Saliva collection kits are all-in-one non-invasive devices for collecting 1–2 mL of human saliva and immediately stabilizing DNA, RNA, or both using a pre-filled preservative—no phlebotomy or cold chain required. Zymo Research kits using DNA/RNA Shield preserve dual nucleic acids at ambient temperature for up to 28 days and are validated for mail-in use under UN3373 and IATA P650.
MBP supplies Zymo Research saliva collection kits for use in genomics, microbiome, transcriptomics, and population studies, with bulk pricing and PO ordering available for labs in the USA, Canada, and worldwide. Request a quote by contacting customerservice@mbpinc.net
Saliva collection kits are non-invasive, all-in-one systems for collecting 1–2 mL of human saliva and immediately stabilizing the nucleic acid content—DNA, RNA, or both—using a pre-filled preservative reagent in a leak-proof polypropylene tube. They are used in genetic ancestry testing, population genomics, microbiome profiling, SARS-CoV-2 and respiratory virus detection, liquid biopsy research, and at-home or remote sampling studies. Collection requires only a spitting action with no phlebotomy or trained personnel. Choose saliva collection kits over blood-based collection when non-invasive sampling, self-collection, or at-home workflows are required.
Nucleic Acid Target
DNA-stabilizing saliva kits (e.g., Zymo DNA/RNA Shield saliva format) preserve genomic DNA for genotyping, GWAS, and ancestry applications. Dual DNA/RNA kits preserve both intracellular and extracellular nucleic acids, enabling RNA-seq and liquid biopsy alongside genotyping from a single specimen—an advantage over single-analyte formats.
Preservative Chemistry
Zymo Research saliva collection kits use 2 mL of DNA/RNA Shield as the preservative, added post-collection via ampoule. This stabilizes DNA and RNA at ambient temperature for up to 28 days and inactivates viruses including SARS-CoV-2 for safe mailing. PAXgene Saliva Collector (Qiagen) uses a different chemistry that stabilizes DNA for up to 5 days at 4–25 °C; check storage window before selecting for remote-collection studies with long transit times.
Collection Volume
Standard saliva collection tubes require 1.0–2.0 mL of spit. Reduced-volume devices (sponge or swab-based) are available for donors unable to produce adequate spit volume (pediatric, elderly). Confirm your extraction kit's minimum input volume against the expected collection yield.
Leak-Proof and Shipping Compliance
For mail-in studies, tubes must meet 95 kPa pressure test requirements for transport under IATA P650 and UN3373 Biological Substance Category B. Zymo Research and DNA Genotek saliva kits are validated for standard courier mailing; verify this specification before deploying at-home collection in clinical or population studies.
Barcoding and Tracking
High-throughput population studies benefit from tubes pre-labeled with unique serial numbers for secure, anonymous sample tracking. Select kit formats with barcoded tubes when managing hundreds to thousands of samples across multi-site research.
Saliva collection tubes are manufactured from medical-grade polypropylene (PP) and are validated as leak-proof to 95 kPa for mailing compliance. The collection funnel attaches to the tube body; after saliva collection, the funnel is removed, and the preservative ampoule is emptied into the tube, bringing the preservative: saliva ratio to approximately 1:1. Zymo Research saliva kits yield 5–20 µg genomic DNA and 1–10 µg total RNA from a standard 2 mL saliva sample after extraction with Quick-DNA/RNA kits. Saliva-based nucleic acid collection is validated for SARS-CoV-2 RNA detection, human microbiome profiling, and whole-genome sequencing (WGS) workflows.
