Storage Boxes & Racks

What Are Laboratory Storage Boxes and Racks?

Laboratory storage boxes and racks are essential organizational systems used to store, organize, and protect cryogenic vials, microcentrifuge tubes, centrifuge tubes, and microscope slides across freezers, cold rooms, and benchtop environments. Storage boxes are typically lidded, grid-based containers used for long-term sample organization in ultra-low temperature conditions, while racks are open-frame supports used for active handling during laboratory workflows such as pipetting, vortexing, and reaction setup.
Cryogenic storage boxes are commonly designed to hold 81 vials (9×9 format) or 100 vials (10×10 format), and are compatible with storage conditions ranging from –196 °C in liquid nitrogen vapor phase to +121 °C for autoclave sterilization (depending on material). Tube racks, on the other hand, provide stable upright positioning of tubes during active benchwork and are not primarily intended for long-term freezer storage.

How to Choose Storage Boxes and Racks

Vial Format and Capacity
The first selection criterion is compatibility with tube size and grid layout. The most common format is the 81-place (9×9) box designed for 1.0–2.0 mL cryovials. Smaller or specialized formats may accommodate 5 mL tubes or different vial diameters depending on grid spacing. Proper matching ensures secure fit, easy retrieval, and consistent sample organization in high-density storage systems.
Temperature Range
Material selection determines allowable storage conditions. Polycarbonate cryogenic boxes are the most versatile, supporting temperatures from liquid nitrogen levels (–196 °C) through –80 °C freezer storage and up to autoclave sterilization at +121 °C. Cardboard freezer boxes with moisture-resistant coating are designed for economical freezer storage and can withstand ultra-low temperatures, but they are not suitable for autoclaving or long-term moisture exposure.
Tube Rack Materials and Use
Polypropylene racks are widely used because they are autoclavable and chemically resistant, making them suitable for sterile workflows. ABS and polystyrene racks provide lower-cost alternatives for general laboratory bench use but are not designed for autoclave conditions. For freezer organization, stainless steel racks are often used to hold multiple cryoboxes within –80 °C upright freezer systems, improving accessibility and spatial organization.
Slide Storage Boxes
Microscope slide storage boxes are designed to protect standard 25 × 75 mm slides. They are available in 25-, 50-, and 100-slide capacities. Polypropylene versions are autoclavable and suitable for sterilized workflows, while fiberboard or ABS versions are typically used for room-temperature archival storage and transport.
Color Coding and Sample Identification
Color-coded storage boxes are widely used in biobanking and high-throughput laboratories to quickly differentiate sample groups without opening boxes or reading labels at freezer temperatures. Common systems include multiple lid colors paired with alphanumeric grids inside the box, enabling precise sample tracking and retrieval in large inventories.

Specifications Context

Modern polycarbonate cryogenic storage boxes are engineered for extreme temperature stability, typically rated from –196 °C to +121 °C, allowing use across liquid nitrogen vapor phase storage, –80 °C freezers, and autoclave sterilization cycles. Cardboard freezer boxes are coated to resist moisture ingress and are optimized for cost-efficient high-density storage in ultra-low temperature environments.
The 81-place (9×9 grid) polycarbonate cryobox remains the standard format in most biorepositories and clinical research facilities due to its compatibility with SBS footprint freezer systems and automated inventory tracking workflows. These systems are widely used in genomics, cell banking, and pharmaceutical research environments.

Filtered Pipette Tips

What Are Filtered Pipette Tips?

Filtered pipette tips contain a hydrophobic aerosol-barrier plug — polyethylene (PE) frit or cellulose — embedded inside the tip body, positioned to intercept aerosol and liquid that would otherwise travel up through the tip collar into the pipette barrel during dispensing or when handling volatile or splashing samples. The filter protects the pipette barrel from internal contamination (which requires costly professional decontamination) and protects samples from cross-contamination by previously deposited nucleic acids, proteins, or biohazardous material in the barrel. Filtered tips are the standard consumables for PCR and qPCR setup, RNA extraction, cDNA synthesis, working with radioactive or biohazardous agents, and any workflow where a single contaminated barrel could compromise a run or an experiment. Non-filtered tips remain appropriate for routine buffer, media, and reagent dispensing where cross-contamination through the barrel is not a concern. Use filtered tips for all nucleic acid work, PCR, and biohazardous samples; use standard tips for routine buffer and reagent dispensing.

How to Choose Filtered Pipette Tips

Filter Material: Polyethylene Frit vs Cellulose Hydrophobic PE frits are the most common and most studied aerosol-barrier material; they block liquid ingress reliably without absorbing sample material or releasing fibres. Cellulose filters are used in some barrier tips (including the original Thermo Barrier tips); they are effective aerosol barriers but can absorb a small volume of aqueous sample, relevant at ≤10 µL, where the absorbed volume is proportionally significant.
Universal Fit vs LTS-Compatible Filtered Tips Universal filtered tips use standard collar geometry (3.8 mm for ≤10 µL, 6.1 mm for ≤200 µL) and fit Eppendorf, Rainin Classic (non-LTS), and Thermo pipettes. LTS-compatible filtered tips use Rainin's cylindrical LTS mounting geometry and are required for Rainin LTS pipettes.
Low-Retention Filtered Tips Low-retention filtered tips combine an aerosol barrier with a hydrophobic inner tip wall, reducing liquid adhesion during dispensing. They are recommended for small-volume (≤10 µL) nucleic acid work, RNA, protein, and enzyme dispensing, where both contamination protection and volume accuracy are critical.
Volume Range Filtered tips are available across 10 µL (P2–P10), 20 µL (P20), 100 µL (P100), 200 µL (P200), 300 µL, 1,000 µL (P1000), and 1,250 µL extended formats. Extended-length filtered tips reach deep into 15 mL and 50 mL conical tubes for nucleic acid elution and sample transfer steps.
Packaging Filtered tips are typically sterile-racked (96/rack, 10 racks/box); reload/refill formats are available for high-volume filter tip users.

How to Choose Media Storage Bottles

Material: PC vs. PET vs. PETG PC (polycarbonate) bottles are window-clear, shatter-proof, and rated for repeated autoclaving (up to 5–10 cycles) — the standard for labs that prepare and sterilize media in-house. PC is resistant to alcohols, weak acids, and aliphatic hydrocarbons; it is not compatible with strong bases or organic solvents. PC contains BPA (bisphenol A) by its monomer chemistry and is not recommended for long-term hormone-sensitive cell culture applications. PET bottles are optically clear, lighter than glass, non-cytotoxic, and non-autoclavable, rated from −60 °C to +60 °C. They are the cost-effective standard for single-use media and sera storage in non-autoclave workflows. PETG (glycol-modified PET) adds a glycol co-monomer that reduces crystallinity, improving impact resistance, low-temperature stability to −80 °C, and flexibility. PETG is the preferred material for long-term storage of pH-sensitive liquids, protein/vaccine intermediates, and applications requiring closed-system accessory assemblies. Round vs. Square Bottles Round bottles (Boston round, GL45 thread) are compatible with standard bottle-top vacuum filtration systems (Millipore Stericup, Corning Costar) and are the format of choice for media vacuum-filtered in-house. Square bottles conserve refrigerator and cold room shelf space due to their flat sides and stackable design, reducing storage footprint by approximately 25% versus equivalent-volume round bottles. NEST Scientific PET and PETG square media bottles feature molded graduations and a white labeling area on two sides. Volume Range Standard media bottle volumes are 60 mL, 125 mL, 250 mL, 500 mL, and 1,000 mL, corresponding to common media and sera kit sizes. A 250 mL bottle accommodates a standard 250 mL media aliquot; a 500 mL bottle holds standard FBS lots or 500 mL media packs. Confirm that the bottle's nominal volume includes 15% additional headspace for mixing, thawing expansion, and transfer operations. Accessory Assembly vs. Standard Cap Standard PETG square media bottles ship with an HDPE screw cap — suitable for storage and manual transfer. PETG bottles with accessory caps (bi-directional transfer cap + TPE tubing + Luer lock or CPC connector, NEST catalog 3525xx series) create a fully closed aseptic liquid transfer system — used in cGMP environments, bioprocess research, and any workflow where open-pour media transfer creates contamination or regulatory risk. Sterility and Certifications For cell culture use, all media storage bottles must be certified DNase/RNase-free, non-pyrogenic (endotoxin-free), and non-cytotoxic. NEST Scientific PET and PETG media bottles meet USP Class VI and ISO 10993 biocompatibility requirements, are manufactured in ISO 8 cleanrooms, and are gamma or E-beam-sterilized. PC bottles from autoclave-capable suppliers use virgin Lexan® PC resin compliant with USP Class VI.

Specifications Context

NEST Scientific square PET media bottles (catalog 334xxx) and PETG media bottles (catalog 352xxx) are manufactured from 100% virgin material in ISO 8 cleanrooms. Both materials meet USP Class VI and ISO 10993 biocompatibility requirements. Bottles are gamma irradiated in the USA or E-beam sterilized to SAL 10⁻⁶; each lot is certified DNase/RNase-free, pyrogen-free, and endotoxin-free. PETG bottles feature molded graduations (not printed), smooth inner surface to minimize residue on the wall, a one-shot-molded cap seat (no inner gasket required), and a double-bagged sterile packaging format meeting GMP purification workshop material-entry requirements. NEST Scientific PET and PETG media bottles are stocked by MBP in sizes from 60 mL to 1,000 mL.

What are PC Media Bottles?

PC (polycarbonate) media storage bottles are reusable, autoclavable, highly transparent plastic containers used to prepare, sterilize, store, and dispense tissue culture media, sera, buffers, and other aqueous solutions. Polycarbonate — a rigid aromatic polyester with carbonate linkages — is the strongest standard thermoplastic, rated for use from −135 °C to +135 °C, making it suitable for ultra-low freezer storage through repeated autoclave sterilization at 121 °C. PC is window-clear, virtually shatterproof compared to glass, and dimensionally stable after autoclaving when not placed under vacuum stress. PC media bottles are the correct choice for any in-house media or buffer preparation workflow requiring autoclave sterilization, where cost amortization across multiple autoclave cycles justifies the higher per-bottle price versus single-use PET/PETG.

How to Choose PC Media Bottles

Number of Autoclave Cycles Standard PC lab bottles withstand 5–10 autoclave cycles at 121 °C before mechanical strength begins to degrade, and discoloration may appear. Nalgene polycarbonate bottles (USP Class VI virgin resin, Thermo Fisher) are rated for use up to the manufacturer's cycle guidance. Each autoclave cycle causes mild hydrolytic attack on carbonate linkages — do not use PC bottles for vacuum applications after they have been autoclaved, as mechanical strength reduction raises implosion risk. BPA Consideration Polycarbonate contains bisphenol A (BPA) as a consequence of its carbonate-monomer chemistry. Trace BPA can leach from PC surfaces into aqueous solutions, particularly at elevated temperatures (autoclaving, warm media). For applications using estrogen receptor–positive cell lines (MCF-7, T47D), primary endocrine cells, or embryonic stem cells, BPA-free alternatives (PET or PETG) are the safer choice. For standard media preparation and non-hormone-sensitive applications, the trace BPA levels in USP Class VI PC do not affect results. Chemical Compatibility PC resists weak acids, alcohols (ethanol up to 70%), and aliphatic hydrocarbons. PC is not compatible with strong bases (NaOH, KOH), organic solvents (acetone, DMSO at high concentration), concentrated acids, or hydrolytic conditions at elevated pH — all rapidly degrade carbonate linkages, causing crazing, cracking, or failure. Never autoclave PC with alkaline or oxidizing cleaning agents. For compatibility questions, consult the manufacturer's chemical resistance guide. Round (GL45) vs. Square Format PC round bottles (Boston round profile, GL45 threaded neck) are the dominant format for media preparation because they directly accept bottle-top vacuum filtration assemblies (Millipore Stericup, Corning) and are compatible with GL45 lids and pouring rings. PC square bottles conserve refrigerator shelf space and are preferred for cold-storage media archiving. Confirm whether your bottle-top filter threading matches GL45, 38-430, or 45-400 before ordering round bottles. Volume and Headspace PC media bottles are available from 125 mL to 10 L. Standard cell culture volumes — 125 mL, 250 mL, 500 mL, 1,000 mL — correspond to common media kit sizes. Each bottle nominally includes 15% additional headspace for autoclaving thermal expansion (liquid expands ~4% on autoclave heating) and safe pouring; never fill above the marked maximum fill line before autoclaving.

Specifications Context

Nalgene polycarbonate bottles are manufactured from USP Class VI laboratory-grade PC resin compliant with USP and ASTM biocompatibility testing, EP monographs, EU food-contact directives, CONEG, and RoHS requirements. Temperature use range: −135 °C to +135 °C; autoclavable at 121 °C per cycle guidance. Mechanical properties: PC has a tensile strength of approximately 55–75 MPa and impact resistance that remains >50 J/m at −40 °C, making it effectively shatterproof under typical lab handling. After autoclaving, PC retains clarity but loses some tensile strength with each cycle — monitor for crazing, discoloration, or cracks that indicate end-of-service-life. As of 2026, MBP carries PC media bottles suitable for autoclave-based media preparation workflows.

What are PET Media Bottles?

PET (polyethylene terephthalate) media storage bottles are single-use, sterile, optically clear plastic containers for storing tissue culture media, fetal bovine serum, PBS, HBSS, trypsin-EDTA, and other aqueous laboratory solutions. PET is manufactured by an injection stretch-blow molding (ISBM) process that produces glass-like optical clarity, low gas permeability (especially to CO₂ and O₂ compared to polystyrene), excellent mechanical strength, and a smooth inner surface that minimizes liquid residue. PET bottles are BPA-free, non-autoclavable, and rated for use from −60 °C to +60 °C.
They are the dominant single-use format for media and sera storage in cell culture because of their glass-comparable clarity, low extractable profile, and cost-effectiveness compared to borosilicate glass. Choose PET media bottles as the default single-use format for ready-to-use media and sera storage, cold room archiving, and any application where autoclaving is not required.

Square PET media bottles (NEST Scientific catalog 334xxx) feature flat sides that stack efficiently in refrigerators and cold rooms, reducing footprint by approximately 25% versus round bottles and preventing rolling when stored horizontally. NEST PET square bottles have molded graduations (not printed), a white labeling area on two sides, and embossed markings for durable identification. Volume Selection PET media bottles are available in 30 mL, 60 mL, 125 mL, 250 mL, 500 mL, and 1,000 mL volumes. A 500 mL bottle accommodates a standard 500 mL aliquot of cell culture media (DMEM, RPMI, MEM) or a standard FBS lot aliquot. The 1,000 mL bottle holds a full 1 L media preparation. Each bottle includes approximately 15% additional headspace above the nominal volume for thawing expansion (−20 °C frozen FBS thaw) and transfer convenience. Cap Material NEST Scientific PET media bottle caps are made from HDPE (high-density polyethylene), free of heavy metals per regulatory testing. The cap is designed through a one-shot mold process without an inner gasket, fitting securely onto the bottle neck with enhanced sealing performance — an important feature for leak-proof horizontal storage and air transport. Gas Barrier Properties PET and PETG both reduce gas permeability to CO₂ and O₂ compared to polystyrene, maintaining medium pH and preventing dissolved gas equilibration during storage. For pH-sensitive media containing bicarbonate buffers, PET and PETG are materially superior to polystyrene bottles, which allow CO₂ outgassing and pH shift during storage at room temperature or 4 °C. Sterility and Lot Traceability NEST Scientific PET media bottles are gamma irradiated or E-beam sterilized; each lot is certified DNase/RNase-free, human DNA-free, pyrogen-free, and non-cytotoxic per lot certificate. Lot numbers are printed on each bottle and packaging for traceability. Shelf life is 3 years from the production month per NEST lot release data. PET bottles meet FDA requirements for materials used in contact with sterile liquid pharmaceuticals.

Specifications Context

Petri Dishes

What Are Laboratory Petri Dishes?

A petri dish is a shallow, circular, flat-bottomed lidded container used for culturing microorganisms such as bacteria and fungi on solid agar-based growth media. The standard laboratory format is 90 mm diameter × 15 mm depth, which provides an optimal surface area for colony isolation, enumeration, and antimicrobial testing. First introduced by Julius Richard Petri in 1887, the petri dish remains one of the most essential tools in microbiology for applications such as streak-plate isolation, colony-forming unit (CFU) counting, antimicrobial susceptibility testing (Kirby-Bauer method), environmental monitoring, and general microbial identification. Disposable polystyrene petri dishes are manufactured under cleanroom conditions, gamma sterilized (SAL 10⁻⁶), and produced as DNase/RNase-free consumables for contamination-sensitive workflows. Polystyrene dishes should not be autoclaved, as high heat can deform the material; reusable glass dishes are used when heat sterilization or chemical resistance is required.

How to Choose Petri Dishes

Size
The 90 mm petri dish is the global standard used in most clinical and research laboratories because it fits standard incubator racks and supports typical agar volumes of 15–20 mL. Smaller 60 mm dishes are used for teaching exercises, limited sample volumes, or cost-efficient plating, while larger 150 mm dishes provide increased surface area for dense cultures, slow-growing organisms, or specialized susceptibility testing applications.
Lid: Vented vs. Non-Vented
Vented lids allow controlled gas exchange, helping maintain aerobic conditions and reduce condensation buildup during incubation. Non-vented lids are used when a sealed environment is required, such as in anaerobic systems, transport conditions, or moisture-sensitive applications where evaporation must be minimized.
Material
Polystyrene (PS) is the most commonly used material for disposable microbiology petri dishes due to its clarity, low cost, and consistent manufacturing quality. Polypropylene (PP) dishes offer higher heat resistance and can withstand autoclave conditions, but they are less optically clear. Borosilicate glass petri dishes are reusable, chemically resistant, and suitable for workflows requiring repeated sterilization or harsh chemical exposure.
Surface Treatment
Non-treated polystyrene dishes are used for standard bacterial and fungal culture. Tissue culture (TC)-treated dishes have a surface modification that promotes cell attachment and are intended for mammalian cell culture applications, not routine microbiology work. Selecting the correct surface treatment ensures accurate microbial growth and prevents unnecessary cost.

Specifications Context

Modern laboratory petri dishes are manufactured from high-grade virgin polystyrene under controlled cleanroom conditions to ensure consistency in agar surface quality and colony morphology. Stacking rings on the dish base allow airflow and thermal equilibration during incubation. In standardized microbiology methods such as CLSI, EUCAST, and AOAC protocols, 90 mm petri dishes are the preferred format for CFU counting and antimicrobial susceptibility testing. A typical agar volume of 15–20 mL per 90 mm plate ensures consistent depth and reliable diffusion characteristics for microbiological assays. Together, petri dishes, inoculating loops, and culture media form the foundation of routine bacterial culture workflows in clinical and research laboratories.

Pipette Tips

What Are Pipette Tips?

Pipette tips are disposable polypropylene cones that attach to the shaft of an air-displacement pipette, forming the liquid-contact surface for aspiration and dispensing. The seal between the tip collar and the pipette shaft is the single most important factor in volumetric accuracy; a poorly fitting tip introduces systematic volume error that causes the instrument to deviate from its calibrated specification. Tips span micro volumes (0.1–10 µL) through standard (20–200 µL and 100–1,000 µL) to high-volume (up to 1,250 µL), with variants for filtered aerosol protection, low-retention liquid release, extended reach into deep vessels, and wide-bore dispensing of viscous samples.

How to Choose Pipette Tips

Collar Size and Pipette Compatibility Tip collar diameter determines fit: 3.8 mm collar for ≤10 µL pipettes; 6.1 mm collar for ≤200 µL; approximately 7.5–8.0 mm collar for P1000 pipettes. Universal fit tips use these standard collar sizes and are compatible with Eppendorf Research, Rainin Classic (non-LTS), Thermo Finnpipette, and Sartorius/BioHit. Rainin LTS and Eppendorf epT.I.P.S. use proprietary collar geometry and require instrument-specific tips. Filtered vs Non-Filtered Aerosol-barrier filter tips contain a hydrophobic PE or cellulose plug that blocks aerosol and liquid from reaching the pipette barrel; required for PCR, qPCR, and RT-PCR setup, RNA extraction, and work with biohazardous samples. Non-filter standard tips are appropriate for buffer, media, and reagent dispensing where cross-contamination through the barrel is not a concern. Low-Retention vs Standard Polypropylene Low-retention tips are injection-moulded from hydrophobic polypropylene with reduced surface energy or coated to minimise liquid adhesion on the inner wall. They improve accuracy at ≤10 µL and for dispensing viscous, protein-containing, or organic solvent samples. Standard PP tips leave small residual volumes in the tip after dispensing; this residue is negligible at 200 µL but significant at 2–5 µL. Extended-Length and Wide-Bore Extended-length tips (also called long tips or gel-loading tips) reach into deep 15 mL and 50 mL tubes, cryovials, and electrophoresis gel wells. Wide-bore tips have an enlarged aperture for dispensing viscous samples, cell suspensions, and tissue lysates without shearing. Packaging Format Hinged 96-tip racks are standard for manual pipetting. Reload inserts fit into reusable rack bases to reduce per-tip cost and plastic waste. Bulk bags provide the lowest cost per tip for non-sterile applications.

Specifications Context

Pipette tips are certified DNase-free, RNase-free, ATP-free, human DNA-free, PCR inhibitor-free, and pyrogen-free per independent lot testing. Virgin polypropylene free of additives, antistatic agents, and dyes is the standard material. ISO 8655 compliance for the pipette system depends on tip-pipette seal quality; confirm tip compatibility with your specific pipette model. Sorenson Bioscience universal and filtered tips, Globe Scientific, and Nest Scientific lines are stocked by MBP Inc.

What Are Universal Fit Pipette Tips?

Universal fit pipette tips use collar diameters standardised across most major air-displacement pipette brands, allowing a single tip product to seat on pipettes from multiple manufacturers. The three primary collar sizes are: 3.8 mm for ≤10 µL tips, 6.1 mm for ≤200 µL tips, and approximately 7.5–8.0 mm for P1000 tips. These collar sizes cover Eppendorf Research Plus, Rainin Classic (non-LTS), Thermo Finnpipette, Sartorius/BioHit, and VWR pipettes. Universal fit tips cover most lab pipettes at a lower cost per tip — the exception is Rainin LTS, which needs dedicated LTS tips.

How to Choose Universal Fit Pipette Tips

Volume Range: Match Tip to Pipette 10 µL universal tips (3.8 mm collar) cover 0.1–10 µL single-channel pipettes and the P10 range. 200 µL universal tips (6.1 mm collar) cover P20, P50, P100, and P200 pipettes. 1,000 µL universal tips cover P1000 pipettes and are available in standard-length and extended-length formats. 1,250 µL macro universal tips accommodate high-volume dispensing steps in the 1,000–1,250 µL range. Standard vs Filtered Universal Tips Standard universal tips are sufficient for buffer, media, and reagent dispensing. Filtered universal tips — with hydrophobic PE or cellulose aerosol barrier — are required for PCR setup, RNA work, and any contamination-sensitive application. Using filtered tips universally reduces contamination risk in shared pipettes at the cost of approximately 1.5–2× the price of standard tips. Low-Retention Universal Tips Low-retention universal tips minimise residual volume on the inner tip wall. This matters at ≤10 µL, where standard tips may retain 0.2–0.5 µL, creating a systematic under-delivery error. Sorenson's universal low-retention tips maintain compatibility with all major standard-collar pipettes. Packaging Format Racked (hinged 96-tip rack): standard for manual pipetting. Reload inserts: drop into reusable rack bases; 20–30% lower per-tip cost and reduced plastic. Bulk (non-sterile bag): lowest cost per tip for non-sterile buffer/media work. Sterile racked tips are required for cell culture, RNA, and clean applications. OneTouch / Ergonomic Formats OneTouch reload formats allow the full tip insert to be loaded into the pipette simultaneously, reducing repetitive-strain impact from individual tip-loading in high-throughput workflows.

Specifications Context

Universal fit tips are manufactured from 100% virgin polypropylene, certified DNase-free, RNase-free, ATP-free, human DNA-free, pyrogen-free, and PCR inhibitor-free per lot. Sorenson Bioscience universal tips are manufactured in a Class 100,000 cleanroom, pre-sterilised, and sold through MBP Inc. in standard racks, EcoRack reloads, and bulk formats. Universal fit tips remain the highest-volume tip category in North American research labs due to multi-brand compatibility and lower cost per tip versus pipette-specific variants.
If you’re setting up a workflow or mixing pipette brands in the same lab, it’s usually worth sorting tip compatibility early — it removes a lot of small daily friction that adds up over time. Contact the MBP team to get a tailored quote!

Universal Fit Pipette Tips

What Are Bulk & Racked Pipette Tips?

Racked pipette tips are pre-loaded into a 96-position hinged polypropylene rack (8 rows × 12 columns), matched to standard single-channel and 8-channel multichannel pipette workflows. Bulk tips are supplied as loose tips in resealable bags of 500–1,000 or more, intended for self-loading into existing rack frames or bulk-bag dispensers. For labs that discard full racks after each use, bulk bags offer a significant reduction in per-tip cost; for labs requiring sterile, pre-organised tips, hinged racks are the standard. Choose racked tips for sterile/organised workflows; choose bulk bags when sterility is not required and cost per tip is the primary driver.

How to Choose Between Bulk and Racked Formats

Sterility Requirements Racked tips are available pre-sterilised (EO or gamma) and are individually certified DNase-free, RNase-free, ATP-free, human DNA-free, and PCR inhibitor-free per lot — required for cell culture, PCR setup, RNA work, and any sterility-sensitive application. Bulk bag tips are typically non-sterile; they can be autoclaved by the user at 121°C (15 psi, 15 min) before use if sterility is needed, though autoclaving adds handling time. Throughput and Format Racked 96-tip formats support 8-channel multichannel pipetting with aligned well positions. Bulk bags are efficient for single-channel repetitive dispensing where tips are picked individually. For high-throughput multichannel workflows, the Refill Station (reload insert) format combines the alignment benefits of a rack with the lower cost of bulk supply. Volume Range 10 µL tips: for P2, P10 single-channel pipettes, microvolume dispensing, sequencing gel loading. 200 µL tips: the highest-volume format in most research labs — P20, P100, P200 range. 1,000 µL / 1,250 µL tips: for P1000 pipettes; available in standard and extended-length formats for deep-tube access. Standard-length tips suit standard Eppendorf and Falcon tubes; extended-length tips reach 15 mL and 50 mL conical tube bottoms. Autoclavable Racks Polypropylene hinged racks withstand repeated autoclave cycles at 121°C without dimensional distortion. Confirm the rack material is PP (not polystyrene) before autoclaving — PS racks deform under steam sterilisation. Pack Sizes and Case Economics Standard racked packs: 96 tips/rack × 10 racks/box × 10 boxes/case = 9,600 tips/case for 200 µL format. Bulk bags: 500 or 1,000 tips/bag; cases of 10 bags = 5,000–10,000 tips at significantly lower cost per tip.

Specifications Context

What Are Pipette Tip Refill Stations?

A pipette tip refill station consists of two components: a durable outer rack frame (typically polypropylene or polycarbonate) that holds tips at standard 9 mm well spacing, and disposable reload inserts — tip wafer trays pre-loaded with 96 tips — that drop into the frame to replace a depleted set. Once the insert is exhausted, the rack base is retained, and a new insert is loaded, rather than discarding the entire rack assembly. This system is designed for high-throughput labs that consume hundreds of racks per month; at that scale, the reduction in plastic waste (up to 60%) and per-tip cost (typically 15–30% lower than equivalent racked tips) is meaningful over a year. Reload inserts carry the same universal-fit collar geometry and purity certifications as standard hinged racks. Refill stations make economic and environmental sense when your lab replaces more than two full cases of racked tips per month.

How to Choose a Refill Station System

Rack Base Compatibility Reload inserts are designed to fit specific rack base models — they are not universally interchangeable. Confirm the rack base brand and model before ordering reload inserts; for example, Sorenson EcoRack reload inserts fit Sorenson EcoRack bases, USA Scientific LTS refill wafers fit USA Scientific racks, and Nest Scientific inserts fit Nest frames. MBP Inc. supplies matched rack bases and insert systems — contact the team if unsure which base fits your existing racks. Sterile vs Non-Sterile Inserts Sterile reload inserts (EO-sterilised or gamma-irradiated) are required for PCR setup, RNA work, cell culture, and any sterility-sensitive application. Non-sterile inserts are suitable for routine buffer, media, and reagent dispensing where the pipette and tip will not contact a sterile sample. Volume Range Refill inserts are available in the same volume range as racked tips: 10 µL, 200 µL, 300 µL (select formats), and 1,000–1,250 µL. Confirm that the same volume range is available for both the rack base and the reload insert from your supplier. Filter vs Non-Filter Inserts Filter reload inserts — with integrated aerosol-barrier elements — are available for labs requiring contamination protection in PCR or nucleic acid work. Non-filter reload inserts are the economical choice for routine liquid handling. OneTouch / Stacked Loading Systems Some refill formats (e.g., Rainin SpaceSaver, Sorenson EcoRack, Biotix reload) offer stacked magazine-style packaging where multiple inserts are stacked in a column; a fresh insert auto-advances when the previous is depleted, reducing tip-station restocking frequency in high-throughput workflows.

Specifications Context

Reload insert tips are manufactured from the same virgin polypropylene as standard racked tips, certified DNase-free, RNase-free, human DNA-free, ATP-free, and PCR inhibitor-free per lot. Rainin SpaceSaver inserts reduce plastic waste by up to 80% versus hinged racks using recyclable PETE packaging. Biotix uTIP reload inserts reduce plastic waste by 30%; Sorenson EcoRack inserts reduce waste by up to 60%. Sorenson Bioscience EcoRack reload inserts are stocked by MBP Inc. in 10 µL, 200 µL, and 1,250 µL volumes.

What Are LTS-Compatible Filter Tips?

LTS-compatible filter tips combine two design features: the cylindrical collar geometry of Rainin's LiteTouch System (LTS), which mates with Rainin LTS pipette shafts for low-insertion-force ergonomic operation, and an integrated hydrophobic aerosol-barrier filter element that prevents aerosol droplets and liquid from reaching the pipette barrel. They are the required tip format for Rainin LTS labs running PCR, qPCR, RT-PCR, RNA extraction, nucleic acid dispensing, or any contamination-sensitive workflow where both LTS ergonomics and aerosol protection are needed simultaneously. LTS filter tips are the single correct format for Rainin LTS users doing PCR, RNA, or biohazardous work — no substitution with universal filtered tips is possible.

How to Choose LTS-Compatible Filter Tips

Confirm LTS Instrument Only pipettes displaying 'LTS' in the model designation — Pipet-Lite XLS+ LTS, Pipet-Lite M LTS, L8 LTS, L12 LTS — accept LTS tips. Standard Rainin models (older PIPET-LITE without 'LTS') and all non-Rainin pipettes require universal-fit tips, not LTS-specific tips. Low-Retention Filter Tips for Small Volumes Low-retention LTS filter tips combine the LTS mount, aerosol barrier, and hydrophobic inner wall. Use them when dispensing ≤20 µL of RNA, enzyme, or protein solutions where maximum volume recovery plus contamination protection are simultaneously required — the most stringent tip specification for Rainin LTS users. Volume Range Common LTS filter tip volumes: 20 µL, 200 µL, 300 µL, 1,000 µL, and 1,200 µL. Confirm the exact volume range available in LTS-compatible filter format from your supplier, as not all volumes are available in every format from every manufacturer. OEM vs Third-Party Rainin OEM filter tips for LTS are specified to the tightest cylindrical geometry tolerance. LTS filter tips are available in sterile racked and refill stacked-box formats with RNase/DNase/non-pyrogenic certification. For routine research use, third-party LTS filter tips offer equivalent performance at 20–40% lower cost. Packaging LTS filter tips are available in hinged racks (10 racks × 96 = 960 tips/box) and refill stacked-box inserts. Sterile options are standard across the range.

Specifications Context

LTS-compatible filter tips are manufactured from virgin polypropylene (PP) with hydrophobic PE filter frits; low-retention variants use hydrophobic resin for reduced surface adhesion. LTS filter tips: certified RNase-free, DNase-free, non-pyrogenic, CE and FDA-listed, in sterile refill stacked-box format. Multiple third-party manufacturers supply LTS-compatible filter tips at 20–40% below Rainin OEM pricing, with equivalent documented performance for research workflows.
