Griffin style beakers are low-form cylindrical vessels with a height-to-diameter ratio of approximately 1.0:1.4 — shorter and wider than tall-form (Berzelius) beakers — designed for stable stirring on a magnetic stir plate, heating on a hot plate, and general reagent handling on the bench. The flat base provides maximum contact with hot-plate surfaces for uniform heating; the wide opening allows easy reagent addition, thermometer insertion, and stirring access. Size Selection
MBP stocks Griffin style beakers from 10 mL to 5,000 mL. Common bench sizes include 50 mL and 100 mL for small-scale reactions and staining, 250 mL for routine buffer work, 1,000 mL for media or reagent preparation, and 2,000 mL for larger-volume batches. As a general guideline, beakers should be filled to no more than two-thirds of their nominal capacity when heating to allow for liquid expansion and prevent boil-over.
Graduation: Molded vs. Printed
Molded graduations are permanently embossed into the glass and are resistant to solvents, autoclaving, and repeated cleaning cycles. Printed dual-scale graduations provide higher contrast for quick bench reading but may fade over time with repeated autoclaving or exposure to aggressive solvents.
Borosilicate Glass
Griffin style beakers at MBP are made from borosilicate glass, which is resistant to acids, bases, alcohols, and most organic solvents, and is autoclavable at 121°C. Its low thermal expansion coefficient (~3.3×10⁻⁶/K) helps prevent cracking during rapid heating or cooling.

Griffin style (low form) glass beakers conform to ASTM E960 with graduation accuracy of ±5% of total capacity. The low height-to-diameter ratio provides greater stability than tall-form beakers on stirrers and hot plates. Borosilicate glass is inert to HCl, H₂SO₄, HNO₃, CH₃COOH, NaOH, acetone, ethanol, methanol, and xylene. Hydrofluoric acid (HF) must not be used with glass as it dissolves silica-based materials. These beakers are suitable for autoclaving at 121°C (wet cycle) and dry-heat sterilisation up to 500°C.
