Universal Fit Pipette Tips for Broad Pipettor Compatibility

Universal fit pipette tips are single-use polypropylene tips engineered with standardised collar geometry to seal on most major air-displacement pipette brands — including Eppendorf Research, Rainin Classic (non-LTS), Thermo Finnpipette, and Sartorius/BioHit — without brand-specific variants. Available in standard, filtered (aerosol-barrier), and low-retention surface finishes across 10 µL, 200 µL, and 1,000/1,250 µL volume ranges in racked, reload, and bulk formats.

MBP Inc. stocks Sorenson Bioscience and Nest Scientific universal fit tips, pre-sterilised and DNase/RNase-free, for labs across the USA and Canada. Contact customerservice@mbpinc.net  for further details!

What Are Universal Fit Pipette Tips?

Universal fit pipette tips use collar diameters standardised across most major air-displacement pipette brands, allowing a single tip product to seat on pipettes from multiple manufacturers. The three primary collar sizes are: 3.8 mm for ≤10 µL tips, 6.1 mm for ≤200 µL tips, and approximately 7.5–8.0 mm for P1000 tips. These collar sizes cover Eppendorf Research Plus, Rainin Classic (non-LTS), Thermo Finnpipette, Sartorius/BioHit, and VWR pipettes. Universal fit tips cover most lab pipettes at a lower cost per tip — the exception is Rainin LTS, which needs dedicated LTS tips.

How to Choose Universal Fit Pipette Tips

Volume Range: Match Tip to Pipette
10 µL universal tips (3.8 mm collar) cover 0.1–10 µL single-channel pipettes and the P10 range. 200 µL universal tips (6.1 mm collar) cover P20, P50, P100, and P200 pipettes. 1,000 µL universal tips cover P1000 pipettes and are available in standard-length and extended-length formats. 1,250 µL macro universal tips accommodate high-volume dispensing steps in the 1,000–1,250 µL range.

Standard vs Filtered Universal Tips
Standard universal tips are sufficient for buffer, media, and reagent dispensing. Filtered universal tips — with hydrophobic PE or cellulose aerosol barrier — are required for PCR setup, RNA work, and any contamination-sensitive application. Using filtered tips universally reduces contamination risk in shared pipettes at the cost of approximately 1.5–2× the price of standard tips.

Low-Retention Universal Tips
Low-retention universal tips minimise residual volume on the inner tip wall. This matters at ≤10 µL, where standard tips may retain 0.2–0.5 µL, creating a systematic under-delivery error. Sorenson's universal low-retention tips maintain compatibility with all major standard-collar pipettes.

Packaging Format
Racked (hinged 96-tip rack): standard for manual pipetting. Reload inserts: drop into reusable rack bases; 20–30% lower per-tip cost and reduced plastic. Bulk (non-sterile bag): lowest cost per tip for non-sterile buffer/media work. Sterile racked tips are required for cell culture, RNA, and clean applications.

OneTouch / Ergonomic Formats
OneTouch reload formats allow the full tip insert to be loaded into the pipette simultaneously, reducing repetitive-strain impact from individual tip-loading in high-throughput workflows.

Specifications Context

Universal fit tips are manufactured from 100% virgin polypropylene, certified DNase-free, RNase-free, ATP-free, human DNA-free, pyrogen-free, and PCR inhibitor-free per lot. Sorenson Bioscience universal tips are manufactured in a Class 100,000 cleanroom, pre-sterilised, and sold through MBP Inc. in standard racks, EcoRack reloads, and bulk formats. Universal fit tips remain the highest-volume tip category in North American research labs due to multi-brand compatibility and lower cost per tip versus pipette-specific variants.

If you’re setting up a workflow or mixing pipette brands in the same lab, it’s usually worth sorting tip compatibility early — it removes a lot of small daily friction that adds up over time. Contact the MBP team to get a tailored quote!

FAQ

Universal fit pipette tips are compatible with Eppendorf Research Plus, Rainin Classic (non-LTS), Thermo Finnpipette, Sartorius/BioHit, and VWR pipettes, which all use standardised collar diameters of 3.8 mm (≤10 µL), 6.1 mm (≤200 µL), or ~7.5 mm (P1000). They are not compatible with Rainin LTS or Eppendorf epT.I.P.S. proprietary cone systems.
Universal fit tips from quality manufacturers such as Sorenson Bioscience achieve accuracy within the ISO 8655 specification for most standard pipettes. Pipette-specific tips can offer a marginally tighter collar seal for their designated instrument, but the difference is negligible for most routine molecular biology applications when universal tips are manufactured to consistent dimensional tolerances.
Universal pipette tips use three standard collar diameters: approximately 3.8 mm for ≤10 µL tips (P2, P10), 6.1 mm for ≤200 µL tips (P20, P100, P200), and approximately 7.5–8.0 mm for P1000 tips. These collar sizes are the basis for cross-brand compatibility with most standard air-displacement pipettes.
Universal fit tips do not work with Rainin LTS (Latch Tip System) pipettes, which use a proprietary bayonet-style mounting that requires dedicated Rainin LTS tips. Standard universal tips are compatible with Rainin Classic non-LTS pipettes, which use standard 3.8 mm and 6.1 mm collar geometry.
Sorenson Bioscience and Nest Scientific universal fit tips stocked by MBP Inc. are pre-sterilised and independently certified DNase-free, RNase-free, ATP-free, human DNA-free, pyrogen-free, and PCR inhibitor-free per lot. Bulk non-sterile bags are also available for applications where sterility is not required.
Standard universal tips have no filter element and are appropriate for routine buffer, media, and reagent dispensing. Filtered universal tips contain a hydrophobic PE or cellulose aerosol-barrier plug that prevents aerosol and liquid from reaching the pipette barrel — required for PCR setup, RNA handling, and work with biohazardous or infectious samples.
Reload inserts are tip tray inserts that drop into a reusable rack base, replacing only the tip array rather than discarding the full rack assembly. For high-volume labs buying thousands of tips per month, reload formats reduce per-tip cost by 20–30% and significantly reduce plastic waste versus hinged rack formats.
Universal fit tips are available in 10 µL (for P2–P10 pipettes), 200 µL (for P20–P200), 1,000 µL (for P1000), and 1,250 µL extended formats. Low-retention variants are available in 10 µL, 200 µL, and 1,000 µL; filtered variants span the full 10–1,250 µL range.
Pre-sterilised universal fit tips should be stored in their original sealed racks at room temperature, away from direct UV light and chemical vapours. Once a rack is opened, tips remain usable but should be covered between uses to prevent dust accumulation; partially used racks should not be re-autoclaved.
