose a 2D rocker

Confirm the speed range covers your applications
2D rockers typically operate from 5 to 40 rpm, with most blotting applications running at 10–25 rpm. Some rockers are fixed-speed at a single rpm; variable-speed models provide flexibility to use slower speeds for gentle antibody incubation and faster speeds for wash steps. Confirm that the rocker's speed range accommodates all your planned protocols.
Select a platform size that fits your largest container
Platform size determines the maximum container dimensions: a 25 × 30 cm platform accommodates most standard blot boxes and gel staining dishes for common gel formats. For larger gel formats or when running multiple smaller containers simultaneously, a larger platform of 30 × 40 cm or more provides the necessary space.
Check the tilt angle adjustment if the rocker offers it
Some 2D rockers allow adjustment of the tilt angle as well as speed, which affects the aggressiveness of the liquid sweep. A larger tilt angle at the same speed produces a stronger sweep but may cause liquid to slosh more vigorously, risking splashing and membrane disturbance at higher angles. For standard antibody incubation, a moderate tilt angle of 10–20° is typical.
Consider timer and programmable functions for unattended incubations
Some 2D rockers include a built-in timer that switches the rocker off after a set incubation time, preventing over-incubation when the user cannot monitor the step in real time. This is useful for overnight antibody incubations set to run at low speed inside a cold room or refrigerator.
Verify suitability for cold room or incubator use if needed
For overnight antibody incubations at 4°C or hybridization at 37°C or 65°C, a rocker rated for the relevant temperature environment and humidity is required. Standard bench rockers are not always rated for cold room humidity or elevated incubator temperature.

Specifications context

The 2D rocking platform's single-axis tilt produces a consistent, repeatable sweep pattern that has been validated in western blotting protocols across decades of use, making it the most protocol-tested agitation format in molecular biology. As of 2026, variable-speed 2D rockers with a digital display and built-in timer remain the standard configuration in most molecular biology labs where western blotting is performed routinely.

PCR Plates

What Are PCR Plates?

PCR plates are single-use, thin-wall polypropylene multi-well vessels designed for the thermal cycling demands of PCR, qPCR, RT-PCR, and genotyping. The 96-well format (12 columns × 8 rows) is the standard for most research and clinical labs; 384-well plates serve ultra-high-throughput applications. Well volumes are 0.2 mL (standard profile) for conventional block cyclers or 0.1 mL (low profile) for fast-block instruments. The skirt — the rigid plastic border surrounding the well array — determines automation compatibility, cycler lid clearance, and plate rigidity.

How to Choose PCR Plates

Skirt Format Fully-skirted plates have a full-height ANSI/SBS-compliant border (127.76 × 85.47 mm footprint) and are required for robotic liquid handlers (Hamilton STAR, Tecan EVO, PerkinElmer JANUS) and automated stackers. Semi-skirted plates have a partial skirt providing enough rigidity for multichannel pipetting while maintaining thermal cycler block compatibility across a wider range of instruments. Non-skirted plates have no border and fit virtually any cycler block, including instruments whose compression lids would be obstructed by a full skirt. Well Profile: Standard vs Low-Profile Standard-profile 0.2 mL wells are used with conventional (tall) block cyclers. Low-profile 0.1 mL wells are required for fast-block instruments, including the Applied Biosystems QuantStudio, Bio-Rad CFX96 Fast, and Roche LightCycler 480, where the reduced well depth shortens the thermal path to the sample. Colour: Clear, White, or Black Clear plates allow visual inspection of well volumes and are the default for end-point PCR. White plates increase qPCR sensitivity in bottom-read optical systems by reflecting fluorescence emission back through the detector. Black plates reduce background fluorescence in probe-based assays where cross-well optical interference is a concern. Sealing Compatibility Skirted and semi-skirted plates seal reliably with adhesive films and heat sealers; the rigid skirt supports even film application and reduces edge-well evaporation. Non-skirted plates require cap mats or adhesive seals that adhere directly to the well rim.

Specifications Context

PCR plates are moulded from virgin, low-extractable medical-grade polypropylene; well walls are uniformly thin (typically 0.25–0.35 mm) to maximise thermal conductivity. ANSI/SBS footprint standard (127.76 × 85.47 mm) applies to skirted plates for instrument interoperability. Plates are certified DNase-free, RNase-free, human DNA-free, and PCR inhibitor-free per lot. Cut corners (typically at H1/A12 position) and alpha-numeric well labelling aid plate orientation.Thermo Fisher SuperPlate skirted formats are the leading references for robotic applications; semi-skirted plates from Sorenson and equivalent lines serve the broad research market.

What Are Skirted PCR Plates?

Skirted PCR plates are 96-well polypropylene thermal cycling plates with a full-height plastic border — the skirt — surrounding the well array. The skirt raises the overall plate height to match the ANSI/SBS microplate footprint standard (127.76 × 85.47 mm external dimensions), creating a uniform grip surface that robotic arms, plate grippers, and automated stackers can handle reliably. They are the required format for liquid-handling automation platforms and high-throughput PCR workflows where consistent plate positioning is critical. Choose fully skirted plates when your workflow involves robotic liquid handling, automated stackers, or plate readers requiring SBS-compliant positioning.

How to Choose Skirted PCR Plates

Well Profile: Low-Profile vs Standard Low-profile 0.1 mL wells are the current default for skirted qPCR plates; the reduced well depth minimises dead volume and supports faster thermal ramp rates on fast-block instruments, including Bio-Rad CFX96 Fast, Applied Biosystems QuantStudio, and Roche LightCycler 480. Standard-profile 0.2 mL wells are used with conventional tall-block cyclers and maximise reaction volume capacity. Colour: Clear, White, or Black Clear skirted plates are the standard for visual inspection and top-read fluorescence systems. White plates increase qPCR sensitivity by up to 2-fold on bottom-read optical configurations by reflecting fluorescence emission back through the detector. Black plates reduce inter-well optical crosstalk in probe-based assays where background fluorescence must be minimised. Two-Component vs One-Component Construction One-component (single polypropylene) skirted plates are cost-effective for general use. Two-component designs combine a polypropylene well array with a polycarbonate skirt to eliminate plate warping at high cycling temperatures, enabling precise robotic positioning even after repeated thermal stress. Barcoding Barcoded skirted plates support LIMS integration and automated sample tracking across multi-step workflows. Barcodes are typically laser-etched (permanent) or adhesive-applied; confirm barcode type before integrating with your lab information management system. Cut Corner Orientation A cut corner at the H1 position (standard) or A12 position aids correct plate orientation in cyclers and liquid handlers. Confirm the required cut corner with your instrument's loading specification.

Specifications Context

Skirted PCR plates conform to ANSI/SBS (also called ANSI/SLAS 1-2004) footprint standards: 127.76 × 85.47 mm with 9 mm well spacing. Well walls are uniformly thin (0.25–0.35 mm) virgin polypropylene; maximum well volume with adhesive film seal is 0.2 mL for standard and 0.1 mL for low-profile formats. Certified DNase-free, RNase-free, human DNA-free, and PCR inhibitor-free per independent lot testing. Thermo Scientific SuperPlate are the leading references for demanding automation applications. Storage Boxes & Racks

What Are Laboratory Storage Boxes and Racks?

Laboratory storage boxes and racks are essential organizational systems used to store, organize, and protect cryogenic vials, microcentrifuge tubes, centrifuge tubes, and microscope slides across freezers, cold rooms, and benchtop environments. Storage boxes are typically lidded, grid-based containers used for long-term sample organization in ultra-low temperature conditions, while racks are open-frame supports used for active handling during laboratory workflows such as pipetting, vortexing, and reaction setup.
Cryogenic storage boxes are commonly designed to hold 81 vials (9×9 format) or 100 vials (10×10 format), and are compatible with storage conditions ranging from –196 °C in liquid nitrogen vapor phase to +121 °C for autoclave sterilization (depending on material). Tube racks, on the other hand, provide stable upright positioning of tubes during active benchwork and are not primarily intended for long-term freezer storage.

How to Choose Storage Boxes and Racks

Vial Format and Capacity
The first selection criterion is compatibility with tube size and grid layout. The most common format is the 81-place (9×9) box designed for 1.0–2.0 mL cryovials. Smaller or specialized formats may accommodate 5 mL tubes or different vial diameters depending on grid spacing. Proper matching ensures secure fit, easy retrieval, and consistent sample organization in high-density storage systems.
Temperature Range
Material selection determines allowable storage conditions. Polycarbonate cryogenic boxes are the most versatile, supporting temperatures from liquid nitrogen levels (–196 °C) through –80 °C freezer storage and up to autoclave sterilization at +121 °C. Cardboard freezer boxes with moisture-resistant coating are designed for economical freezer storage and can withstand ultra-low temperatures, but they are not suitable for autoclaving or long-term moisture exposure.
Tube Rack Materials and Use
Polypropylene racks are widely used because they are autoclavable and chemically resistant, making them suitable for sterile workflows. ABS and polystyrene racks provide lower-cost alternatives for general laboratory bench use but are not designed for autoclave conditions. For freezer organization, stainless steel racks are often used to hold multiple cryoboxes within –80 °C upright freezer systems, improving accessibility and spatial organization.
Slide Storage Boxes
Microscope slide storage boxes are designed to protect standard 25 × 75 mm slides. They are available in 25-, 50-, and 100-slide capacities. Polypropylene versions are autoclavable and suitable for sterilized workflows, while fiberboard or ABS versions are typically used for room-temperature archival storage and transport.
Color Coding and Sample Identification
Color-coded storage boxes are widely used in biobanking and high-throughput laboratories to quickly differentiate sample groups without opening boxes or reading labels at freezer temperatures. Common systems include multiple lid colors paired with alphanumeric grids inside the box, enabling precise sample tracking and retrieval in large inventories.

Specifications Context

Modern polycarbonate cryogenic storage boxes are engineered for extreme temperature stability, typically rated from –196 °C to +121 °C, allowing use across liquid nitrogen vapor phase storage, –80 °C freezers, and autoclave sterilization cycles. Cardboard freezer boxes are coated to resist moisture ingress and are optimized for cost-efficient high-density storage in ultra-low temperature environments.
The 81-place (9×9 grid) polycarbonate cryobox remains the standard format in most biorepositories and clinical research facilities due to its compatibility with SBS footprint freezer systems and automated inventory tracking workflows. These systems are widely used in genomics, cell banking, and pharmaceutical research environments.
