Hotplate & Stirrer Accessories

What Are Hotplate and Stirrer Accessories?

Hotplate and stirrer accessories are supplementary components for single-position and multi-position hotplate stirrers that improve temperature accuracy, expand vessel compatibility, enable reflux setups, and maintain equipment in working condition. The most important accessory for research-grade hotplate use is an external temperature probe, which monitors actual solution temperature rather than hotplate surface temperature, which can be 20 to 50 degrees C higher than the liquid in the vessel. PTFE stir bars in standard cylindrical, oval, octagonal, cross-shaped, and polygon geometries allow matching of bar shape to vessel type and mixing requirement. Support rods and clamp assemblies secure condensers, separating funnels, and other glassware above the hotplate for reflux chemistry. Magnetic stir bar retrieval wands recover stir bars from flasks without contaminating the solution. An external temperature probe is the single most impactful hotplate stirrer accessory: without one, you are controlling plate temperature, not solution temperature, and the two can differ by 20 to 50 degrees C.

How to Choose Hotplate and Stirrer Accessories

External temperature probes
Confirm probe type compatibility with the hotplate stirrer model: most digital hotplate stirrers accept either a PT1000 resistance temperature detector (RTD) or a Type K thermocouple, and these are not interchangeable between models. The probe is inserted directly into the solution and feeds temperature data back to the PID controller to maintain the solution (not the plate surface) at the setpoint. Probe length and sheath material (stainless steel, glass, or PTFE) should be matched to the vessel size and chemical compatibility requirements.
PTFE stir bars: geometry and size
PTFE stir bars are available in cylindrical, oval (egg-shaped), octagonal, cross (X-shape), polygon, and ring geometries. Cylindrical bars are the most common general-purpose format. Octagonal bars provide more turbulent mixing in flat-bottomed vessels than cylindrical bars. Cross-shaped bars improve mixing in round-bottom flasks by preventing the bar from riding the wall. Ring or hoop bars are used for mixing around fixed probes or frits inside the vessel. Stir bar length is selected to match vessel diameter, typically 30 to 50% of vessel inner diameter.
Support stands and clamp sets.
Support stands (rod-and-base assemblies) mount above or adjacent to the hotplate to hold condensers, addition funnels, thermometers, and other glassware in reflux setups. Confirm rod diameter compatibility with the clamp set (most lab glassware clamps fit 12.7 mm or 16 mm rods). Weighted bases provide stability for tall assemblies. Crossbar assemblies allow horizontal positioning of clamps at adjustable heights along the support rod.
Magnetic stir bar retrieval tools
Stir bar retrievers are magnetic wands encased in a non-contaminating sleeve (PTFE or glass) that attract and remove the stir bar from a vessel without inserting fingers or metal into the sample. Available as handheld wands or bench-mounted extractors. An essential accessory for labs processing multiple samples per day, as losing track of stir bars is among the most common minor equipment management issues in bench chemistry.
Replacement sensors and calibration weights
Temperature probes degrade after repeated heating cycles or chemical exposure; replace probes showing drift against a calibrated reference thermometer. For hotplate stirrer models with external calibration weights (balance verification), confirm the weight set is OIML or ASTM traceable for regulated workflows.

Specifications Context

PTFE stir bars should be inspected regularly for chipped or worn PTFE coating. Bare metal exposure from a chipped bar contaminates the sample with metallic particles and alters the bar's magnetic coupling properties, resulting in reduced mixing efficiency or bar stall at lower speeds. Discard and replace any stir bar showing PTFE damage. For regulated lab environments (GMP, ISO 17025), maintain a stir bar inventory log and retire bars on a scheduled basis. External temperature probes rated for immersion in aqueous solutions should be verified against a calibrated reference thermometer at least annually; probes showing more than 1 degree C deviation should be recalibrated or replaced.

Serological Pipettes

What Are Serological Pipettes?

Serological pipettes are calibrated, graduated, sterile polystyrene disposable pipettes used with a motorised pipette controller to transfer measured volumes of liquid in the 1–100 mL range. They are the primary tool for cell culture media transfer, buffer preparation, reagent dispensing in volumes above 1 mL, and serial dilutions requiring volumetric accuracy in the millilitre range. They differ from aspirating pipettes — which have no graduations and are used only for vacuum-assisted waste removal — and from microcentrifuge tubes, which are not dispensing instruments. Serological pipettes are the correct format for any measured liquid transfer ≥1 mL in cell culture or reagent preparation; pair them with a motorised pipette controller for safe, ergonomic operation.

How to Choose Serological Pipettes

Volume: Standard Sizes and ISO 7550 Colour Coding ISO 7550 assigns a specific colour code to each serological pipette volume: 1 mL = red; 2 mL = yellow; 5 mL = blue; 10 mL = orange; 25 mL = green; 50 mL = purple (pink/violet depending on supplier). Colour coding allows quick visual volume identification when multiple sizes are in use simultaneously in a BSC. Packaging: Individual Wrap vs Bulk Individually wrapped sterile pipettes are required for cell culture, molecular biology, and aseptic technique. Plastic/plastic peel-open packaging eliminates paper particulate from paper/plastic wrappers — important in sensitive cell culture applications and for RNA work. Bulk-packed (canister or bag) formats are cost-effective for non-sterile applications such as buffer preparation and reagent dispensing in fume hoods. Construction: 1-Piece vs 3-Piece 1 mL, 2 mL, and 5 mL serological pipettes are typically one-piece moulded polystyrene constructions. 10 mL, 25 mL, and 50 mL pipettes use 3-piece ultrasonically welded construction (Globe Scientific) for the body-to-cone and body-to-cap joints — essential for the structural integrity of larger formats under aspiration vacuum. Tip and Graduation Features Negative graduations (markings above the nominal maximum) allow volumes slightly above nominal to be read. Fine-point tips with slow drip-off improve pipetting accuracy during cell culture media transfers. Some brands offer Wobble-not-style pipettes with reduced barrel flex for easier single-hand operation. Filter Plug Material Cotton filter plugs are standard; synthetic plugs (polyethylene or polypropylene) are preferred when processing organic solvents or any media that might wick through a cotton plug.

Serological pipettes are manufactured from optically clear virgin polystyrene in Class 100,000 cleanroom conditions. Sterility: individually wrapped pipettes are EO-sterilised to SAL 10⁻⁶; non-pyrogenic, non-cytotoxic, DNase-free, and RNase-free per lot. ISO 7550 defines colour coding for serological pipettes; many US suppliers follow this standard, though it is not universally mandated. Calibrated to deliver (TD) with blow-out (marked with a double band or 'TD' marking) — all liquid must be expelled from the tip for accurate delivery. Globe Scientific, Nest Scientific, and Falcon remain the dominant serological pipette brands in North American cell culture labs.

Staining: Coplin Jars Coplin staining jars are vertical-slot containers that hold 5–10 slides facing outward, immersing them simultaneously in staining reagents — haematoxylin, eosin, Gram stains, silver stains, and alcohols. Glass Coplin jars are solvent-resistant for xylene and all laboratory alcohols; polypropylene versions are suitable for aqueous and mildly solvent-containing reagents but are not xylene-compatible. Transport: Slide Mailers Three mailer types address different transport needs. Flip-top plastic mailers are reusable for short-range intra-facility transport. Polypropylene mailers with red screw caps provide a leak-proof sealed closure for shipping biological specimens. Cardboard mailers offer a lower-cost option for non-biohazardous, short-distance lab-to-lab sharing. Bench Access: Slide Dispensers Slide dispensers hold up to 72 slides in a tilted stack, dispensing one slide at a time from the front with one-handed access. This prevents contamination from repeatedly handling the full slide stack and reduces breakage during high-volume staining sessions. Archiving: 20-Place File Holders and Cabinets Twenty-place slide file holders accommodate a single case's slides in a flat, portable format suitable for filing or transporting a patient case. Expandable slide storage cabinets provide modular drawer-based storage for collections that grow over time, holding 100–500+ slides per cabinet unit.

Specifications Context

Glass Coplin jars are resistant to xylene, acetone, and all laboratory alcohols. Polypropylene Coplin jars tolerate aqueous and mildly solvent-containing stains but are NOT compatible with xylene — use glass jars for any step involving xylene or halogenated solvents. Polypropylene screw-cap slide mailers from MBP provide a leak-resistant sealed closure for shipping slides containing biological specimens; labs shipping Category B biological substances should confirm UN3373 / IATA P650 compliance of their complete packaging before shipping. Slide dispensers at MBP hold up to 72 standard 25×75mm slides.

Material: Glass vs. Polypropylene vs. Polystyrene Borosilicate glass 3.3 (ASTM E438 Type I, Class B) test tubes withstand direct flame, autoclave sterilization at 121 °C, and most solvents, acids, and bases. They are reusable and autoclavable, making them cost-effective over high-volume laboratory runs. Polystyrene (PS) disposable tubes offer outstanding optical clarity for flow cytometry (FACS), cell counting, and OD-based colorimetric assays, but cannot be autoclaved and should not be used with aromatic solvents or strong acids. Polypropylene (PP) tubes are chemically resistant, autoclavable, and available with screw caps for anaerobic culture or gas-generating reactions. Rimmed vs. Rimless Rimless test tubes (fire-polished ends) allow easier insertion of rubber or silicone stoppers and are preferred for plugging with cotton wool for microbial culture. Rimmed tubes have a flared lip that facilitates pouring and is compatible with spring-metal tube closures. Confirm your closure type before ordering in bulk. Size and Volume The most common test tube dimensions in clinical and research labs: 12×75 mm: ~5 mL capacity; standard for flow cytometry, FACS, serology 13×100 mm: ~10 mL; general culture and chemistry 16×100 mm: ~14 mL; culture and chemistry 16×125 mm: ~17 mL; microbiological culture 18×150 mm: ~25 mL; larger-volume digests and culture Wall thickness of 1.2 mm (light wall, borosilicate 3.3) is the standard for general lab use; heavy-wall versions are used for digestions and applications involving vacuum or pressure. Sterile vs. Non-Sterile Sterile borosilicate glass culture tubes (individually wrapped or bulk-sterilized) are required for microbial culture, cell culture, and any application where contamination would invalidate the result. Non-sterile tubes are adequate for chemistry, spectroscopy, and other abiotic applications. Disposable PS tubes from Corning (PYREX™) and Globe Scientific are supplied sterile or non-sterile; confirm the specification on the lot certificate.

Specifications Context

Borosilicate glass 3.3 test tubes have a linear thermal expansion coefficient of 3.3 × 10⁻⁶ K⁻¹, providing resistance to thermal shock from room temperature to 300 °C (direct flame) and from 0 to 121 °C (autoclave cycles). Light-wall tubes (1.2 mm uniform wall thickness) provide the standard for general laboratory use; heavy-wall variants (2.0 mm) are used for digestion vessels and pressurized applications. Corning PYREX™ disposable round-bottom rimless glass tubes for tissue culture conform to ASTM standards and are the reference format for bacteriological serology and cell wash procedures. MBP supplies Globe Scientific and NEST Scientific test tube lines for research and clinical labs across the USA, Canada, and worldwide.

Storage Boxes & Racks

What Are Laboratory Storage Boxes and Racks?

Laboratory storage boxes and racks are essential organizational systems used to store, organize, and protect cryogenic vials, microcentrifuge tubes, centrifuge tubes, and microscope slides across freezers, cold rooms, and benchtop environments. Storage boxes are typically lidded, grid-based containers used for long-term sample organization in ultra-low temperature conditions, while racks are open-frame supports used for active handling during laboratory workflows such as pipetting, vortexing, and reaction setup.
Cryogenic storage boxes are commonly designed to hold 81 vials (9×9 format) or 100 vials (10×10 format), and are compatible with storage conditions ranging from –196 °C in liquid nitrogen vapor phase to +121 °C for autoclave sterilization (depending on material). Tube racks, on the other hand, provide stable upright positioning of tubes during active benchwork and are not primarily intended for long-term freezer storage.

Vial Format and Capacity
The first selection criterion is compatibility with tube size and grid layout. The most common format is the 81-place (9×9) box designed for 1.0–2.0 mL cryovials. Smaller or specialized formats may accommodate 5 mL tubes or different vial diameters depending on grid spacing. Proper matching ensures secure fit, easy retrieval, and consistent sample organization in high-density storage systems.
Temperature Range
Material selection determines allowable storage conditions. Polycarbonate cryogenic boxes are the most versatile, supporting temperatures from liquid nitrogen levels (–196 °C) through –80 °C freezer storage and up to autoclave sterilization at +121 °C. Cardboard freezer boxes with moisture-resistant coating are designed for economical freezer storage and can withstand ultra-low temperatures, but they are not suitable for autoclaving or long-term moisture exposure.
Tube Rack Materials and Use
Polypropylene racks are widely used because they are autoclavable and chemically resistant, making them suitable for sterile workflows. ABS and polystyrene racks provide lower-cost alternatives for general laboratory bench use but are not designed for autoclave conditions. For freezer organization, stainless steel racks are often used to hold multiple cryoboxes within –80 °C upright freezer systems, improving accessibility and spatial organization.
Slide Storage Boxes
Microscope slide storage boxes are designed to protect standard 25 × 75 mm slides. They are available in 25-, 50-, and 100-slide capacities. Polypropylene versions are autoclavable and suitable for sterilized workflows, while fiberboard or ABS versions are typically used for room-temperature archival storage and transport.
Color Coding and Sample Identification
Color-coded storage boxes are widely used in biobanking and high-throughput laboratories to quickly differentiate sample groups without opening boxes or reading labels at freezer temperatures. Common systems include multiple lid colors paired with alphanumeric grids inside the box, enabling precise sample tracking and retrieval in large inventories.

Modern polycarbonate cryogenic storage boxes are engineered for extreme temperature stability, typically rated from –196 °C to +121 °C, allowing use across liquid nitrogen vapor phase storage, –80 °C freezers, and autoclave sterilization cycles. Cardboard freezer boxes are coated to resist moisture ingress and are optimized for cost-efficient high-density storage in ultra-low temperature environments.
The 81-place (9×9 grid) polycarbonate cryobox remains the standard format in most biorepositories and clinical research facilities due to its compatibility with SBS footprint freezer systems and automated inventory tracking workflows. These systems are widely used in genomics, cell banking, and pharmaceutical research environments.
