Cold Storage Coolers & Chillers

What Are Cold Storage Coolers and Chillers?

Laboratory cold storage coolers and chillers are bench-top temperature-control systems designed to keep temperature-sensitive reagents, enzymes, antibodies, cells, and biological samples cold during active laboratory work. They maintain low temperatures—typically around 0 °C or below freezing—without requiring ice, electricity (in passive systems), or immediate access to a freezer. These systems are widely used in molecular biology, PCR setup, nucleic acid extraction, enzyme handling, and cell-based assays where maintaining cold-chain conditions during pipetting and multi-step workflows is essential.
Gel-based benchtop coolers are the most common type. They are pre-frozen at approximately –20 °C and use phase-change materials to maintain samples near 0 °C for several hours, typically up to four hours depending on ambient conditions. This provides a clean, stable, and consistent cooling environment without melting ice or water contamination.

Tube Format Compatibility
Coolers and chillers are designed around specific laboratory tube formats. Common configurations include holders for 0.2 mL PCR tubes and strips, 1.5/2.0 mL microcentrifuge tubes, 15 mL conical tubes, and 50 mL conical tubes. Some dual-sided designs combine multiple formats in a single unit, allowing simultaneous use for PCR plates on one side and microtubes on the other, improving workflow efficiency and reducing bench clutter.
Temperature Hold and Duration
Passive gel-based coolers maintain approximately 0 °C for several hours after being pre-chilled at –20 °C. Their performance depends on ambient temperature, workload, and sample frequency. Metal cooling blocks pre-chilled at –80 °C can achieve lower temperatures temporarily but warm more quickly. For workflows requiring long-duration or continuously controlled cooling, electrically powered thermoelectric chillers provide stable setpoints over extended periods.
Ice-Free vs Ice-Based Systems
Gel-based coolers eliminate the need for ice entirely, reducing condensation, contamination risk, and constant ice replenishment during experiments. Traditional ice buckets remain a low-cost option but require continuous maintenance and can introduce water exposure risks. Ice-free systems are preferred in workflows where moisture control and consistent temperature stability are critical.
Single-Sided vs Dual-Sided Designs
Single-sided coolers are suitable for workflows using one tube format consistently. Dual-sided coolers accommodate multiple formats—such as PCR plates and microtubes—within a single unit, making them more versatile for complex molecular biology workflows. Selection depends on workspace constraints and experimental diversity.
Dry Ice Compatibility
Some insulated cold storage systems are designed for use with dry ice, maintaining extremely low temperatures around –78 °C. These are used for short-term cryogenic handling, transport, or dispensing workflows where ultra-low temperature maintenance is required without active refrigeration.

Specifications Context

Modern gel-based benchtop coolers are engineered using phase-change materials that stabilize near 0 °C for several hours after being pre-conditioned at –20 °C. Dual-format systems have become increasingly common in molecular biology laboratories because they reduce the number of separate cooling devices required on the bench. As of 2026, these ice-free systems are widely adopted in PCR and nucleic acid workflows due to their consistency, cleanliness, and ease of use compared to traditional ice-based cooling methods.

Biohazard Bags

What are Biohazard Bags?

Biohazard bags are polyethylene pouches printed with the universal biohazard symbol and standardized warning text, used to contain, transport, and dispose of biological specimens and infectious waste in clinical, diagnostic, and research laboratory settings. They are manufactured in two functionally distinct categories: specimen transport bags (thin-walled LDPE, zipper-closure, with document pouch) for routing patient specimens from collection point to laboratory; and autoclave/waste bags (heavy-gauge polypropylene, heat-sealable) for containing infectious solid waste before steam sterilization at 121–136 °C. Choose a specimen transport bag for courier or inter-department specimen routing; choose an autoclave bag for infectious solid waste destined for steam sterilization.

How to Choose Biohazard Bags

Specimen Transport vs. Waste/Autoclave Function Specimen transport bags (Globe Scientific catalog 4923–4950) are LDPE, zipper-locked, with a separate document pouch for the requisition form and a tear zone for rapid opening at the receiving lab. They are not rated for autoclaving. Autoclave bags (PP, 0.05 mm, 12×26 in. or 24×32 in.) withstand 121–136 °C sterilization cycles and comply with OSHA 29 CFR 1910.1030 markings for biohazardous waste disposal. Size Selection for Specimen Transport Globe Scientific offers 6×9 in. (for blood tubes, urine cups, small specimens), 8×10 in. (for multiple tubes or swab collections), and 12×15 in. (for large containers, pathology specimens). The 6×9 in. bag with absorbent pad (catalog 4924) is the most common format for clinical specimen routing; the pad absorbs up to 10 mL of liquid in the event of tube breakage. Absorbent Pad Requirement IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations and the UN3373 Biological Substance Category B shipping requirements mandate an absorbent material sufficient to absorb the total liquid volume of the primary container. The 6×9 in. with absorbent pad format meets this requirement for standard tube shipments. Confirm pad absorbency against your primary container volume before use in P650 mailing kits. STAT vs. Standard Globe Scientific STAT bags (catalog 4950) are red-tinted 6×9 in. bags with a document pouch and tear zone — the red color alerts laboratory staff to prioritize the specimen. Use STAT bags for critical or time-sensitive specimens that bypass standard routing. Closure Type Zipper-closure bags allow repeated access and are used where the specimen may need to be resealed for courier transit. Glue-closure (tamper-evident seal) bags prevent re-opening and are preferred for chain-of-custody specimens (forensics, drug testing) and any application where tamper evidence is required.

Specifications Context

Globe Scientific specimen transport bags are manufactured from LDPE with a printed biohazard symbol and special handling checkboxes. The 6×9 in. standard format (catalog 4923) and STAT format (4950) hold cases of 1,000 bags (100/pack × 10 packs). The 8×10 in. (4926) and 12×15 in. (4929) formats are cases of 1,000 and 500, respectively. Autoclave bags used for infectious solid waste must comply with OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens Standard (29 CFR 1910.1030), which requires fluorescent orange or orange-red color-coding or a biohazard symbol on all containers holding regulated waste. Globe Scientific biohazard bags are manufactured under ISO 9001:2015 quality management standards. Bags are non-sterile; sterile transport systems for specimens requiring sterility assurance should use appropriately certified collection vessels inside the bag.

Centrifuge Tubes

What Are Centrifuge Tubes?

Centrifuge tubes are cylindrical laboratory containers with caps that are used to separate, pellet, and store biological or chemical samples through centrifugal force. They are commonly made from polypropylene (PP) or polystyrene (PS) and are available in sizes ranging from small 0.5 mL microtubes to larger 50 mL conical tubes. These tubes are widely used for cell pelleting, protein precipitation, DNA and RNA extraction, tissue homogenate clarification, and long-term sample storage. Depending on the material, they can withstand temperatures from −80 °C to +121 °C.
In short, the best centrifuge tube depends on your centrifuge rotor, required g-force, sample volume, and sterility needs.

How to Choose Centrifuge Tubes

Volume and Rotor Compatibility
Select a tube size that matches both your sample volume and centrifuge rotor. Microtubes ranging from 0.5–2 mL are commonly used in microcentrifuges and can typically handle speeds up to 20,000 × g. Midi tubes in the 5–10 mL range are suitable for intermediate sample volumes, while 15 mL and 50 mL conical tubes are commonly used in clinical, research, and preparative centrifuges.
Material: Polypropylene vs. Polystyrene
Polypropylene (PP) tubes offer excellent chemical resistance and can tolerate temperatures from −80 °C to +121 °C. They are suitable for autoclaving and exposure to many laboratory solvents. Polystyrene (PS) tubes provide superior optical clarity, making it easier to visually inspect samples and liquid levels, but they have lower resistance to solvents and extreme temperatures.
Sterility and Contamination Control
Sterile centrifuge tubes are typically gamma- or E-beam-irradiated and certified free of RNase, DNase, and pyrogens. These tubes are recommended for RNA extraction, cell culture, and clinical applications where contamination must be minimized. Non-sterile tubes may still be RNase- and DNase-free and are often suitable for routine DNA work and general sample storage.
Cap Design
Attached screw caps help prevent cap mix-ups and sample contamination, especially in high-throughput laboratories. Separate caps can be quicker to open and may be preferred in workflows that require frequent access to samples. If tubes will be used with automated systems, cap dimensions should be verified for compatibility with liquid handling equipment.
Packaging Options
Racked tubes provide convenient organization and allow direct pipetting while the tubes remain in the rack. Bulk-bagged tubes offer a more economical option for laboratories that process large volumes of samples and already have tube storage systems in place.

Comparing Common Centrifuge Tube Types

Microtubes (0.5–2 mL) are ideal for PCR preparation, microcentrifuge applications, and storage of small sample volumes. They can generally withstand centrifugal forces up to 20,000 × g.
Midi tubes (5–10 mL) are designed for intermediate sample volumes such as culture supernatants and can typically tolerate forces up to 16,000 × g.
Sterile 15 mL conical tubes are frequently used for cell pelleting, RNA extraction, and clinical sample processing, with typical ratings between 12,000 and 15,000 × g.
Sterile 50 mL conical tubes are commonly selected for larger-volume applications including tissue culture work, density gradient preparation, and large-scale sample processing.
Polystyrene conical tubes in 15 mL and 50 mL formats are often chosen when visual sample inspection is important and solvent exposure is minimal.

Specifications and Features

Polypropylene centrifuge tubes from Globe Scientific and Nest Scientific are manufactured from USP Class VI virgin resin and do not contain plasticizers or processing additives. Sterile products are typically irradiated to achieve a sterility assurance level (SAL) of 10⁻⁶. Most 15 mL tubes feature graduation marks at 1 mL intervals, while 50 mL tubes are usually graduated every 5 mL. MBP offers both bagged and racked centrifuge tube formats, including 15 mL and 50 mL conical tubes as well as smaller microtube and midi tube options.

Volume and Rotor Compatibility
Selecting the correct tube size is essential for safe and efficient centrifugation. Microtubes ranging from 0.5–2 mL are designed for microcentrifuges, while 5–10 mL midi tubes fit compatible benchtop centrifuge rotors. Larger 15 mL and 50 mL conical tubes are commonly used in clinical and research centrifuges. Always verify rotor compatibility before introducing a new tube format into your workflow.
Sterility Requirements
For sensitive applications such as RNA extraction, cell culture, and clinical diagnostics, sterile tubes certified free of RNase, DNase, and pyrogens are recommended. Non-sterile tubes can provide a cost-effective solution for routine DNA analysis, protein assays, and general sample storage where sterility is not critical.
Material Selection
Polypropylene tubes offer excellent durability, can be autoclaved at 121 °C, and resist many laboratory chemicals and solvents. Polystyrene tubes provide superior transparency, making it easier to monitor liquid levels and sample contents, although they are less resistant to heat and solvents.
Packaging and Inventory Planning
Microtubes are commonly available in pack sizes ranging from 500 to 1,000 units, while 15 mL and 50 mL conical tubes are often supplied in cases of 500. Laboratories with consistent usage may benefit from establishing recurring purchase orders to ensure uninterrupted supply.

How to Choose Microcentrifuge Tubes

Volume: 0.5 mL / 1.5 mL / 2.0 mL
0.5 mL tubes minimize dead volume for concentrated or precious samples and fit compact block heaters. 1.5 mL is the universal format compatible with virtually all microcentrifuge rotors, heating blocks, and automated liquid handlers. 2.0 mL provides extra headspace for vortex mixing and bead-based extraction protocols; the slightly wider diameter is also compatible with most 1.5 mL rotor slots.
Cap Style: Snap Cap vs Screw Cap
Snap-cap microcentrifuge tubes feature hinged lids that allow quick one-handed operation and are preferred for high-throughput laboratory workflows involving frequent pipetting.
Screw-cap tubes equipped with O-rings or sealing rings provide a hermetic seal capable of withstanding centrifugal forces up to 20,000 × g. These tubes are recommended for volatile reagents, repeated freeze-thaw cycles, and long-term storage at ultra-low temperatures. Laboratories requiring enhanced sample security often select screw-cap formats for valuable or irreplaceable specimens.
Standard vs Low-Binding Polypropylene
Standard polypropylene microcentrifuge tubes are suitable for most routine laboratory applications. Low-binding polypropylene tubes are designed to reduce sample adsorption to tube walls and are particularly beneficial when working with dilute proteins, low-concentration nucleic acids, or single-cell samples where maximizing recovery is critical.
Bottom Geometry: Conical vs Self-Standing
Conical-bottom tubes concentrate pellets at the tip of the tube, improving sample recovery and simplifying resuspension after centrifugation.
Self-standing tubes feature a flat base that allows them to remain upright without a rack, making them convenient for sample handling, labeling, and storage. While they offer greater bench-top convenience, pellets may form slightly off-center compared with traditional conical-bottom designs.

Filtered Pipette Tips

What Are Filtered Pipette Tips?

Filtered pipette tips contain a hydrophobic aerosol-barrier plug — polyethylene (PE) frit or cellulose — embedded inside the tip body, positioned to intercept aerosol and liquid that would otherwise travel up through the tip collar into the pipette barrel during dispensing or when handling volatile or splashing samples. The filter protects the pipette barrel from internal contamination (which requires costly professional decontamination) and protects samples from cross-contamination by previously deposited nucleic acids, proteins, or biohazardous material in the barrel. Filtered tips are the standard consumables for PCR and qPCR setup, RNA extraction, cDNA synthesis, working with radioactive or biohazardous agents, and any workflow where a single contaminated barrel could compromise a run or an experiment. Non-filtered tips remain appropriate for routine buffer, media, and reagent dispensing where cross-contamination through the barrel is not a concern. Use filtered tips for all nucleic acid work, PCR, and biohazardous samples; use standard tips for routine buffer and reagent dispensing.

How to Choose Filtered Pipette Tips

Filter Material: Polyethylene Frit vs Cellulose Hydrophobic PE frits are the most common and most studied aerosol-barrier material; they block liquid ingress reliably without absorbing sample material or releasing fibres. Cellulose filters are used in some barrier tips (including the original Thermo Barrier tips); they are effective aerosol barriers but can absorb a small volume of aqueous sample, relevant at ≤10 µL, where the absorbed volume is proportionally significant.
Universal Fit vs LTS-Compatible Filtered Tips Universal filtered tips use standard collar geometry (3.8 mm for ≤10 µL, 6.1 mm for ≤200 µL) and fit Eppendorf, Rainin Classic (non-LTS), and Thermo pipettes. LTS-compatible filtered tips use Rainin's cylindrical LTS mounting geometry and are required for Rainin LTS pipettes.
Low-Retention Filtered Tips Low-retention filtered tips combine an aerosol barrier with a hydrophobic inner tip wall, reducing liquid adhesion during dispensing. They are recommended for small-volume (≤10 µL) nucleic acid work, RNA, protein, and enzyme dispensing, where both contamination protection and volume accuracy are critical.
Volume Range Filtered tips are available across 10 µL (P2–P10), 20 µL (P20), 100 µL (P100), 200 µL (P200), 300 µL, 1,000 µL (P1000), and 1,250 µL extended formats. Extended-length filtered tips reach deep into 15 mL and 50 mL conical tubes for nucleic acid elution and sample transfer steps.
Packaging Filtered tips are typically sterile-racked (96/rack, 10 racks/box); reload/refill formats are available for high-volume filter tip users.

Specifications Context

Globe Scientific filter tips are certified free of human DNA, RNase, DNase, pyrogens, and PCR inhibitors; sterile, in flip-top or hinged racks. Sorenson Bioscience universal filter tips span 10–1,250 µL in standard rack and EcoRack reload formats, pre-sterilised, DNase/RNase-free. Invitrogen Barrier Tips (Thermo Fisher) are the original reference for nucleic acid work with cellulose filter elements; compatible with Eppendorf pipettes. Globe Scientific, Nest Scientific, and Sorenson Bioscience filtered tips are stocked by MBP Inc.

What Are Universal Fit Filter Tips?

Universal fit filter tips combine two well-established features: the standardised collar geometry of universal-fit tips (3.8 mm collar for ≤10 µL, 6.1 mm for ≤200 µL, ~7.5 mm for ≤1,000 µL) and an integrated hydrophobic PE aerosol-barrier frit inside the tip shaft. The collar geometry enables cross-brand compatibility; the PE frit physically blocks aerosol droplets and liquid from entering the pipette barrel when over-pipetting, vigorous mixing, or volatile samples are involved. They deliver contamination protection equivalent to brand-specific filter tips at a cost appropriate for labs standardising on universal consumables. Universal fit filter tips are the default contamination-control tip for any lab with a mixed Eppendorf/Gilson/Rainin fleet running PCR, RNA, or biohazardous protocols.

How to Choose Universal Fit Filter Tips

Filter Material: PE Frit vs Self-Sealing Barrier Standard PE frit filters (Globe Scientific, Sorenson Bioscience, Nest Scientific) are hydrophobic sintered polyethylene that blocks aerosol and liquid without absorbing sample material — the most broadly specified filter type. Self-sealing barrier tips (e.g., Thermo Scientific ART) use a swelling polymer that expands on contact with liquid to create a complete seal; they provide reliable protection but at a higher cost and from fewer suppliers. Low-Retention Universal Filter Tips Low-retention universal filter tips add a hydrophobic inner tip wall to the PE frit. Use them at ≤10 µL for RNA, enzyme aliquoting, and small-volume nucleic acid work where both contamination protection and maximum volume delivery accuracy are required. Volume Range 10 µL: P2–P10 range; sequencing gel loading, micro-volume PCR setup. 20 µL: P20 range. 100 µL: P100. 200 µL: P200 — the highest-volume filter tip in most labs. 300 µL: for some extended P300 pipettes. 1,000 µL: P1000. 1,250 µL: extended high-volume format. Extended-Length Filter Tips Extended-length universal filter tips (200 µL and 1,000 µL) are 20–40 mm longer than standard, enabling aerosol-protected access to the bottom of 15 mL and 50 mL conical tubes during nucleic acid elution and sample transfer steps. Packaging Universal filter tips are typically sterile-racked (96/rack × 10 racks/box). Sorenson EcoRack reload inserts are available for high-volume filter tip users seeking plastic waste reduction.

Specifications Context

Universal fit filter tips are certified DNase-free, RNase-free, human DNA-free, ATP-free, pyrogen-free, and PCR inhibitor-free per independent lot. Virgin polypropylene construction; PE frits are hydrophobic, sintered polyethylene confirmed PCR inhibitor-free. Sterile racked tips are EO-sterilised or gamma-irradiated to SAL 10⁻³–10⁻⁶. Thermo Scientific ART universal filter tips use a proprietary self-sealing barrier; Globe Scientific and Sorenson Bioscience use PE frits. Sorenson Bioscience universal filter tips in standard rack and EcoRack reload formats are stocked by MBP Inc.

Pipette Tips

What Are Pipette Tips?

Pipette tips are disposable polypropylene cones that attach to the shaft of an air-displacement pipette, forming the liquid-contact surface for aspiration and dispensing. The seal between the tip collar and the pipette shaft is the single most important factor in volumetric accuracy; a poorly fitting tip introduces systematic volume error that causes the instrument to deviate from its calibrated specification. Tips span micro volumes (0.1–10 µL) through standard (20–200 µL and 100–1,000 µL) to high-volume (up to 1,250 µL), with variants for filtered aerosol protection, low-retention liquid release, extended reach into deep vessels, and wide-bore dispensing of viscous samples.

How to Choose Pipette Tips

Collar Size and Pipette Compatibility Tip collar diameter determines fit: 3.8 mm collar for ≤10 µL pipettes; 6.1 mm collar for ≤200 µL; approximately 7.5–8.0 mm collar for P1000 pipettes. Universal fit tips use these standard collar sizes and are compatible with Eppendorf Research, Rainin Classic (non-LTS), Thermo Finnpipette, and Sartorius/BioHit. Rainin LTS and Eppendorf epT.I.P.S. use proprietary collar geometry and require instrument-specific tips. Filtered vs Non-Filtered Aerosol-barrier filter tips contain a hydrophobic PE or cellulose plug that blocks aerosol and liquid from reaching the pipette barrel; required for PCR, qPCR, and RT-PCR setup, RNA extraction, and work with biohazardous samples. Non-filter standard tips are appropriate for buffer, media, and reagent dispensing where cross-contamination through the barrel is not a concern. Low-Retention vs Standard Polypropylene Low-retention tips are injection-moulded from hydrophobic polypropylene with reduced surface energy or coated to minimise liquid adhesion on the inner wall. They improve accuracy at ≤10 µL and for dispensing viscous, protein-containing, or organic solvent samples. Standard PP tips leave small residual volumes in the tip after dispensing; this residue is negligible at 200 µL but significant at 2–5 µL. Extended-Length and Wide-Bore Extended-length tips (also called long tips or gel-loading tips) reach into deep 15 mL and 50 mL tubes, cryovials, and electrophoresis gel wells. Wide-bore tips have an enlarged aperture for dispensing viscous samples, cell suspensions, and tissue lysates without shearing. Packaging Format Hinged 96-tip racks are standard for manual pipetting. Reload inserts fit into reusable rack bases to reduce per-tip cost and plastic waste. Bulk bags provide the lowest cost per tip for non-sterile applications.

Specifications Context

Pipette tips are certified DNase-free, RNase-free, ATP-free, human DNA-free, PCR inhibitor-free, and pyrogen-free per independent lot testing. Virgin polypropylene free of additives, antistatic agents, and dyes is the standard material. ISO 8655 compliance for the pipette system depends on tip-pipette seal quality; confirm tip compatibility with your specific pipette model. Sorenson Bioscience universal and filtered tips, Globe Scientific, and Nest Scientific lines are stocked by MBP Inc.

What Are Universal Fit Pipette Tips?

Universal fit pipette tips use collar diameters standardised across most major air-displacement pipette brands, allowing a single tip product to seat on pipettes from multiple manufacturers. The three primary collar sizes are: 3.8 mm for ≤10 µL tips, 6.1 mm for ≤200 µL tips, and approximately 7.5–8.0 mm for P1000 tips. These collar sizes cover Eppendorf Research Plus, Rainin Classic (non-LTS), Thermo Finnpipette, Sartorius/BioHit, and VWR pipettes. Universal fit tips cover most lab pipettes at a lower cost per tip — the exception is Rainin LTS, which needs dedicated LTS tips.

How to Choose Universal Fit Pipette Tips

Volume Range: Match Tip to Pipette 10 µL universal tips (3.8 mm collar) cover 0.1–10 µL single-channel pipettes and the P10 range. 200 µL universal tips (6.1 mm collar) cover P20, P50, P100, and P200 pipettes. 1,000 µL universal tips cover P1000 pipettes and are available in standard-length and extended-length formats. 1,250 µL macro universal tips accommodate high-volume dispensing steps in the 1,000–1,250 µL range. Standard vs Filtered Universal Tips Standard universal tips are sufficient for buffer, media, and reagent dispensing. Filtered universal tips — with hydrophobic PE or cellulose aerosol barrier — are required for PCR setup, RNA work, and any contamination-sensitive application. Using filtered tips universally reduces contamination risk in shared pipettes at the cost of approximately 1.5–2× the price of standard tips. Low-Retention Universal Tips Low-retention universal tips minimise residual volume on the inner tip wall. This matters at ≤10 µL, where standard tips may retain 0.2–0.5 µL, creating a systematic under-delivery error. Sorenson's universal low-retention tips maintain compatibility with all major standard-collar pipettes. Packaging Format Racked (hinged 96-tip rack): standard for manual pipetting. Reload inserts: drop into reusable rack bases; 20–30% lower per-tip cost and reduced plastic. Bulk (non-sterile bag): lowest cost per tip for non-sterile buffer/media work. Sterile racked tips are required for cell culture, RNA, and clean applications. OneTouch / Ergonomic Formats OneTouch reload formats allow the full tip insert to be loaded into the pipette simultaneously, reducing repetitive-strain impact from individual tip-loading in high-throughput workflows.

Specifications Context

Universal fit tips are manufactured from 100% virgin polypropylene, certified DNase-free, RNase-free, ATP-free, human DNA-free, pyrogen-free, and PCR inhibitor-free per lot. Sorenson Bioscience universal tips are manufactured in a Class 100,000 cleanroom, pre-sterilised, and sold through MBP Inc. in standard racks, EcoRack reloads, and bulk formats. Universal fit tips remain the highest-volume tip category in North American research labs due to multi-brand compatibility and lower cost per tip versus pipette-specific variants.
If you’re setting up a workflow or mixing pipette brands in the same lab, it’s usually worth sorting tip compatibility early — it removes a lot of small daily friction that adds up over time. Contact the MBP team to get a tailored quote!

Universal Fit Pipette Tips

What Are Bulk & Racked Pipette Tips?

Racked pipette tips are pre-loaded into a 96-position hinged polypropylene rack (8 rows × 12 columns), matched to standard single-channel and 8-channel multichannel pipette workflows. Bulk tips are supplied as loose tips in resealable bags of 500–1,000 or more, intended for self-loading into existing rack frames or bulk-bag dispensers. For labs that discard full racks after each use, bulk bags offer a significant reduction in per-tip cost; for labs requiring sterile, pre-organised tips, hinged racks are the standard. Choose racked tips for sterile/organised workflows; choose bulk bags when sterility is not required and cost per tip is the primary driver.

How to Choose Between Bulk and Racked Formats

Sterility Requirements Racked tips are available pre-sterilised (EO or gamma) and are individually certified DNase-free, RNase-free, ATP-free, human DNA-free, and PCR inhibitor-free per lot — required for cell culture, PCR setup, RNA work, and any sterility-sensitive application. Bulk bag tips are typically non-sterile; they can be autoclaved by the user at 121°C (15 psi, 15 min) before use if sterility is needed, though autoclaving adds handling time. Throughput and Format Racked 96-tip formats support 8-channel multichannel pipetting with aligned well positions. Bulk bags are efficient for single-channel repetitive dispensing where tips are picked individually. For high-throughput multichannel workflows, the Refill Station (reload insert) format combines the alignment benefits of a rack with the lower cost of bulk supply. Volume Range 10 µL tips: for P2, P10 single-channel pipettes, microvolume dispensing, sequencing gel loading. 200 µL tips: the highest-volume format in most research labs — P20, P100, P200 range. 1,000 µL / 1,250 µL tips: for P1000 pipettes; available in standard and extended-length formats for deep-tube access. Standard-length tips suit standard Eppendorf and Falcon tubes; extended-length tips reach 15 mL and 50 mL conical tube bottoms. Autoclavable Racks Polypropylene hinged racks withstand repeated autoclave cycles at 121°C without dimensional distortion. Confirm the rack material is PP (not polystyrene) before autoclaving — PS racks deform under steam sterilisation. Pack Sizes and Case Economics Standard racked packs: 96 tips/rack × 10 racks/box × 10 boxes/case = 9,600 tips/case for 200 µL format. Bulk bags: 500 or 1,000 tips/bag; cases of 10 bags = 5,000–10,000 tips at significantly lower cost per tip.

Specifications Context

Cover Glass

What Is Cover Glass?

Cover glass (also called coverslips or cover slips) are ultra-thin glass slips placed over a specimen mounted on a microscope slide. They may be rectangular, square, or circular depending on the application. Their main function is to protect the specimen from contamination and physical damage while also creating a uniform optical surface for high-quality imaging.
A critical factor in cover glass selection is thickness, since microscope objectives are optically corrected for specific coverslip standards. The two most common grades are No. 1 (nominal 150 µm, range 130–170 µm) and No. 1.5 (nominal 175 µm, ±15 µm). In most modern microscopy systems, No. 1.5 cover glass is preferred, especially for high-numerical aperture (high-NA) objectives used in fluorescence and confocal microscopy. Using the wrong thickness can introduce spherical aberration and reduce image sharpness.

How to Choose Cover Glass

Thickness: No. 1 vs No. 1.5
No. 1.5 cover glass (175 µm nominal) is the standard choice for most modern objectives because it matches the optical correction of high-NA lenses used in advanced imaging. No. 1 cover glass (150 µm nominal) should only be used when the microscope objective is specifically designed or labeled for that thickness. Mismatching cover glass thickness and objective correction leads to image distortion and reduced resolution, particularly at higher magnifications.
Shape: Square, Rectangular, or Circular
Square coverslips (commonly 18 × 18 mm or 22 × 22 mm) are used for routine microscopy and tissue sectioning. Rectangular coverslips (such as 24 × 50 mm or 24 × 60 mm) are preferred for larger specimens like extended tissue sections or blood smears. Circular coverslips are used in specialized applications such as glass-bottom culture dishes and live-cell imaging systems.
Surface Quality: Standard vs Pre-Cleaned vs Low-Autofluorescence
Standard cover glass may require cleaning before use, while pre-cleaned coverslips are ready for immediate mounting and help reduce particulate artifacts that interfere with imaging. For fluorescence and advanced imaging applications, low-autofluorescence or precision-grade cover glass is preferred because it reduces background signal and improves contrast and signal-to-noise ratio.
Quantity and Packaging
Cover glass is typically supplied in packs based on count or weight, with common packaging sizes ranging from 100 to 500 pieces per box. High-throughput laboratories often purchase in case quantities for cost efficiency and consistent supply management. MBP can assist with selecting appropriate pack sizes based on laboratory workflow and volume requirements.

Specifications Context

Cover glass thickness is defined by industry standards rather than exact uniform measurement: No. 1 typically ranges from 130–170 µm (nominal 150 µm), while No. 1.5 typically ranges from 160–190 µm (nominal 175 µm). High-precision No. 1.5H cover glass offers tighter tolerances (approximately ±5 µm) and is used in high-resolution confocal and super-resolution microscopy where optical consistency is critical. Standard borosilicate cover glass has a refractive index of approximately 1.515–1.523, which matches the correction assumptions of most microscope objectives.

Plain

What Are Plain Microscope Slides?

Plain microscope slides are flat, untreated glass surfaces in the standard 25×75 mm format, approximately 1 mm thick, with no frosted end, no labeling surface, and no surface coating. They are the default slide for routine laboratory microscopy where specimen labeling is managed separately through adhesive labels, slide label printers, or laboratory information systems. Globe Scientific Diamond White Glass plain slides are pre-cleaned and manufactured under ISO 9001:2015 standards. Choose plain slides for high-volume routine applications such as H&E staining, Gram staining, and blood smear preparation where cost per slide is important and specimen identification is managed through a separate labeling system.

How to Choose Plain Microscope Slides

Plain vs. Frosted: When Each Applies
Plain slides are a cost-effective option for laboratories that use adhesive barcode labels, LIS-generated labels, or external specimen-tracking systems. Frosted-end slides are better suited to workflows where technicians write directly on the slide using pencil or permanent marker. Laboratories using both automated and manual labeling systems often keep both plain and frosted slides in stock.
Edge Style: 90° Ground vs. Beveled
Slides with 90° ground edges are the standard choice for manual handling and compatibility with most staining racks. Beveled-edge slides feature 45° safety corners that help reduce cut risk during handling and are often preferred for automated slide printers and slide-loading systems.
Glass Grade and Optical Quality
Globe Scientific Diamond White Glass plain slides are manufactured from optical-quality glass that offers higher light transmission than standard soda-lime glass. This helps reduce background color tint and improve image clarity in brightfield microscopy. Pre-cleaned slides also minimize particulate contamination that can appear as unwanted artifacts during microscopic examination.
Packaging: Box vs. Bulk Case
Plain slides are typically packaged 72 per box and are also available in bulk cases of 1,440 slides. Bulk purchasing reduces per-slide cost and minimizes reordering requirements for high-volume laboratories.

Specifications Context

Globe Scientific Diamond White Glass plain microscope slides are 25×75 mm, approximately 1 mm thick, manufactured from optical-quality glass and supplied pre-cleaned. They are available with either 90° ground edges or 45° beveled safety corners. Because plain slides have no surface charge or coating, they are suitable for routine wet mounts, dried smears, cryosection placement, and standard staining procedures where enhanced tissue adhesion is not required. For immunohistochemistry (IHC), heat-induced antigen retrieval (HIER), or frozen section applications, positively charged slides are recommended. MBP stocks plain microscope slides in both standard and bulk case quantities.

Color Coded

What Are Color-Coded Microscope Slides?

Color-coded microscope slides are standard 25 × 75 mm glass slides with a permanently tinted frosted end in a specific color, such as blue, green, pink, yellow, white, or orange at MBP. Additional colors, including aqua, red, and lavender, are also available in the Globe Scientific Diamond White Glass range. The color is embedded directly into the frosted-end material, making it chemically resistant and stable through common histology processing steps such as alcohol dehydration, xylene clearing, and aqueous staining.
These slides are used to improve workflow organization by preventing sample mix-ups and allowing rapid visual identification of specimen batches, tissue types, or staining runs.

Frosted End: Standard vs Color-Coded
Standard frosted-end slides provide a plain writable surface for pencil or marker labeling. Color-coded frosted slides add a visible color layer on the frosted end, making it easier to identify samples from a distance or during high-throughput workflow conditions such as staining or sorting. Both versions are supplied as Globe Scientific Diamond White Glass slides, pre-cleaned and ready to use.
Workflow-Based Color Assignment
Colors can be assigned based on laboratory workflow requirements, such as separating tissue types, patient batches, or staining protocols. For example, some laboratories use blue for routine H&E cases, yellow for cytology specimens, and pink for special stains. The key requirement is consistency—once a color is assigned to a category, it should remain fixed to avoid identification errors. In high-volume labs processing large numbers of slides per day, color coding significantly reduces manual sorting time compared with reading individual labels.
Glass Quality and Physical Specifications
All MBP color-coded slides are manufactured from Globe Scientific Diamond White Glass under ISO 9001:2015 quality standards. They are supplied pre-cleaned and require no additional washing before use. Standard dimensions are 25 × 75 mm with approximately 1 mm thickness. Edge options include 90° ground edges or 45° beveled safety corners depending on handling preference and safety requirements.
Packaging and Ordering
Color-coded microscope slides are typically packaged in boxes of 72 slides. Case quantities are available for institutional and high-volume laboratory purchasing. Because availability may vary by color, labs are advised to confirm stock before placing bulk or purchase order (PO) requests.
