Single Channel Pipettors

What Are Single-Channel Pipettors?

A single-channel pipettor is the single most widely used liquid handling instrument in molecular biology, cell biology, and clinical research. It transfers precise volumes between 0.1 µL and 5,000 µL, one well or tube at a time, using an air-displacement piston mechanism. The piston creates a partial vacuum that aspirates liquid into a disposable tip; advancing the piston fully dispenses the liquid. A spring-loaded tip ejector releases the used tip without hand contact for contamination control. Manual models depend on finger force and offer simple, battery-free operation; electronic models add programmable aspiration/dispensing speeds, multi-dispense modes, and up to 5 custom pipetting programs. A set of four manual single-channel pipettors (P10, P20, P200, P1000) covers 95% of molecular biology liquid handling; add electronic models for high-throughput repetitive work.

How to Choose a Single-Channel Pipettor

Volume Range: Build a Complete Bench Set A standard four-pipettor bench set covers P10 (1–10 µL), P20 (2–20 µL), P200 (20–200 µL), and P1000 (100–1,000 µL). For sub-microliter work (sequencing, single-cell), add a P2 (0.2–2 µL). For large-volume dispensing (media prep, column loading), add a P5000 (1,000–5,000 µL). Avoid selecting a volume range that places your target dispense below 20% of the maximum — accuracy degrades at the low end of any range. Manual vs Electronic Manual single-channel pipettors (Eppendorf Research Plus, Gilson PIPETMAN Classic, Rainin Pipet-Lite XLS+) are the standard for routine lab work: field-calibratable, autoclavable, and requiring no power source. Electronic single-channel pipettors (Eppendorf Research Pro, Rainin Pipet-Lite XLS+ Electronic) add: programmable aspiration/dispense speed (5 speeds), multi-dispense (repeat pipetting) mode, mix mode, dilution mode, and backlight LCD volume display. Electronic models reduce hand fatigue in workflows exceeding 200–300 tip changes per day. Tip Compatibility Three tip systems cover the market: standard conical (universal fit — fits Eppendorf Research Plus, Gilson PIPETMAN, Rainin non-LTS, Thermo, Sartorius/BioHit); Rainin LTS cylindrical (requires LTS-specific tips — lower force insertion); Eppendorf epT.I.P.S. proprietary (tightest fit for Eppendorf instruments). Select the tip system that matches your pipettor purchase and existing tip inventory before committing to a brand. Autoclavability and Chemical Resistance Manual pipettors from Eppendorf, Gilson, and Rainin have fully autoclavable lower sections (121°C, 15 psi, 15 min). Electronic pipettors have autoclavable nose cones only — the electronic module cannot be autoclaved. Calibration and Service All single-channel pipettors are factory-calibrated per ISO 8655. Field recalibration tools are available for Eppendorf, Gilson, and Rainin to perform in-lab gravimetric verification without external service.

Specifications Context

ISO 8655 Part 2 accuracy spec for a 200 µL air-displacement pipettor: ±0.8 µL systematic error, ≤0.3 µL random error (Eppendorf Research Plus specification at 200 µL). Most manual pipettors weigh 70–120 g; electronic models weigh 150–220 g. Operating temperature range: typically 15–40°C. Eppendorf Research Plus, Gilson PIPETMAN Classic, and Rainin Pipet-Lite XLS+ LTS remain the three dominant single-channel pipettor platforms in North American research labs.

Narrow Mouth Bottles

What Are Narrow Mouth Laboratory Bottles?

Narrow-mouth laboratory bottles are storage containers designed with a small neck opening, typically between 18 mm and 38 mm in diameter. This design allows for controlled pouring, minimizes evaporation, reduces contamination risk, and helps limit vapor loss when storing volatile liquids. The most common narrow-mouth bottle style is the Boston round, which features a cylindrical body, rounded shoulders, and a threaded neck that provides excellent durability and efficient liquid handling. Globe Scientific Diamond RealSeal narrow-mouth bottles are available in HDPE, LDPE, and polypropylene (PP) materials, with capacities ranging from 4 mL to 8 L. Amber HDPE versions are also available for storing light-sensitive chemicals and reagents. For most laboratory applications, HDPE remains the preferred material due to its excellent chemical resistance and low extractables, while PP is selected when autoclaving is required.

How to Choose Narrow Mouth Bottles

Material Selection
HDPE is the standard choice for general laboratory reagent storage because it offers broad chemical compatibility, excellent durability, and resistance to low temperatures. LDPE provides similar chemical resistance but with greater flexibility, making small bottles easier to squeeze and pour. Polypropylene bottles are suitable for applications requiring sterilization, as they can withstand autoclaving at 121°C. Amber HDPE bottles are recommended for photosensitive compounds because they reduce exposure to UV and visible light that may degrade sensitive materials.
Volume Requirements
Small-volume bottles from 4 mL to 30 mL are commonly used for standards, reference materials, working solutions, and sample transport. Medium-sized bottles ranging from 60 mL to 500 mL are ideal for routine laboratory reagents, buffers, and water samples. Larger formats from 1 L to 8 L are typically used for bulk reagent storage, field sampling, media preparation, and industrial laboratory applications where larger quantities of liquid must be stored safely.
Closure Compatibility
Closure size is an important consideration when selecting narrow-mouth bottles. Smaller bottles typically use 18 mm closures, medium bottles commonly use 24 mm or 28 mm closures, and larger bottles use 38 mm closures. Using the correct cap size ensures a proper seal and prevents leaks, evaporation, and thread damage caused by mismatched closures.
Diamond RealSeal vs. Diamond Essentials
Diamond RealSeal bottles are supplied with attached caps and are individually packaged to provide convenience and consistent quality. Diamond Essentials bottles are designed for high-volume users and are supplied in bulk packaging, with bottles and caps packaged separately. Laboratories processing large numbers of samples often choose the Diamond Essentials range to reduce packaging costs while maintaining the same bottle performance.

Wide Mouth Bottles

What Are Wide Mouth Laboratory Bottles?

Wide-mouth laboratory bottles are storage containers designed with a broad neck opening, typically ranging from 38 mm to 63 mm in diameter, allowing easy filling, dispensing, and cleaning. Their large opening makes them ideal for handling powders, granules, viscous liquids, biological samples, and other materials that are difficult to transfer through narrow-neck containers. Globe Scientific Diamond RealSeal wide-mouth bottles are available in several materials, including HDPE, polypropylene (PP), LDPE, and PETG, each suited to different laboratory applications. HDPE bottles offer excellent chemical resistance and low-temperature performance, PP bottles provide autoclavability, LDPE bottles offer flexibility, and PETG bottles are commonly used for sterile media storage. For laboratories requiring maximum storage efficiency and sterilization capability, PP square wide-mouth bottles are often the preferred option because they are autoclavable and utilize shelf space more effectively than round bottles.

How to Choose Wide Mouth Bottles

Round vs. Square Design
Round wide-mouth bottles are the traditional laboratory format and fit easily into standard storage racks and holders. Their curved interior walls help reduce material retention during dispensing and cleaning. Square bottles maximize storage efficiency by reducing unused space between containers on shelves and inside refrigerators. They also provide flat surfaces for labels, making identification easier and improving label adhesion. Laboratories managing large inventories often favor square bottles for their superior space utilization.
Material and Temperature Requirements
HDPE wide-mouth bottles are suitable for general-purpose chemical, reagent, and sample storage. They offer broad chemical compatibility and can be used in low-temperature environments, including standard laboratory freezers and many ultra-low temperature applications. Polypropylene wide-mouth bottles are the preferred choice when sterilization is required, as they can be autoclaved at 121°C without deformation. LDPE bottles provide flexibility and are useful when gentle squeezing or easy handling is beneficial, although they are not intended for autoclaving. PETG bottles combine excellent clarity with durability and are commonly selected for sterile media preparation and storage.
Amber Bottles for Light-Sensitive Materials
Amber wide-mouth bottles help protect photosensitive materials from UV and visible light exposure. They are commonly used for storing light-sensitive powders, chemicals, biological reagents, and pharmaceutical compounds. When long-term light protection is required, amber HDPE bottles provide an effective and economical storage solution.
Volume Selection
Smaller bottles in the 30–60 mL range are ideal for standards, reference materials, and small sample aliquots. Mid-size bottles between 125 mL and 500 mL are commonly used for working reagents, buffers, and routine laboratory materials. Larger bottles ranging from 1 L to 2 L are suitable for bulk powders, stock solutions, and frequently accessed laboratory reagents.

Graduated Cylinders

What Are Graduated Cylinders?

Graduated cylinders are tall, narrow borosilicate glass or polymer vessels calibrated with multiple volume graduation marks, used to measure liquid volumes at bench scale — more accurately than beakers (±5% capacity) but less accurately than volumetric flasks (±0.05–0.1% capacity). They are the everyday volumetric tool in chemistry, biology, and clinical labs for measuring reagent volumes, preparing buffer dilutions, and transferring liquids where a precise but not analytically exact volume is required. Class A borosilicate glass graduated cylinders at MBP conform to ASTM E1272 / ISO 4788 tolerances. Choose Class A cylinders for applications where stated volume accuracy matters; choose Class B for routine measurements where a fast approximate reading is sufficient.

How to Choose Graduated Cylinders

Class A vs. Class B
Class A graduated cylinders conform to ASTM E1272 / ISO 4788 Class A tolerances — e.g., ±0.5 mL for a 100 mL cylinder, ±2.0 mL for a 1,000 mL cylinder. Class B tolerances are twice as wide as Class A. Class A cylinders are appropriate for protocols specifying cylinder-grade volume accuracy; Class B for routine lab measurements where tight tolerances are not required.
Single Scale vs. Dual Scale (mL/oz)
Single-scale cylinders are marked in mL only — cleaner graduation lines, easier to read, preferred for labs working exclusively in metric units. Dual-scale cylinders carry both mL and oz markings, useful in labs operating across metric and US customary units or for customer-facing applications requiring oz notation.
Autoclavable Glass vs. Plastic
Borosilicate glass graduated cylinders are autoclavable at 121°C, resistant to all common lab reagents, and reusable indefinitely with careful handling. PP plastic cylinders are shatterproof and autoclavable at 121°C but are not suitable for organic solvents or high heat above 135°C.
Size and Base Type
Common sizes: 10 mL, 25 mL, 50 mL, 100 mL, 250 mL, 500 mL, 1,000 mL, and 2,000 mL. Hexagonal bases provide better bench stability than round bases — important in high-traffic labs where tip-over risk is a concern.

Specifications Context

Borosilicate glass graduated cylinders conforming to ASTM E1272 / ISO 4788 are calibrated "to contain" (TC) the stated volume — the mark indicates the volume held in the cylinder, not delivered from it (Class A volumetric flasks are also TC). Reading technique: for aqueous solutions in glass, read the bottom of the curved meniscus at eye level to eliminate parallax error. Borosilicate 3.3 has a strain point of 515°C; autoclave tolerance is 121°C for standard sterilisation cycles. As of June 2026, MBP stocks Class A and Class B graduated cylinders in single and dual-scale formats for labs in the US, Canada, and worldwide.

Plastic Beakers

What Are Plastic Beakers?

Plastic beakers are shatterproof cylindrical laboratory vessels manufactured from polypropylene (PP) or polymethylpentene (PMP), designed for safe and lightweight liquid handling in environments where glass breakage is a concern. Polypropylene (PP) is the most commonly used material due to its strong chemical resistance to dilute acids, bases, alcohols, and most aqueous reagents, along with autoclavability at 121°C and permanently molded graduations that do not fade with use. Polymethylpentene (PMP) offers higher optical clarity and better heat tolerance, making it suitable for applications requiring visual monitoring of solutions.
Material: Polypropylene vs. Polymethylpentene
Polypropylene (PP) beakers are the standard choice in most laboratories because they are autoclavable at 121°C, cost-effective, and resistant to a wide range of aqueous reagents including dilute acids and bases. They are typically translucent and designed for general-purpose laboratory workflows. Polymethylpentene (PMP) beakers, on the other hand, offer near-glass optical clarity (approximately 90% light transmission) and can tolerate higher temperatures up to around 175°C, making them suitable for applications where visibility of the solution is important during mixing or heating.
Graduation Type: Molded-In
Plastic beakers at MBP feature molded-in graduations that are permanently embossed into the wall of the vessel. These markings remain legible even after repeated autoclaving, chemical exposure, and washing cycles, making them more durable than printed alternatives and ideal for long-term reuse.
Volume Range
MBP supplies plastic beakers in sizes ranging from 5 mL to 10,000 mL. Small-volume beakers (5–50 mL) are used for micro-scale reagent preparation, while mid-range sizes (250 mL–1,000 mL) are standard for routine buffer preparation. Large-capacity beakers (2,000–10,000 mL) are used for bulk reagent mixing, media preparation, and large-scale laboratory workflows.
Tri-Corner Beaker Option
Tri-corner (tri-pour) beakers are a specialized plastic format designed with three pour spouts for controlled dispensing and reduced dripping. These are commonly used in reagent distribution stations, waste handling, and workflows requiring frequent liquid transfer. They are typically made from polypropylene and complement standard round-form beakers.

Specifications Context

Polypropylene (PP) has a density of approximately 0.91 g/cm³ and is chemically resistant to dilute acids (HCl, H₂SO₄), bases (NaOH, KOH), alcohols, and most aqueous buffers. However, it is not compatible with concentrated oxidizing acids (such as concentrated nitric or sulfuric acid) or halogenated organic solvents (such as chloroform, methylene chloride, or xylene). Molded graduations typically maintain an accuracy of ±5% of total capacity. PMP provides higher transparency and improved heat resistance compared to PP but is generally more expensive.
MBP stocks plastic beakers in a full range of sizes from 5 mL to 10,000 mL, including standard round-form and tri-corner designs for institutional laboratory use.

Glass Beakers

What Are Glass Laboratory Beakers?

Glass laboratory beakers are wide-mouth borosilicate vessels with a flat base, pour spout, and volume graduation markings, used for heating liquids on hot plates, mixing reagents, preparing buffers, and performing titrations. Borosilicate glass (ASTM E960, USP Type I) is the standard material for lab-grade glass beakers because its low coefficient of thermal expansion (~3.3×10⁻⁶/K) provides excellent resistance to thermal shock while maintaining chemical inertness against most laboratory acids, bases, and organic solvents. Choose borosilicate glass beakers for high-heat protocols, organic solvent work, and applications where chemical purity and optical clarity are essential.

How to Choose Glass Beakers

Size: Matching Capacity to Workflow
Glass beaker size should be selected according to the volume of solution being prepared or heated. Small 50–100 mL beakers are commonly used for staining procedures, dyes, and small-scale reactions, while 250 mL beakers are suitable for routine buffer preparation and sample digestion. For larger laboratory workflows, 1,000 mL beakers are commonly used for standard media and buffer preparation, while 2,000 mL models provide additional capacity for larger batches and water-bath applications. Laboratories preparing bulk reagents or culture media often use 5,000–10,000 mL beakers. As a general guideline, fill beakers to no more than two-thirds of their nominal capacity during heating to allow for liquid expansion and reduce boil-over risk.
Graduation Type: Molded vs. Printed Dual-Scale
Molded graduations are embossed directly into the glass surface, making them resistant to solvents, cleaning procedures, and repeated autoclaving. Printed dual-scale graduations provide enhanced visibility and may include both metric and imperial measurements for convenience. Laboratories that frequently sterilize glassware often prefer molded graduations because they remain readable throughout the product's service life.
Form Factor
Low-form Griffin-style beakers are the most common laboratory beakers due to their wide, stable base and suitability for magnetic stirring and hot-plate heating. Tall-form Berzelius beakers provide a narrower profile and taller liquid column, making them useful for certain titration procedures, distillation work, and applications where splash reduction is desirable.
Autoclave Compatibility
Borosilicate glass beakers can be safely autoclaved at 121°C and are suitable for dry-heat sterilization up to 500°C. Beakers should never be sealed during autoclaving because thermal expansion of liquids may create pressure buildup. Although borosilicate glass maintains excellent dimensional stability, repeatedly autoclaved beakers should not be relied upon for precision volumetric measurements.

Specifications Context

Borosilicate glass beakers conforming to ASTM E960 provide graduation accuracy of approximately ±5% of total capacity at each marked volume. They withstand direct hot-plate heating, water baths, sand baths, autoclave sterilization at 121°C, and dry-heat sterilization up to 500°C. Borosilicate glass is resistant to most laboratory acids, alkalis, and organic solvents including hydrochloric acid, sulfuric acid, nitric acid, sodium hydroxide, ethanol, acetone, xylene, and chloroform. However, hydrofluoric acid (HF) should never be used with glass beakers because it attacks and dissolves glass surfaces.
