Instrument Configuration
Consumable selection depends on the instrument model and processing head installed. Most KingFisher Flex systems use a 96-well head designed for medium-throughput sample processing, while certain applications require a 24-well head for larger sample volumes. Always verify your instrument configuration before ordering consumables.
Sample Volume Requirements
The 96-well format is ideal for routine DNA and RNA extraction from blood, plasma, swabs, tissue lysates, and cultured cells. Applications requiring larger input volumes, such as circulating cell-free DNA isolation, environmental testing, or stool sample processing, often use the 24-well format, which accommodates significantly larger volumes per well.
Sterility Requirements
Non-sterile consumables are commonly used for standard nucleic acid purification and protein extraction workflows. Sterile plates and sterile plate-tip comb combination packs are recommended for cell-based applications, sensitive RNA workflows, and any procedure requiring aseptic processing conditions.
Individual Components vs. Combination Packs
Many laboratories purchase plates and tip combs separately to match workflow requirements. Combination packs containing both sterile plates and matching sterile tip combs simplify inventory management and ensure compatibility between components.
Downstream Application
For PCR, qPCR, sequencing, and library preparation workflows, purified samples are typically transferred into 96-well microplates with smaller working volumes. Applications requiring larger elution volumes may use deep well plates for the final collection step.

KingFisher consumables are manufactured from high-purity, low-binding polypropylene to reduce non-specific adsorption of DNA, RNA, proteins, and magnetic beads. They are produced under strict quality control standards to ensure dimensional consistency and compatibility with automated magnetic particle processors.
These consumables are widely used in molecular diagnostics, genomics, biobanking, pharmaceutical research, and clinical laboratories. Their standardized design supports reproducible extraction performance while maintaining compatibility with automated sample preparation workflows.
For laboratories requiring more general automation-compatible sample processing plates, deep well plates provide SBS-format compatibility with liquid handling systems from Hamilton, Tecan, Beckman Coulter, and other automation platforms. Immunoassay and ELISA workflows, however, require specialized assay plates designed for optical detection rather than magnetic bead processing.

Reagent Reservoirs

What are reagent reservoirs?

Reagent reservoirs are plastic troughs used to hold liquid reagents during multichannel pipetting. They are designed so that 8- or 12-channel pipettes can draw liquid from a shared pool at the same time, which makes filling 96-well or 384-well plates much faster and more consistent.
They are commonly used in ELISA, PCR/qPCR setup, cell culture, high-throughput screening, and general laboratory liquid handling. Instead of repeatedly aspirating from small tubes for each channel, the multichannel pipette dips into the reservoir once and distributes the reagent across multiple wells efficiently.
Reagent reservoirs are available in disposable or reusable formats and are typically made from polystyrene (for aqueous, low-risk reagents) or polypropylene (for stronger chemical resistance and reusable/autoclave applications). Some designs are single troughs, while others include multiple chambers or are compatible with robotic liquid handling systems.

How to choose reagent reservoirs

Volume
Select reservoir volume based on how much reagent is needed for your workflow. Smaller reservoirs (around 10–25 mL) are suitable for routine ELISA or PCR setups, while larger volumes (50–100 mL or more) are used for multi-plate runs or high-throughput workflows where the same reagent is dispensed repeatedly.
Material (PP vs PS)
Polypropylene reservoirs are chemically resistant and can handle solvents like DMSO, ethanol, and other harsher reagents. They are also autoclavable, making them suitable for sterile or reusable workflows. Polystyrene reservoirs are more cost-effective and typically used for aqueous buffers, ELISA reagents, and general non-hazardous laboratory work.
Bottom design
V-bottom or pyramid-bottom reservoirs reduce leftover liquid by guiding the reagent toward the pipette tip area. This helps minimize waste, which is especially important when working with expensive reagents like antibodies or fluorescent dyes.
Sterile vs non-sterile
Sterile reservoirs are used in cell culture, clinical workflows, and any application requiring aseptic handling. Non-sterile versions are sufficient for PCR, ELISA, and most routine molecular biology tasks.
Single-use vs reusable
Disposable reservoirs reduce contamination risk and simplify workflow changes between reagents. Reusable polypropylene reservoirs are preferred in high-throughput labs that repeatedly use the same reagents and want to reduce consumable cost.
Automation compatibility
For robotic systems, reservoirs must match SBS/ANSI footprint standards and be compatible with liquid handling platforms like Hamilton, Tecan, Beckman, or Agilent. Low-profile designs help ensure proper clearance for automated pipetting heads.

Automation Consumables

What Are Automation Consumables?

Automation consumables are plasticware items engineered to the tight tolerances required for consistent, unattended operation on robotic liquid-handling systems. Unlike manual-use consumables, automation consumables require tighter moulding tolerances, consistent tip-collar geometry for reproducible robotic tip pick-up and ejection, and barcode compatibility for LIMS-integrated workflows. Automation consumables are not interchangeable with manual-use plasticware — tip geometry and dimensional tolerance requirements differ, and substituting manual tips in robotic tip seats causes pick-up failures and run aborts.

Instrument-Specific vs Universal Robotic Tips Robotic pipette tips are typically instrument-specific: Hamilton STAR uses Hamilton CO-RE tips; Tecan Freedom EVO uses Tecan Te-PS tips; Beckman Coulter Biomek uses Beckman-specific tips. Third-party compatible robotic tips from Nest Scientific and equivalent manufacturers provide equivalent dimensional tolerances at lower cost and are certified DNase/RNase-free. Conductive robotic tips (carbon-doped polypropylene) are required on instruments using capacitive liquid-level detection (Hamilton CO-RE cLLD, Tecan cLLD) to confirm tip immersion depth. Deep-Well Plates Standard automation deep-well plates are 96-well, 2 mL per well (round- or square-bottom) in polypropylene, ANSI/SLAS footprint, with a fully skirted base for robotic gripper handling. Square-well formats maximise working volume and are preferred for DNA/RNA extraction automation. Round-bottom wells facilitate pipette tip access to the well base and pellet resuspension. Reagent Reservoir Plates Reagent reservoirs supply bulk reagent to the robotic arm in a format sized for 8-channel, 12-channel, or 96-channel head aspirations. Single-well troughs (290 mL) supply volumes for large-scale reagent additions. 12-channel troughs (22 mL per channel) and 8-channel troughs (32 mL) allow different reagents in adjacent channels for parallel dispensing. Confirm reservoir dead volume against your platform's minimum aspiration height specification. Sealing Mats Pierceable aluminium foil seals protect samples during processing and allow robotic needle or tip-based piercing for closed-tube aspiration. Silicone sealing mats provide resealable access to individual wells for sequential robotic access without contamination of adjacent wells.

Specifications Context

Automation consumables from Nest Scientific conform to ANSI/SLAS 1-4:2004 footprint and well-position standards. Conductive robotic tips use carbon-doped polypropylene with surface resistivity in the 10²–10⁶ Ω range for reliable capacitive liquid-level detection. All Nest Scientific automation consumables are certified DNase-free, RNase-free, non-pyrogenic, and endotoxin-free under ISO-certified cleanroom production. Hamilton STAR, Tecan Freedom EVO, Beckman Coulter Biomek i-Series, and PerkinElmer JANUS remain the dominant liquid handling automation platforms in North American research labs.

Centrifuge Tubes

What Are Centrifuge Tubes?

Centrifuge tubes are cylindrical laboratory containers with caps that are used to separate, pellet, and store biological or chemical samples through centrifugal force. They are commonly made from polypropylene (PP) or polystyrene (PS) and are available in sizes ranging from small 0.5 mL microtubes to larger 50 mL conical tubes. These tubes are widely used for cell pelleting, protein precipitation, DNA and RNA extraction, tissue homogenate clarification, and long-term sample storage. Depending on the material, they can withstand temperatures from −80 °C to +121 °C.
In short, the best centrifuge tube depends on your centrifuge rotor, required g-force, sample volume, and sterility needs.

Select a tube size that matches both your sample volume and centrifuge rotor. Microtubes ranging from 0.5–2 mL are commonly used in microcentrifuges and can typically handle speeds up to 20,000 × g. Midi tubes in the 5–10 mL range are suitable for intermediate sample volumes, while 15 mL and 50 mL conical tubes are commonly used in clinical, research, and preparative centrifuges.
Material: Polypropylene vs. Polystyrene
Polypropylene (PP) tubes offer excellent chemical resistance and can tolerate temperatures from −80 °C to +121 °C. They are suitable for autoclaving and exposure to many laboratory solvents. Polystyrene (PS) tubes provide superior optical clarity, making it easier to visually inspect samples and liquid levels, but they have lower resistance to solvents and extreme temperatures.
Sterility and Contamination Control
Sterile centrifuge tubes are typically gamma- or E-beam-irradiated and certified free of RNase, DNase, and pyrogens. These tubes are recommended for RNA extraction, cell culture, and clinical applications where contamination must be minimized. Non-sterile tubes may still be RNase- and DNase-free and are often suitable for routine DNA work and general sample storage.
Cap Design
Attached screw caps help prevent cap mix-ups and sample contamination, especially in high-throughput laboratories. Separate caps can be quicker to open and may be preferred in workflows that require frequent access to samples. If tubes will be used with automated systems, cap dimensions should be verified for compatibility with liquid handling equipment.
Packaging Options
Racked tubes provide convenient organization and allow direct pipetting while the tubes remain in the rack. Bulk-bagged tubes offer a more economical option for laboratories that process large volumes of samples and already have tube storage systems in place.

Comparing Common Centrifuge Tube Types

Microtubes (0.5–2 mL) are ideal for PCR preparation, microcentrifuge applications, and storage of small sample volumes. They can generally withstand centrifugal forces up to 20,000 × g.
Midi tubes (5–10 mL) are designed for intermediate sample volumes such as culture supernatants and can typically tolerate forces up to 16,000 × g.
Sterile 15 mL conical tubes are frequently used for cell pelleting, RNA extraction, and clinical sample processing, with typical ratings between 12,000 and 15,000 × g.
Sterile 50 mL conical tubes are commonly selected for larger-volume applications including tissue culture work, density gradient preparation, and large-scale sample processing.
Polystyrene conical tubes in 15 mL and 50 mL formats are often chosen when visual sample inspection is important and solvent exposure is minimal.

Specifications and Features

Polypropylene centrifuge tubes from Globe Scientific and Nest Scientific are manufactured from USP Class VI virgin resin and do not contain plasticizers or processing additives. Sterile products are typically irradiated to achieve a sterility assurance level (SAL) of 10⁻⁶. Most 15 mL tubes feature graduation marks at 1 mL intervals, while 50 mL tubes are usually graduated every 5 mL. MBP offers both bagged and racked centrifuge tube formats, including 15 mL and 50 mL conical tubes as well as smaller microtube and midi tube options.

How to Choose From All Centrifuge Tube Formats

Volume and Rotor Compatibility
Selecting the correct tube size is essential for safe and efficient centrifugation. Microtubes ranging from 0.5–2 mL are designed for microcentrifuges, while 5–10 mL midi tubes fit compatible benchtop centrifuge rotors. Larger 15 mL and 50 mL conical tubes are commonly used in clinical and research centrifuges. Always verify rotor compatibility before introducing a new tube format into your workflow.
Sterility Requirements
For sensitive applications such as RNA extraction, cell culture, and clinical diagnostics, sterile tubes certified free of RNase, DNase, and pyrogens are recommended. Non-sterile tubes can provide a cost-effective solution for routine DNA analysis, protein assays, and general sample storage where sterility is not critical.
Material Selection
Polypropylene tubes offer excellent durability, can be autoclaved at 121 °C, and resist many laboratory chemicals and solvents. Polystyrene tubes provide superior transparency, making it easier to monitor liquid levels and sample contents, although they are less resistant to heat and solvents.
Packaging and Inventory Planning
Microtubes are commonly available in pack sizes ranging from 500 to 1,000 units, while 15 mL and 50 mL conical tubes are often supplied in cases of 500. Laboratories with consistent usage may benefit from establishing recurring purchase orders to ensure uninterrupted supply.

All Centrifuge Tubes

What Are 15 mL and 50 mL Centrifuge Tubes?

15 mL and 50 mL centrifuge tubes are conical-bottom vessels in polypropylene (PP) or polystyrene (PS), the two most commonly used tube formats in research and clinical laboratories worldwide. The 15 mL tube is the standard for cell pelleting, RNA isolation, small-scale protein purification, and clinical sample preparation. The 50 mL tube handles larger culture volumes, gradient preparation, tissue homogenate clarification, and bulk precipitation steps. Both formats from Globe Scientific and Nest Scientific are rated to 12,000–15,000 × g in a supported rotor.
15 mL for cell and molecular workflows under 12 mL; 50 mL for culture volumes, gradients, and any prep where a 15 mL conical runs out of headroom.

How to Choose 15 mL and 50 mL Centrifuge Tubes

Material: PP vs PS
Polypropylene tubes (Globe Scientific, Nest Scientific) are resistant to most organic solvents, stable from −80 °C to +121 °C, and autoclavable. Polystyrene tubes offer greater optical clarity — the tube wall is transparent enough to read the sample meniscus and assess pellet quality without removing the tube from the rack. Choose PS when visual inspection is a workflow step; choose PP for all other applications.
Sterility Grade
Sterile tubes (gamma- or E-beam-irradiated, RNase-free, DNase-free, non-pyrogenic) are required for RNA work, primary cell culture, and clinical sample handling. Non-sterile, DNase/RNase-free tubes are appropriate and more cost-effective for DNA extractions, protein assays, and general preparative spins.
Cap Style: Flat-Top vs Plug-Seal
Flat-top screw caps (high-density polyethylene, HDPE) provide a flat writing surface for sample labeling and a double-threaded design that reduces cross-threading in high-throughput workflows. Plug-seal screw caps (HDPE or PP) create a secondary internal seal for leak-prone applications. Attached caps come pre-assembled on sterile tubes; separate caps are standard on non-sterile tubes.
Pack Format: Racked vs Bagged
Racked tubes (foam or PS rack, 50 × 15 mL or 25 × 50 mL per rack, 500 per case) allow direct pipetting without removing tubes and enable viewing of graduations without disturbing the rack. Bagged tubes (25 or 50 per bag, 500 per case) offer a lower cost per tube and suit labs with robotic liquid handlers or in-house racking systems.

BioFactory Accessories

What are Accessories for NEST BioFactory™ Systems?

NEST BioFactory™ accessories are the replacement caps, silicone tubing, vent filters, overcaps, and pre-assembled closed-system cap assemblies used to configure BioFactory units for closed aseptic liquid transfer, gas exchange management, and multi-unit serial connections in cGMP and research-scale bioprocess workflows. The accessory set enables the BioFactory narrow-mouth cap to function as a closed-system liquid transfer port — media, wash buffer, trypsin, and cell harvest supernatant are transferred in and out through the silicone tubing connection without opening the vessel. Accessories for the BioFactory are required when operating the BioFactory as a closed system; for simple open-pour workflows using wide-mouth caps, standard vent and plug seal caps are the only accessories needed.

Key BioFactory Accessory Categories

BioFactory Cap with Silicone Tube (CPC or Luer Connector) The BioFactory cap with silicone tube is the primary closed-transfer accessory: an adaptor cap that fits the narrow-mouth port of the BioFactory unit, pre-assembled with 80 cm of silicone tubing and a terminal connector — either a male CPC (clamped pressure connector / quick-connect) or a standard Luer lock — for coupling to peristaltic pumps, other BioFactory units, centrifuge tubes, or PETG media bottle assemblies. Two tubing I.D. × O.D. configurations are available: 1/4" I.D. × 3/8" O.D. and 3/8" I.D. × 5/8" O.D., covering standard peristaltic pump head bore sizes. The female sealing cap included with each assembly caps the connector between uses, maintaining sterility. Overcaps: Vented and Solid Overcaps are secondary dust and contamination barriers placed directly on top of the BioFactory adaptor caps during culture incubation. The vented overcap contains a 0.22 µm hydrophobic breathable membrane, allowing gas exchange through the cap stack while blocking particles and microbial contamination — used during active shaker or orbital incubation when the unit's primary cap is an adaptor cap rather than a vented cap. The solid overcap provides an additional dust and contamination seal with no gas exchange — used for short-term storage or transport outside the incubator. SPT-50 Silicone Hose SPT-50 silicone hose (3/8" I.D. × 5/8" O.D., 50 inches / 15 meters) is the bulk tubing used to connect multiple BioFactory units in series, connect BioFactory ports to peristaltic pump heads, or extend the reach of the transfer cap assembly. SPT-50 tubing is manufactured from silicone, is individually wrapped and sterile, and passes dissolution testing per BPOG (BioPhorum Operations Group) criteria per NEST product documentation, supporting its use in biopharmaceutical production environments. Premium Accessory Package NEST offers a BioFactory Accessory Premium Package that includes 2 different adaptor caps, 1 hose clamp, 1 adaptor connector, 1 vent filter (50 mm), 1 additional hose clamp, and 15 m of SPT-50 silicone hose — all individually wrapped and sterile in a single kit. This package provides all components needed to set up a closed-system BioFactory media management workflow from a single kit, reducing the number of individual part orders required. Vent Filters for Gas Exchange Management For BioFactory units using adaptor caps rather than standard vented caps, 50 mm inline vent filters (0.22 µm hydrophobic PTFE membrane) are installed on the air inlet/outlet tubing line to maintain sterile gas exchange during media addition, harvest, and incubation. The vent filter is rated for high flow rates without creating excessive back-pressure that would resist liquid movement through the system. Compatibility: Narrow-Mouth BioFactory Units Only All BioFactory accessory caps and tubing assemblies are designed exclusively for the narrow-mouth BioFactory configuration. Wide-mouth BioFactory units use standard wide-mouth vent and plug seal caps only; they are not compatible with accessory cap assemblies. Confirm that your BioFactory units have narrow-mouth ports before ordering the accessory cap set.

Specifications Context

NEST BioFactory™ accessory silicone tubing and cap assemblies are manufactured from USP Class VI silicone (TPE/silicone) and polycarbonate or PP cap bodies, individually wrapped and sterile. All components have passed dissolution testing per BPOG dissolution test criteria conducted by a certified third-party laboratory per NEST Scientific documentation. The standard Luer head connections conform to ISO 594 / GB/T 1962 for reliable compatibility with standard laboratory fittings. Vent filters use a 0.22 µm hydrophobic PTFE membrane; overcaps use a 0.22 µm hydrophobic membrane. NEST BioFactory accessories are carried by MBP alongside BioFactory units.
