Sample Storage Container

What are Urine Collection Products?

Urine collection products for laboratory use are containers and preservative systems designed to collect, stabilize, and transport urine specimens for urinalysis (UA), urine culture (C&S), nucleic acid-based testing (NAAT for STIs), cell-free DNA (cfDNA) liquid biopsy, and 24-hour timed collections. Formats include sterile cups (30–60 mL), preservative tubes (5–50 mL), vacuum-draw urine transfer tubes, 24-hour collection containers (2–3 L), and preservative-prefilled devices for ambient-temperature stabilization of DNA, RNA, and proteins. Choose urine collection products with an active preservative when specimens cannot be processed within 2 hours of collection, when samples must be shipped to a centralized lab, or when nucleic acid integrity over 24+ hours is required.

How to Choose Urine Collection Products

Application: Culture vs. NAAT vs. Nucleic Acid Research For culture (C&S), use sterile cups or boric acid preservative tubes. For NAAT (STI panels for Chlamydia, Gonorrhea), use sterile cups or manufacturer-validated transfer tubes; confirm with your platform's IFU (e.g., Hologic Aptima Combo 2 uses a specific urine transport tube). For nucleic acid research (cfDNA, RNA, protein), use dedicated urine preservative tubes (Norgen, Streck) that stabilize analytes for up to 72 hours at room temperature. Volume: Random vs. 24-Hour Collection Random midstream urine (10–30 mL) is adequate for urinalysis, culture, and NAAT. Timed 24-hour collections (total volume 500–3000 mL) require large-volume containers with the appropriate preservative for the ordered panel. Mixing 24-hour containers with different preservatives is a common error—verify the correct preservative type with the laboratory before dispensing to the patient. Preservative Compatibility Boric acid tubes maintain bacterial counts for culture up to 24 hours at room temperature. Boric acid is NOT compatible with NAAT workflows—it inhibits PCR. For NAAT, use plain sterile containers or manufacturer-specific transfer tubes. For liquid biopsy cfDNA, Streck Cell-Free DNA Urine Preservative maintains cell integrity and prevents genomic DNA contamination for up to 72 hours. Sterility All urine containers intended for culture must be certified sterile. Containers for NAAT must be certified DNase-free and RNase-free to prevent nucleic acid contamination from the container. Confirm sterility and nuclease-free certification in the manufacturer's datasheet before use in molecular workflows. Automated Compatibility For high-throughput labs using automated urine analyzers (Sysmex UF-5000, Siemens CLINITEK), confirm that the collection tube format and cap design are compatible with tube-handling robotics. Copan UriSponge® (FDA-cleared October 2024) is a boric-acid-free device validated for direct loading on WASP® automation systems.

Specifications Context

Standard urine collection cups are manufactured from transparent polypropylene (PP) or polystyrene (PS) with wide-mouth, screw-cap lids. Sterile cups rated for culture meet ISO 7886 and are non-pyrogenic. Boric acid preservative tubes contain approximately 1.8% boric acid, stabilizing bacterial counts by creating a bacteriostatic environment. Norgen urine preservative tubes (5–50 mL, available in multiple sizes) stabilize DNA, RNA, microRNA, and protein from fresh urine for over 2 years at room temperature per manufacturer validation data. As of 2026, liquid biopsy studies using urine cfDNA routinely use Streck Cell-Free DNA Urine Preservative (3 mL per 30 mL urine) as the standard stabilization protocol in published clinical research protocols.

How to Choose From All Centrifuge Tube Formats

Volume and Rotor Compatibility
Selecting the correct tube size is essential for safe and efficient centrifugation. Microtubes ranging from 0.5–2 mL are designed for microcentrifuges, while 5–10 mL midi tubes fit compatible benchtop centrifuge rotors. Larger 15 mL and 50 mL conical tubes are commonly used in clinical and research centrifuges. Always verify rotor compatibility before introducing a new tube format into your workflow.
Sterility Requirements
For sensitive applications such as RNA extraction, cell culture, and clinical diagnostics, sterile tubes certified free of RNase, DNase, and pyrogens are recommended. Non-sterile tubes can provide a cost-effective solution for routine DNA analysis, protein assays, and general sample storage where sterility is not critical.
Material Selection
Polypropylene tubes offer excellent durability, can be autoclaved at 121 °C, and resist many laboratory chemicals and solvents. Polystyrene tubes provide superior transparency, making it easier to monitor liquid levels and sample contents, although they are less resistant to heat and solvents.
Packaging and Inventory Planning
Microtubes are commonly available in pack sizes ranging from 500 to 1,000 units, while 15 mL and 50 mL conical tubes are often supplied in cases of 500. Laboratories with consistent usage may benefit from establishing recurring purchase orders to ensure uninterrupted supply.

Vacuum Bottles

What Are Vacuum Bottles?

Laboratory vacuum bottles are specialized receiver containers designed to withstand vacuum pressure during filtration workflows. They serve as the collection vessel in vacuum filtration systems, capturing filtered solutions immediately after they pass through a membrane filter. Vacuum bottles are commonly used for sterile filtration of cell culture media, biological buffers, aqueous reagents, protein solutions, and other heat-sensitive liquids that cannot be sterilized by autoclaving. They are also widely used as waste collection bottles in cell culture aspiration systems, where vacuum pressure removes spent media and wash solutions from culture vessels.
Unlike standard storage bottles, vacuum bottles are specifically engineered to maintain structural integrity under negative pressure without collapsing, deforming, or leaking during filtration.

How to Choose Vacuum Bottles

Membrane Type and Pore Size
When selecting a vacuum filtration system, membrane choice is often the most important factor. Polyethersulfone (PES) membranes provide high flow rates and low protein binding, making them the preferred option for cell culture media, buffers, and most biological solutions. Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membranes offer broader chemical compatibility and are often selected for solutions containing detergents or certain organic compounds.
For sterile filtration, a 0.22 µm membrane is the standard choice because it effectively removes bacteria and other contaminants. A 0.45 µm membrane is generally used for clarification, particulate removal, and HPLC mobile phase preparation rather than sterile applications.
System Volume
Vacuum filtration systems are commonly available in capacities ranging from 150 mL to 1000 mL. Smaller volumes are suitable for routine laboratory preparations, while 500 mL and 1000 mL systems are widely used for larger batches of media and buffer preparation. Matching bottle size to the expected filtration volume helps maximize efficiency and minimize handling steps.
Receiver Bottle Material
Polystyrene (PS) receiver bottles are commonly supplied with complete single-use vacuum filtration systems because they provide excellent clarity for monitoring liquid levels during filtration. PETG receiver bottles offer enhanced durability and broader temperature compatibility, making them suitable when filtered solutions may be stored at refrigerated or freezer temperatures after filtration.
Sterility Requirements
Most complete vacuum filtration systems are supplied sterile and individually packaged for immediate use. When purchasing replacement receiver bottles separately, laboratories should verify sterility specifications if the bottles will be used for sterile media or reagent storage after filtration.
Thread Compatibility
Many vacuum filtration systems utilize standardized GL45 threaded connections that allow compatibility between filtration funnels, receiver bottles, and related accessories. Confirming thread compatibility is important when combining components from different product lines or manufacturers.

Specifications Context

Modern vacuum filtration systems are typically supplied with PES or PVDF membrane options and are available in configurations ranging from 150 mL to 1000 mL. Many systems utilize GL45-threaded receiver bottles that integrate with standard laboratory filtration accessories and media bottle systems. Angled hose-barb vacuum connectors have become standard across most product lines because they accommodate a wide range of vacuum tubing sizes without requiring additional adapters. As of 2026, vacuum filtration remains the preferred method for sterile preparation of heat-sensitive biological solutions in research, pharmaceutical, biotechnology, and clinical laboratories.

Volumetric Flasks

What Are Volumetric Flasks?

Volumetric flasks are precision-calibrated glass vessels with a flat-bottomed pear-shaped body, a long, narrow neck, and a single etched or ceramic-printed calibration mark at the neck. They hold a precisely defined volume of liquid at a specified temperature (20°C) — used to prepare standard solutions of exactly known molarity or concentration, dilute samples to a defined final volume for analytical work, and make reference standards in analytical chemistry and quality control. Globe Scientific volumetric flasks at MBP are manufactured from borosilicate glass conforming to ASTM E288 and ISO 1042, with Class A (tightest tolerance) and Class B (2× Class A tolerance) options. Choose Class A volumetric flasks for analytical chemistry, standard solution preparation, and regulated QC work; choose Class B for routine dilutions and non-critical volumetric preparation.

How to Choose Volumetric Flasks

Class A vs. Class B Class A volumetric flasks conform to ASTM E288 / ISO 1042 Class A tolerances — e.g., ±0.10mL on a 100mL flask, ±0.30mL on a 500mL flask, ±0.40mL on a 1,000mL flask. Class B flasks have tolerances exactly twice as wide as Class A. Class A flasks may include individual calibration certificates (traceable to NIST) and batch Certificates of Conformance for regulated laboratory environments. Wide-Mouth vs. Standard Standard volumetric flasks have a narrow neck opening suited for liquid-to-liquid dilution. Wide-mouth volumetric flasks have a larger neck opening designed for dissolving solid solutes — pellets, powders, and slow-dissolving materials — where a narrow neck would cause solid-to-wall contact and residue loss during transfer. Size and Fill Procedure Common analytical sizes: 25mL, 50mL, 100mL, 250mL, 500mL, 1,000mL. Correct fill technique: dissolve solute in a small volume of solvent first in a separate beaker, cool to 20°C, transfer quantitatively to the flask, then add solvent gradually to within a few mL of the mark, mix, then make up to the mark dropwise. Stoppers: Glass vs. Polyethylene Glass ground-glass stoppers are chemically inert for most reagents. Polyethylene (PE) caps are recommended for strong base solutions (NaOH) or HF — reagents that can etch glass or cause stoppers to seize in the neck.

Specifications Context

Globe Scientific volumetric flasks are manufactured from borosilicate glass 3.3 conforming to ASTM E288 and ISO 1042. Calibrations are specified at 20°C — temperature deviations shift the enclosed volume due to glass and liquid thermal expansion. Volumetric flasks should not be used as heating vessels; heat causes volume drift from the calibrated mark. Class A tolerance for a 250mL flask is ±0.15mL; for a 1,000mL flask, ±0.40mL. MBP stocks Class A, Class B, and wide-mouth formats from Globe Scientific for labs worldwide.

Vortex Mixers Accessories

What are vortex mixer accessories?

Vortex mixer accessories are the interchangeable cup heads, foam inserts, and platform adapters that convert a standard single-tube vortex mixer to batch-process multiple tubes or different vessel formats simultaneously. The standard single-tube cup head can be replaced with a multi-tube foam insert holding 6 to 24 microcentrifuge tubes, a tube strip or microplate adapter, or a platform-style attachment for larger vessel formats. These accessories are typically instrument-specific, using a proprietary attachment mechanism that varies between vortex mixer brands.

How to choose vortex mixer accessories

Select foam inserts by the tube format they accommodate
Foam inserts for vortex mixers are sized to hold specific tube formats by pressing the closed tube caps into the foam at defined positions: standard microcentrifuge inserts hold 1.5 mL and 2 mL tubes, larger foam blocks accommodate 15 mL and 50 mL conical tubes, and low-profile inserts hold 0.5 mL tubes or PCR strip tubes in defined arrays. Check that the insert format matches the tube types you use most and that the insert is rated for your vortex mixer's speed range.
Confirm accessory compatibility with your vortex mixer model
Vortex mixer accessories attach via model-specific connectors — threaded onto the drive spindle or clipped onto the instrument head — and are not universally compatible between brands or models. Always check that the specific accessory is listed as compatible with your vortex mixer model before ordering.
Use a microplate adapter for 96-well plate mixing
Microplate vortex adapters replace the standard cup head with a flat or recessed platform sized to hold a standard 96-well plate, allowing entire plates to be mixed in continuous mode for ELISA plate washing steps, microplate cell resuspension, and plate-format biochemical assays. The adapter should be rated for the speed at which it will be used to prevent plate sliding.
Check that foam insert speed ratings are compatible with your operating speed
Foam inserts are rated for a maximum operating speed, and using a foam insert at speeds above its rating risks tubes not being securely retained by the foam compression at high rpm. Confirm that the insert's rated speed covers your intended operating speed before batch-processing valuable samples.
Consider a universal platform adapter for flexible use
Some vortex mixer manufacturers offer a universal platform adapter that replaces the cup head with a flat non-slip platform, accepting a wide range of vessel formats using a non-slip mat for retention. While less format-specific than a dedicated foam insert, a universal platform provides flexibility for less common vessel formats.

Specifications context

Foam inserts work by compressing foam around tube caps to provide frictional retention during high-speed oscillation; foam material and cell size determine tube sizes accommodated and maximum safe speed. As of 2026, inserts accommodating PCR strip tubes alongside microcentrifuge tubes in a single insert have become available, reducing the number of separate formats needed.

Wash Bottles

What Are Laboratory Wash Mouth Bottles?

Laboratory wash bottles, also known as squeeze bottles or wash mouth bottles, are flexible LDPE containers available in 250 mL, 500 mL, and 1000 mL capacities. They feature a narrow dispensing nozzle or integrated draw-tube spout that delivers a controlled stream of liquid when the bottle is squeezed by hand. The flexibility of LDPE enables this dispensing action, making it the preferred material for wash bottles. These bottles are commonly used for rinsing laboratory glassware with distilled or deionized water, dispensing solvents during sample preparation, flushing residues during titrations and extractions, and directing liquids into narrow-neck vessels. Globe Scientific wash bottles are available with color-coded polypropylene caps and GHS-labeled safety-vented options for handling volatile solvents. Safety-vented wash bottles should always be used with volatile solvents such as ethanol, methanol, isopropanol, and acetone to prevent pressure build-up caused by vapor expansion.

How to Choose Wash Mouth Bottles

Vented vs. Non-Vented
Non-vented wash bottles are suitable for deionized water, distilled water, and other non-volatile aqueous solutions. Safety-vented wash bottles include a pressure-relief vent in the dispensing nozzle, allowing solvent vapors to escape safely and reducing the risk of pressure accumulation. These bottles are recommended for volatile solvents such as ethanol, methanol, isopropanol, and acetone. Globe Scientific GHS-labeled wash bottles combine safety venting with pre-printed hazard labeling for improved chemical identification and compliance.
Color-Coded Cap System
Color-coded caps help prevent reagent mix-ups in busy laboratory environments. A commonly used convention is blue for water, red for ethanol, yellow for isopropanol, green for methanol, and white for custom labeling or general use. Establishing a consistent color-coding system throughout the laboratory helps improve safety and workflow efficiency.
Wide Mouth vs. Standard Design
Standard wash bottles use a narrow draw tube extending to the base of the bottle, allowing liquid dispensing while the bottle remains upright. Wide-mouth wash bottles feature a larger neck opening, making refilling from bulk containers, carboys, or reagent bottles faster and easier. Laboratories that refill bottles frequently often prefer wide-mouth designs to reduce spills and simplify handling.
Volume Selection
The 500 mL wash bottle is the most common laboratory size, providing a balance between capacity and ease of handling. A 250 mL bottle is ideal when smaller volumes are sufficient or greater dispensing control is required. For high-throughput environments where liquids are used continuously, 1000 mL bottles minimize refill frequency and improve efficiency.

Transfer Pipettes

What are disposable transfer pipettes?

Disposable transfer pipettes are single-use plastic liquid-handling tools made from low-density polyethylene (LDPE). They are designed as a one-piece bulb-and-stem system used for transferring, dispensing, and handling small volumes of liquids in laboratory workflows.
They are commonly used as a safer and more convenient alternative to glass Pasteur pipettes. Being plastic and disposable, they eliminate the risk of breakage, reduce cross-contamination, and remove the need for separate rubber bulbs. The flexible bulb allows controlled aspiration and dispensing of reagents, samples, and solutions.

What you will find:

Graduated transfer pipettes – for approximate volume measurement and controlled dispensing

Non-graduated transfer pipettes – for simple liquid transfer without measurement markings

Fine-tip transfer pipettes – for small droplets and precise spot dispensing

Sterile transfer pipettes – for microbiology and contamination-sensitive workflows

Non-sterile transfer pipettes – for routine laboratory use

Disposable Pasteur pipettes – for general single-use liquid handling

How to choose transfer pipettes

Tip style Fine-tip pipettes are used for precise work such as microplate spotting and small-volume handling. Standard tips are suitable for general transfers, while wide-bore designs are better for viscous liquids or blood samples. Longer stems help access deep containers.
Capacity and volume handling Select pipettes based on typical working volumes. Smaller pipettes are suitable for low-volume transfers, while larger ones are used for routine sample handling. The effective draw volume depends on bulb capacity and usage technique.
Graduated vs non-graduated Graduated pipettes allow approximate volume estimation and are useful in clinical and diagnostic workflows. Non-graduated pipettes are intended for general dispensing where precise measurement is not required.
Sterility requirements Sterile pipettes are used in microbiology, cell culture, and clinical applications where contamination control is essential. Non-sterile versions are suitable for general laboratory and teaching use.
Length and accessibility Long pipettes are preferred for deep vessels such as flasks and bottles, while shorter designs are used for compact tubes and small workspaces.

Specifications context

Disposable LDPE transfer pipettes are widely used laboratory consumables for general-purpose liquid handling in research, clinical, and educational environments. They are available in sterile and non-sterile formats with multiple tip designs and capacities to support different workflows.

Wide Mouth Bottles

What Are Wide Mouth Laboratory Bottles?

Wide-mouth laboratory bottles are storage containers designed with a broad neck opening, typically ranging from 38 mm to 63 mm in diameter, allowing easy filling, dispensing, and cleaning. Their large opening makes them ideal for handling powders, granules, viscous liquids, biological samples, and other materials that are difficult to transfer through narrow-neck containers. Globe Scientific Diamond RealSeal wide-mouth bottles are available in several materials, including HDPE, polypropylene (PP), LDPE, and PETG, each suited to different laboratory applications. HDPE bottles offer excellent chemical resistance and low-temperature performance, PP bottles provide autoclavability, LDPE bottles offer flexibility, and PETG bottles are commonly used for sterile media storage. For laboratories requiring maximum storage efficiency and sterilization capability, PP square wide-mouth bottles are often the preferred option because they are autoclavable and utilize shelf space more effectively than round bottles.

How to Choose Wide Mouth Bottles

Round vs. Square Design
Round wide-mouth bottles are the traditional laboratory format and fit easily into standard storage racks and holders. Their curved interior walls help reduce material retention during dispensing and cleaning. Square bottles maximize storage efficiency by reducing unused space between containers on shelves and inside refrigerators. They also provide flat surfaces for labels, making identification easier and improving label adhesion. Laboratories managing large inventories often favor square bottles for their superior space utilization.
Material and Temperature Requirements
HDPE wide-mouth bottles are suitable for general-purpose chemical, reagent, and sample storage. They offer broad chemical compatibility and can be used in low-temperature environments, including standard laboratory freezers and many ultra-low temperature applications. Polypropylene wide-mouth bottles are the preferred choice when sterilization is required, as they can be autoclaved at 121°C without deformation. LDPE bottles provide flexibility and are useful when gentle squeezing or easy handling is beneficial, although they are not intended for autoclaving. PETG bottles combine excellent clarity with durability and are commonly selected for sterile media preparation and storage.
Amber Bottles for Light-Sensitive Materials
Amber wide-mouth bottles help protect photosensitive materials from UV and visible light exposure. They are commonly used for storing light-sensitive powders, chemicals, biological reagents, and pharmaceutical compounds. When long-term light protection is required, amber HDPE bottles provide an effective and economical storage solution.
Volume Selection
Smaller bottles in the 30–60 mL range are ideal for standards, reference materials, and small sample aliquots. Mid-size bottles between 125 mL and 500 mL are commonly used for working reagents, buffers, and routine laboratory materials. Larger bottles ranging from 1 L to 2 L are suitable for bulk powders, stock solutions, and frequently accessed laboratory reagents.
