Class A vs. Class B
Class A graduated cylinders conform to ASTM E1272 / ISO 4788 Class A tolerances &mdash; e.g., &plusmn;0.5 mL for a 100 mL cylinder, &plusmn;2.0 mL for a 1,000 mL cylinder. Class B tolerances are twice as wide as Class A. Class A cylinders are appropriate for protocols specifying cylinder-grade volume accuracy; Class B for routine lab measurements where tight tolerances are not required.
Single Scale vs. Dual Scale (mL/oz)
Single-scale cylinders are marked in mL only &mdash; cleaner graduation lines, easier to read, preferred for labs working exclusively in metric units. Dual-scale cylinders carry both mL and oz markings, useful in labs operating across metric and US customary units or for customer-facing applications requiring oz notation.
Autoclavable Glass vs. Plastic
Borosilicate glass graduated cylinders are autoclavable at 121&deg;C, resistant to all common lab reagents, and reusable indefinitely with careful handling. PP plastic cylinders are shatterproof and autoclavable at 121&deg;C but are not suitable for organic solvents or high heat above 135&deg;C.

Size Selection
MBP stocks Griffin style beakers from 10 mL to 5,000 mL. Common bench sizes include 50 mL and 100 mL for small-scale reactions and staining, 250 mL for routine buffer work, 1,000 mL for media or reagent preparation, and 2,000 mL for larger-volume batches. As a general guideline, beakers should be filled to no more than two-thirds of their nominal capacity when heating to allow for liquid expansion and prevent boil-over.
Graduation: Molded vs. Printed
Molded graduations are permanently embossed into the glass and are resistant to solvents, autoclaving, and repeated cleaning cycles. Printed dual-scale graduations provide higher contrast for quick bench reading but may fade over time with repeated autoclaving or exposure to aggressive solvents.
Borosilicate Glass

Common applications for amber storage include: ethidium bromide solutions, crystal violet stain, bilirubin calibrators, vitamin B2 (riboflavin) solutions, and other photosensitive reagents. Choose amber glass when the reagent specification or manufacturer's instructions recommend light protection. Wide-Mouth vs. Standard Neck Standard-neck media bottles are suited for liquid-to-liquid transfers and dispensing. Wide-mouth media bottles allow easier filling with solid powder media (agar, broth powder, salt), scooping viscous materials, and thorough cleaning &mdash; preferred for culture media preparation where media powder is dissolved directly in the bottle. Graduated vs. Non-Graduated Graduated media bottles have approximate volume markings for guidance during media preparation without a separate measuring cylinder. Markings are typically &plusmn;5% and are not certified for precision volumetric work. Cap and Pouring Ring PP screw caps are autoclavable at 121&deg;C. Loosen caps one quarter-turn before autoclaving to allow steam pressure equalisation.
