Transfer Pipettes

What are disposable transfer pipettes?

Disposable transfer pipettes are single-use plastic liquid-handling tools made from low-density polyethylene (LDPE). They are designed as a one-piece bulb-and-stem system used for transferring, dispensing, and handling small volumes of liquids in laboratory workflows.
They are commonly used as a safer and more convenient alternative to glass Pasteur pipettes. Being plastic and disposable, they eliminate the risk of breakage, reduce cross-contamination, and remove the need for separate rubber bulbs. The flexible bulb allows controlled aspiration and dispensing of reagents, samples, and solutions.

What you will find:

Graduated transfer pipettes – for approximate volume measurement and controlled dispensing

Non-graduated transfer pipettes – for simple liquid transfer without measurement markings

Fine-tip transfer pipettes – for small droplets and precise spot dispensing

Sterile transfer pipettes – for microbiology and contamination-sensitive workflows

Non-sterile transfer pipettes – for routine laboratory use

Disposable Pasteur pipettes – for general single-use liquid handling

How to choose transfer pipettes

Tip style Fine-tip pipettes are used for precise work such as microplate spotting and small-volume handling. Standard tips are suitable for general transfers, while wide-bore designs are better for viscous liquids or blood samples. Longer stems help access deep containers.
Capacity and volume handling Select pipettes based on typical working volumes. Smaller pipettes are suitable for low-volume transfers, while larger ones are used for routine sample handling. The effective draw volume depends on bulb capacity and usage technique.
Graduated vs non-graduated Graduated pipettes allow approximate volume estimation and are useful in clinical and diagnostic workflows. Non-graduated pipettes are intended for general dispensing where precise measurement is not required.
Sterility requirements Sterile pipettes are used in microbiology, cell culture, and clinical applications where contamination control is essential. Non-sterile versions are suitable for general laboratory and teaching use.
Length and accessibility Long pipettes are preferred for deep vessels such as flasks and bottles, while shorter designs are used for compact tubes and small workspaces.

Specifications context

Disposable LDPE transfer pipettes are widely used laboratory consumables for general-purpose liquid handling in research, clinical, and educational environments. They are available in sterile and non-sterile formats with multiple tip designs and capacities to support different workflows.
These pipettes remain a standard alternative to glass Pasteur pipettes due to their safety, low cost, and reduced contamination risk in routine laboratory applications.

Staining: Coplin Jars Coplin staining jars are vertical-slot containers that hold 5–10 slides facing outward, immersing them simultaneously in staining reagents — haematoxylin, eosin, Gram stains, silver stains, and alcohols. Glass Coplin jars are solvent-resistant for xylene and all laboratory alcohols; polypropylene versions are suitable for aqueous and mildly solvent-containing reagents but are not xylene-compatible. Transport: Slide Mailers Three mailer types address different transport needs. Flip-top plastic mailers are reusable for short-range intra-facility transport. Polypropylene mailers with red screw caps provide a leak-proof sealed closure for shipping biological specimens. Cardboard mailers offer a lower-cost option for non-biohazardous, short-distance lab-to-lab sharing. Bench Access: Slide Dispensers Slide dispensers hold up to 72 slides in a tilted stack, dispensing one slide at a time from the front with one-handed access. This prevents contamination from repeatedly handling the full slide stack and reduces breakage during high-volume staining sessions. Archiving: 20-Place File Holders and Cabinets Twenty-place slide file holders accommodate a single case's slides in a flat, portable format suitable for filing or transporting a patient case. Expandable slide storage cabinets provide modular drawer-based storage for collections that grow over time, holding 100–500+ slides per cabinet unit.

Material: Glass vs. Polypropylene vs. Polystyrene Borosilicate glass 3.3 (ASTM E438 Type I, Class B) test tubes withstand direct flame, autoclave sterilization at 121 °C, and most solvents, acids, and bases. They are reusable and autoclavable, making them cost-effective over high-volume laboratory runs. Polystyrene (PS) disposable tubes offer outstanding optical clarity for flow cytometry (FACS), cell counting, and OD-based colorimetric assays, but cannot be autoclaved and should not be used with aromatic solvents or strong acids. Polypropylene (PP) tubes are chemically resistant, autoclavable, and available with screw caps for anaerobic culture or gas-generating reactions. Rimmed vs. Rimless Rimless test tubes (fire-polished ends) allow easier insertion of rubber or silicone stoppers and are preferred for plugging with cotton wool for microbial culture. Rimmed tubes have a flared lip that facilitates pouring and is compatible with spring-metal tube closures. Confirm your closure type before ordering in bulk. Size and Volume The most common test tube dimensions in clinical and research labs: 12×75 mm: ~5 mL capacity; standard for flow cytometry, FACS, serology 13×100 mm: ~10 mL; general culture and chemistry 16×100 mm: ~14 mL; culture and chemistry 16×125 mm: ~17 mL; microbiological culture 18×150 mm: ~25 mL; larger-volume digests and culture Wall thickness of 1.2 mm (light wall, borosilicate 3.3) is the standard for general lab use; heavy-wall versions are used for digestions and applications involving vacuum or pressure. Sterile vs. Non-Sterile Sterile borosilicate glass culture tubes (individually wrapped or bulk-sterilized) are required for microbial culture, cell culture, and any application where contamination would invalidate the result. Non-sterile tubes are adequate for chemistry, spectroscopy, and other abiotic applications. Disposable PS tubes from Corning (PYREX™) and Globe Scientific are supplied sterile or non-sterile; confirm the specification on the lot certificate.

Specifications Context

Borosilicate glass 3.3 test tubes have a linear thermal expansion coefficient of 3.3 × 10⁻⁶ K⁻¹, providing resistance to thermal shock from room temperature to 300 °C (direct flame) and from 0 to 121 °C (autoclave cycles). Light-wall tubes (1.2 mm uniform wall thickness) provide the standard for general laboratory use; heavy-wall variants (2.0 mm) are used for digestion vessels and pressurized applications. Corning PYREX™ disposable round-bottom rimless glass tubes for tissue culture conform to ASTM standards and are the reference format for bacteriological serology and cell wash procedures. MBP supplies Globe Scientific and NEST Scientific test tube lines for research and clinical labs across the USA, Canada, and worldwide.

Formaldehyde Control

What Are Formaldehyde Control Products?

Formaldehyde control products are workplace safety tools used to monitor and manage exposure to airborne formaldehyde in laboratory and healthcare environments. These products are commonly used in histology, pathology, anatomy, and research laboratories where formalin-based fixatives are routinely handled during specimen preparation and preservation.
Because formalin is widely used as a tissue fixative, monitoring employee exposure is an important part of laboratory safety programs. Formaldehyde control products help laboratories assess exposure levels, document monitoring activities, and support compliance with workplace safety requirements.
Laboratories that routinely use formalin should implement formaldehyde monitoring programs, with passive badge dosimeters being one of the most common methods for measuring employee exposure over a work shift.

Passive Badges vs Real-Time Monitors
Passive dosimeter badges are designed to measure employee exposure over an extended sampling period, typically a full work shift. These badges are worn by personnel and provide time-weighted average (TWA) exposure data that can be used for workplace monitoring and documentation.
Real-time monitors provide immediate readings of airborne formaldehyde concentrations. They are useful for investigating ventilation issues, evaluating work areas, and assessing conditions after spills or other incidents. However, they are generally used as supplemental monitoring tools rather than replacements for long-term exposure measurements.
Detection Range
When selecting a monitoring product, it is important to ensure that the detection range is appropriate for the expected workplace environment. Products designed for laboratory use typically measure concentrations across ranges relevant to occupational exposure monitoring programs.
Monitoring Frequency
Routine monitoring schedules help laboratories track exposure levels over time. Additional monitoring may be appropriate when laboratory procedures, equipment, staffing, ventilation systems, or formalin usage patterns change significantly.
Personnel Monitoring
Employees who regularly handle formalin-containing materials or work in areas where formaldehyde may be present are commonly included in monitoring programs. Monitoring helps laboratories evaluate workplace conditions and identify opportunities for improving safety controls.
Documentation and Recordkeeping
Accurate recordkeeping is an important component of formaldehyde monitoring programs. Laboratories often maintain records that include monitoring dates, employee assignments, badge identification numbers, sampling locations, and analytical results. Certificates of analysis and related documentation may also be retained as part of quality and compliance programs.

Specifications Context

Formaldehyde monitoring products are widely used in histology and pathology laboratories where formalin-based tissue fixation is performed. Passive monitoring systems commonly use chemically treated collection media to capture airborne formaldehyde during the sampling period, followed by laboratory analysis.
Workplace exposure monitoring programs help laboratories evaluate ventilation effectiveness, document employee exposure levels, and support occupational safety initiatives. Many laboratories incorporate formaldehyde monitoring into their broader environmental health and safety programs.

Centrifuge Tubes

What Are Centrifuge Tubes?

Centrifuge tubes are cylindrical laboratory containers with caps that are used to separate, pellet, and store biological or chemical samples through centrifugal force. They are commonly made from polypropylene (PP) or polystyrene (PS) and are available in sizes ranging from small 0.5 mL microtubes to larger 50 mL conical tubes. These tubes are widely used for cell pelleting, protein precipitation, DNA and RNA extraction, tissue homogenate clarification, and long-term sample storage. Depending on the material, they can withstand temperatures from −80 °C to +121 °C.
In short, the best centrifuge tube depends on your centrifuge rotor, required g-force, sample volume, and sterility needs.

How to Choose Centrifuge Tubes

Volume and Rotor Compatibility
Select a tube size that matches both your sample volume and centrifuge rotor. Microtubes ranging from 0.5–2 mL are commonly used in microcentrifuges and can typically handle speeds up to 20,000 × g. Midi tubes in the 5–10 mL range are suitable for intermediate sample volumes, while 15 mL and 50 mL conical tubes are commonly used in clinical, research, and preparative centrifuges.
Material: Polypropylene vs. Polystyrene
Polypropylene (PP) tubes offer excellent chemical resistance and can tolerate temperatures from −80 °C to +121 °C. They are suitable for autoclaving and exposure to many laboratory solvents. Polystyrene (PS) tubes provide superior optical clarity, making it easier to visually inspect samples and liquid levels, but they have lower resistance to solvents and extreme temperatures.
Sterility and Contamination Control
Sterile centrifuge tubes are typically gamma- or E-beam-irradiated and certified free of RNase, DNase, and pyrogens. These tubes are recommended for RNA extraction, cell culture, and clinical applications where contamination must be minimized. Non-sterile tubes may still be RNase- and DNase-free and are often suitable for routine DNA work and general sample storage.
Cap Design
Attached screw caps help prevent cap mix-ups and sample contamination, especially in high-throughput laboratories. Separate caps can be quicker to open and may be preferred in workflows that require frequent access to samples. If tubes will be used with automated systems, cap dimensions should be verified for compatibility with liquid handling equipment.
Packaging Options
Racked tubes provide convenient organization and allow direct pipetting while the tubes remain in the rack. Bulk-bagged tubes offer a more economical option for laboratories that process large volumes of samples and already have tube storage systems in place.

Microtubes (0.5–2 mL) are ideal for PCR preparation, microcentrifuge applications, and storage of small sample volumes. They can generally withstand centrifugal forces up to 20,000 × g.
Midi tubes (5–10 mL) are designed for intermediate sample volumes such as culture supernatants and can typically tolerate forces up to 16,000 × g.
Sterile 15 mL conical tubes are frequently used for cell pelleting, RNA extraction, and clinical sample processing, with typical ratings between 12,000 and 15,000 × g.
Sterile 50 mL conical tubes are commonly selected for larger-volume applications including tissue culture work, density gradient preparation, and large-scale sample processing.
Polystyrene conical tubes in 15 mL and 50 mL formats are often chosen when visual sample inspection is important and solvent exposure is minimal.

Specifications and Features

Polypropylene centrifuge tubes from Globe Scientific and Nest Scientific are manufactured from USP Class VI virgin resin and do not contain plasticizers or processing additives. Sterile products are typically irradiated to achieve a sterility assurance level (SAL) of 10⁻⁶. Most 15 mL tubes feature graduation marks at 1 mL intervals, while 50 mL tubes are usually graduated every 5 mL.
Volume and Rotor Compatibility
Selecting the correct tube size is essential for safe and efficient centrifugation. Microtubes ranging from 0.5–2 mL are designed for microcentrifuges, while 5–10 mL midi tubes fit compatible benchtop centrifuge rotors. Larger 15 mL and 50 mL conical tubes are commonly used in clinical and research centrifuges. Always verify rotor compatibility before introducing a new tube format into your workflow.
Sterility Requirements
For sensitive applications such as RNA extraction, cell culture, and clinical diagnostics, sterile tubes certified free of RNase, DNase, and pyrogens are recommended. Non-sterile tubes can provide a cost-effective solution for routine DNA analysis, protein assays, and general sample storage where sterility is not critical.
Material Selection
Polypropylene tubes offer excellent durability, can be autoclaved at 121 °C, and resist many laboratory chemicals and solvents. Polystyrene tubes provide superior transparency, making it easier to monitor liquid levels and sample contents, although they are less resistant to heat and solvents.
Packaging and Inventory Planning
Microtubes are commonly available in pack sizes ranging from 500 to 1,000 units, while 15 mL and 50 mL conical tubes are often supplied in cases of 500. Laboratories with consistent usage may benefit from establishing recurring purchase orders to ensure uninterrupted supply.

Innoculating Needles/Loops

What Are Inoculating Loops and Needles?

Inoculating loops and needles are essential microbiology tools used to transfer microorganisms between culture media, agar plates, broth tubes, and other laboratory growth systems. An inoculating loop features a small circular end designed to hold a defined volume of liquid culture, while an inoculating needle has a straight tip used for picking colonies and inoculating semi-solid media. Modern disposable versions are manufactured from sterile polypropylene or polystyrene and have largely replaced reusable metal loops in many laboratories, helping reduce cross-contamination risks and eliminating the need for flame sterilization between samples. These tools are widely used in clinical microbiology, research laboratories, pharmaceutical testing, food microbiology, and environmental monitoring applications.

How to Choose Inoculating Loops and Needles

Volume: 1 µL vs. 10 µL
The choice of loop volume depends on the application. A 1 µL calibrated loop is commonly used for quantitative urine cultures and other procedures where accurate sample volume directly affects colony counts and microbial enumeration. A 10 µL loop is the standard option for routine streak plating, subculturing, and general microorganism transfer where larger sample volumes are beneficial.
Rigidity: Flexible PP vs. Rigid PS
Flexible polypropylene loops are designed to glide smoothly across agar surfaces, minimizing damage to the media during streaking procedures. Rigid polystyrene loops and needles provide greater control when inoculating broth cultures, retrieving colonies, or performing stab inoculations in semi-solid agar. Many laboratories keep both flexible and rigid options available to accommodate different microbiological techniques.
Calibration and Lot Certification
For quantitative microbiology applications, calibrated loops should be selected to ensure consistent volume delivery. Certified loops undergo validation testing to verify that they deliver the specified sample volume accurately. This level of quality assurance is particularly important in clinical laboratories performing urine cultures and other quantitative microbial analyses.
Packaging Format
Individually packaged sterile loops provide maximum sterility assurance and are ideal for low-volume testing environments. Bulk-packaged sterile loops offer a more economical solution for high-throughput laboratories where large quantities are used daily. The choice depends on workflow requirements, usage frequency, and laboratory contamination-control practices.

Specifications Context

Disposable inoculating loops and needles are typically manufactured from medical-grade polypropylene or polystyrene and supplied sterile for immediate use. Standard loop sizes are designed to deliver consistent volumes and feature smooth surfaces that support accurate sample transfer. Many calibrated loops are tested using recognized verification methods and supplied with lot-specific certification to support laboratory quality assurance requirements. Disposable plastic loops are now widely used across clinical, academic, pharmaceutical, and industrial microbiology laboratories due to their convenience, consistency, and reduced contamination risk compared with reusable metal alternatives.
