Hotplate & Stirrer Accessories

What Are Hotplate and Stirrer Accessories?

Hotplate and stirrer accessories are supplementary components for single-position and multi-position hotplate stirrers that improve temperature accuracy, expand vessel compatibility, enable reflux setups, and maintain equipment in working condition. The most important accessory for research-grade hotplate use is an external temperature probe, which monitors actual solution temperature rather than hotplate surface temperature, which can be 20 to 50 degrees C higher than the liquid in the vessel. PTFE stir bars in standard cylindrical, oval, octagonal, cross-shaped, and polygon geometries allow matching of bar shape to vessel type and mixing requirement. Support rods and clamp assemblies secure condensers, separating funnels, and other glassware above the hotplate for reflux chemistry. Magnetic stir bar retrieval wands recover stir bars from flasks without contaminating the solution. An external temperature probe is the single most impactful hotplate stirrer accessory: without one, you are controlling plate temperature, not solution temperature, and the two can differ by 20 to 50 degrees C.

How to Choose Hotplate and Stirrer Accessories

External temperature probes
Confirm probe type compatibility with the hotplate stirrer model: most digital hotplate stirrers accept either a PT1000 resistance temperature detector (RTD) or a Type K thermocouple, and these are not interchangeable between models. The probe is inserted directly into the solution and feeds temperature data back to the PID controller to maintain the solution (not the plate surface) at the setpoint. Probe length and sheath material (stainless steel, glass, or PTFE) should be matched to the vessel size and chemical compatibility requirements.
PTFE stir bars: geometry and size
PTFE stir bars are available in cylindrical, oval (egg-shaped), octagonal, cross (X-shape), polygon, and ring geometries. Cylindrical bars are the most common general-purpose format. Octagonal bars provide more turbulent mixing in flat-bottomed vessels than cylindrical bars. Cross-shaped bars improve mixing in round-bottom flasks by preventing the bar from riding the wall. Ring or hoop bars are used for mixing around fixed probes or frits inside the vessel. Stir bar length is selected to match vessel diameter, typically 30 to 50% of vessel inner diameter.
Support stands and clamp sets.
Support stands (rod-and-base assemblies) mount above or adjacent to the hotplate to hold condensers, addition funnels, thermometers, and other glassware in reflux setups. Confirm rod diameter compatibility with the clamp set (most lab glassware clamps fit 12.7 mm or 16 mm rods). Weighted bases provide stability for tall assemblies. Crossbar assemblies allow horizontal positioning of clamps at adjustable heights along the support rod.
Magnetic stir bar retrieval tools
Stir bar retrievers are magnetic wands encased in a non-contaminating sleeve (PTFE or glass) that attract and remove the stir bar from a vessel without inserting fingers or metal into the sample. Available as handheld wands or bench-mounted extractors. An essential accessory for labs processing multiple samples per day, as losing track of stir bars is among the most common minor equipment management issues in bench chemistry.
Replacement sensors and calibration weights
Temperature probes degrade after repeated heating cycles or chemical exposure; replace probes showing drift against a calibrated reference thermometer. For hotplate stirrer models with external calibration weights (balance verification), confirm the weight set is OIML or ASTM traceable for regulated workflows.

Specifications Context

PTFE stir bars should be inspected regularly for chipped or worn PTFE coating. Bare metal exposure from a chipped bar contaminates the sample with metallic particles and alters the bar's magnetic coupling properties, resulting in reduced mixing efficiency or bar stall at lower speeds. Discard and replace any stir bar showing PTFE damage. For regulated lab environments (GMP, ISO 17025), maintain a stir bar inventory log and retire bars on a scheduled basis. External temperature probes rated for immersion in aqueous solutions should be verified against a calibrated reference thermometer at least annually; probes showing more than 1 degree C deviation should be recalibrated or replaced.

How to Choose Test Tubes

Material: Glass vs. Polypropylene vs. Polystyrene Borosilicate glass 3.3 (ASTM E438 Type I, Class B) test tubes withstand direct flame, autoclave sterilization at 121 °C, and most solvents, acids, and bases. They are reusable and autoclavable, making them cost-effective over high-volume laboratory runs. Polystyrene (PS) disposable tubes offer outstanding optical clarity for flow cytometry (FACS), cell counting, and OD-based colorimetric assays, but cannot be autoclaved and should not be used with aromatic solvents or strong acids. Polypropylene (PP) tubes are chemically resistant, autoclavable, and available with screw caps for anaerobic culture or gas-generating reactions. Rimmed vs. Rimless Rimless test tubes (fire-polished ends) allow easier insertion of rubber or silicone stoppers and are preferred for plugging with cotton wool for microbial culture. Rimmed tubes have a flared lip that facilitates pouring and is compatible with spring-metal tube closures. Confirm your closure type before ordering in bulk. Size and Volume The most common test tube dimensions in clinical and research labs: 12×75 mm: ~5 mL capacity; standard for flow cytometry, FACS, serology 13×100 mm: ~10 mL; general culture and chemistry 16×100 mm: ~14 mL; culture and chemistry 16×125 mm: ~17 mL; microbiological culture 18×150 mm: ~25 mL; larger-volume digests and culture Wall thickness of 1.2 mm (light wall, borosilicate 3.3) is the standard for general lab use; heavy-wall versions are used for digestions and applications involving vacuum or pressure. Sterile vs. Non-Sterile Sterile borosilicate glass culture tubes (individually wrapped or bulk-sterilized) are required for microbial culture, cell culture, and any application where contamination would invalidate the result. Non-sterile tubes are adequate for chemistry, spectroscopy, and other abiotic applications. Disposable PS tubes from Corning (PYREX™) and Globe Scientific are supplied sterile or non-sterile; confirm the specification on the lot certificate.

Specifications Context

Borosilicate glass 3.3 test tubes have a linear thermal expansion coefficient of 3.3 × 10⁻⁶ K⁻¹, providing resistance to thermal shock from room temperature to 300 °C (direct flame) and from 0 to 121 °C (autoclave cycles). Light-wall tubes (1.2 mm uniform wall thickness) provide the standard for general laboratory use; heavy-wall variants (2.0 mm) are used for digestion vessels and pressurized applications. Corning PYREX™ disposable round-bottom rimless glass tubes for tissue culture conform to ASTM standards and are the reference format for bacteriological serology and cell wash procedures. MBP supplies Globe Scientific and NEST Scientific test tube lines for research and clinical labs across the USA, Canada, and worldwide.

How to Choose Glass Culture Tubes

Material: Borosilicate vs. Polystyrene
Borosilicate glass culture tubes offer excellent thermal and chemical resistance, making them suitable for repeated autoclaving at 121°C and exposure to most laboratory acids and bases. Their low extractable content minimizes contamination and pH changes during sensitive biological and chemical procedures. Polystyrene culture tubes provide excellent optical clarity and are commonly used for routine laboratory assays and serial dilutions, but they are intended for single-use applications and are not suitable for autoclaving.

Size and Capacity
The most commonly used culture tube sizes are 16 × 75 mm with an approximate capacity of 8 mL and 16 × 100 mm with an approximate capacity of 12 mL. Smaller formats such as 12 × 75 mm and 13 × 100 mm are also available for specialized applications. Selection should be based on sample volume requirements, incubation conditions, and compatibility with existing laboratory racks and equipment.

Rim Style and Cap Compatibility
Rimless culture tubes are designed for use with cotton plugs, foam stoppers, or push-in closures and are widely used in microbiology laboratories. Screw-cap culture tubes provide a more secure seal for specimen transport, long-term storage, and contamination-sensitive applications. Laboratories should verify tube dimensions and rack compatibility before purchasing.

Quantity and Pack Format
Culture tubes are commonly supplied in bulk quantities ranging from 250 to 1,000 units per case. High-volume laboratories often purchase case quantities to support routine testing, culture preparation, and clinical workflows while simplifying inventory management and purchasing processes.

Thermal Labels

What Are Laboratory Thermal Labels?

Laboratory thermal labels are adhesive labels designed for printing by direct-thermal or thermal-transfer desktop label printers — the two print technologies used for barcode and specimen ID generation in research, clinical, and diagnostic labs. Direct-thermal labels activate a heat-sensitive coating to produce an image without ink or ribbon; thermal-transfer labels use a resin or wax ribbon to fuse ink into the label surface. Thermal labels cover a wide range of container types: cryo vials, microcentrifuge tubes, PCR strips, 15/50 mL conicals, microscope slides, and specimen collection bags. Choose thermal-transfer labels for any sample requiring chemical resistance, temperatures above +50 °C, or long-term barcode legibility; choose direct-thermal for low-cost, short-to-medium-term applications.

How to Choose Laboratory Thermal Labels

Print Technology Compatibility Confirm whether the printer is direct-thermal (no ribbon required, e.g., Zebra GK420d, DYMO LabelWriter) or thermal-transfer (ribbon required, e.g., Zebra ZT230, Datamax M-Class). The two label types are not interchangeable — a thermal-transfer label will not print correctly in a direct-thermal printer and vice versa. Temperature and Chemical Exposure Direct-thermal label coatings degrade above approximately 50–60 °C and with prolonged UV exposure, limiting their use to room-temperature and short-term cold storage applications. Thermal-transfer labels with a resin ribbon produce output resistant to temperatures up to +100 °C, ethanol, xylene, and sanitizing wipes — required for autoclave tracking, histology, and GLP-regulated sample management. Container and Size Match Label dimensions must match the printable area of the label and the geometry of the container. Common lab thermal label widths are 0.5–2 inches; lengths are 0.25–3 inches. Verify dimensions against the container's flat-printable surface, accounting for any wrap-around on curved vials. Roll Core and Printer Compatibility Standard roll cores are 1-inch inner diameter for compact desktop printers; 3-inch cores fit high-volume industrial label printers. Confirm the printer's maximum roll diameter and label width capability before selecting roll format. Material: Paper vs. Polyester Paper-based thermal labels cost less and are suitable for ambient-temperature, short-duration applications (reagent dating, sample intake). Polyester thermal labels are moisture-resistant, more tear-resistant, and rated for demanding environments including freezers and chemical splash — specified for long-term specimen tracking and any application where label durability is a safety or compliance requirement.

Specifications Context

Direct-thermal label paper weight is typically 58–80 g/m²; polyester variants are 50–100 µm thick. Standard roll dimensions are 2.25 inches × 1.25 inches (common for specimen tubes) and 4 inches × 6 inches (common for shipping and larger specimen bags). Print resolution for lab barcode labels should be 300 dpi for 1D/2D barcodes on labels smaller than 1 inch × 0.5 inch — 203 dpi produces legible output on larger-format labels.

Vacuum Filtration

What are Vacuum Bottle-Top Filter Systems?

Vacuum bottle-top filter systems are single-use, sterile filtration assemblies consisting of a graduated polystyrene funnel with an integrated membrane filter bonded to a polystyrene receiver bottle, connected by a hose-port adaptor to a house vacuum line or benchtop vacuum pump. The applied negative pressure (−50 to −100 kPa) draws liquid through the membrane into the receiver bottle, which is sealed after filtration for immediate use or cold-room storage.

How to Choose Vacuum Filtration Systems

PES vs. PVDF Membrane for Vacuum Filtration PES membranes provide low protein binding (~1–2 µg/cm²), high flow rates, and broad aqueous-solution compatibility — the standard for routine DMEM, RPMI, HBSS, PBS, and supplement-containing media sterilization. PVDF membranes have slightly lower protein binding than PES and greater chemical resistance to mild organic solvents, mild acids, and alkaline solutions. Use PVDF when filtering protein-rich solutions (FBS, antibody preparations, conditioned medium with high protein content) or when mild organic solvents are present in the filter solution. Volume Selection 250 mL systems (50 mm diameter membrane, 50 mL funnel) suit small media aliquots, supplement solutions, and transfection reagent preparations. 500 mL systems (90 mm diameter membrane, 150 mL funnel) are the routine lab workhorse for standard 500 mL media bottle preparation and FBS filtration. 1,000 mL systems (90 mm diameter membrane, 350 mL funnel) handle full-liter media preparations and large-volume buffer sterilization. All NEST systems include a pre-attached, graduated polystyrene receiver bottle in the corresponding volume. Pore Size: 0.10 µm vs. 0.22 µm vs. 0.45 µm 0.22 µm is the sterilizing grade per USP <1229.2> and ICH Q9: retains all bacteria and fungi; used for routine cell culture media, PBS, and buffer preparation. 0.45 µm is the clarification grade: used as a pre-filtration step before 0.22 µm to remove large particulates from turbid or high-biomass samples (FBS, conditioned media, cell culture supernatants, crude lysates), extending 0.22 µm filter throughput by 3–5× on difficult samples. 0.10 µm is the mycoplasma-removal grade: required when preparing media for Mycoplasma-sensitive primary cell culture or when processing serum or supplementary reagents that may harbor Mycoplasma species. Note that 0.10 µm filtration is substantially slower than 0.22 µm due to the tighter membrane pore structure. Practical Tips for Maximum Throughput Pre-wet the membrane by briefly passing 5–10 mL of sterile water through before the sample — this wets the hydrophilic PES or PVDF membrane and reduces initial resistance. For FBS and other viscous solutions, pre-filter through 0.45 µm before the 0.22 µm step. Maintain a vacuum at −50 to −80 kPa; excessive vacuum (> −100 kPa) can shear fragile membrane pores and increase non-specific protein adsorption. Do not autoclave the assembled bottle-top filter — PES and PS components are not rated for autoclave sterilization.

Specifications Context

NEST Scientific vacuum bottle-top filters are manufactured from polystyrene funnel and receiver bottle components with PES or PVDF membranes. PES membranes have documented low protein binding (~1–2 µg/cm²) per NEST scientific USA FAQ. Membrane diameter: 250 mL volume → 50 mm; 500 mL and 1,000 mL → 90 mm. The hose connector design accommodates various standard vacuum hose diameters. Tissue Cassettes

What Are Tissue Cassettes?

Tissue cassettes are rectangular acetal polymer (POM) containers used in surgical pathology and research histology to carry gross tissue specimens—including resections, excisions, and large biopsy cores—from the grossing table through the complete paraffin processing workflow. Wide-slot perforations (approximately 1.5 mm) allow rapid reagent penetration and drainage during automated tissue processor cycles while preventing specimen loss for samples measuring 3 mm or larger in their smallest dimension. Following processing, the cassette base fits directly into a metal or disposable plastic base mold for paraffin embedding, and the completed paraffin block is archived with the cassette serving as the primary specimen identifier.
Standard tissue cassettes handle the majority of surgical pathology specimens; use biopsy cassettes for specimens smaller than approximately 3 mm.

How to Choose Tissue Cassettes

Writing Area Angle: 30° vs. 35°
Globe Scientific tissue cassettes are available with 30° and 35° angled writing surfaces to match Leica and Sakura cassette printer platen angles. Selecting the incorrect angle can create printing alignment issues and slow workflow efficiency. Laboratories should verify printer specifications before ordering case quantities.
Integral Lid vs. Separate Lid
Integral hinged-lid tissue cassettes snap closed without requiring a separate steel lid, reducing handling steps in high-volume grossing environments. Separate-lid cassettes are compatible with standard metal base molds and are often preferred in embedding stations where lids must be removed independently. Both formats are compatible with standard tissue processor baskets.
Color Coding
Globe Scientific offers tissue cassettes in more than ten standard colors. Many laboratories assign colors by specimen type or department to improve organization and reduce the risk of specimen identification errors during high-volume processing.
Pack Format: Standard Box vs. QuickLoad Sleeves
Standard 500-count dispenser boxes meet the needs of most laboratories. QuickLoad® and E-Z Load® sleeve formats provide pre-counted cassette stacks for rapid one-handed dispensing and are particularly useful in grossing stations processing more than 300 specimens per day.
Compatibility with Tissue Processors
The standard 40 × 28 × 6 mm cassette footprint is compatible with Leica ASP, Sakura VIP, Thermo Shandon Excelsior, and most other automated tissue processors without modification. Compatibility should be verified when ordering Mega or deep-body cassette variants.

Acetal polymer cassettes are dimensionally stable from 4°C refrigerated storage through approximately 65°C during paraffin infiltration. Globe Scientific maintains ISO 9001:2015 quality management certification, and lot-specific conformance documentation is available upon request. The standard 40 × 28 × 6 mm footprint is widely accepted by major tissue processor manufacturers and does not require instrument-specific modification. Tissue cassettes are research-use consumables and are not classified as medical devices or in vitro diagnostic (IVD) products.
