Edwards Pumps

What are Edwards vacuum pumps?

These leading global vacuum technologies offer a broad range of laboratory and industrial systems. The lineup includes single-stage oil-sealed rotary vane pumps for standard workflows, robust two-stage rotary vane pumps for deeper vacuum and higher throughput, and advanced dry scroll pump series for completely oil-free operation. These systems are widely specified by analytical instrument manufacturers as the required or recommended roughing pump for mass spectrometers, electron microscopes, and other high-vacuum instruments requiring reliable rough vacuum.

How to choose an Edwards vacuum pump

Choose the RV series for oil-sealed single-stage deep roughing vacuum
The Edwards RV series (RV3, RV5, RV8, RV12) are single-stage oil-sealed rotary vane pumps achieving ultimate vacuum levels of approximately 0.001–0.005 mbar with pumping speeds from 3 to 12 m³/h, covering the roughing vacuum requirements of most analytical instruments from small benchtop mass spectrometers to larger research instruments.
Choose the E2M series for two-stage deep vacuum and higher throughput
The Edwards E2M series provides two-stage oil-sealed rotary vane pumping with deeper ultimate vacuum than single-stage models, reaching approximately 0.00015 mbar, and higher pumping speeds for larger instruments or applications requiring faster pump-down times.
Choose the nXDS dry scroll pump for oil-free analytical instrument backing
The Edwards nXDS series (nXDS-6i, nXDS-10i, nXDS-15i) are dry scroll pumps providing oil-free roughing vacuum to approximately 0.07 mbar ultimate vacuum, positioned as oil-free alternatives to the RV series for analytical instruments where oil contamination risk must be eliminated, similar in function to the Agilent IDP series.
Confirm Edwards pump compatibility with your instrument's specifications
Many analytical instrument manufacturers specify Edwards pump models by series and model number in their installation guides, and using the specified model ensures compatibility with the instrument's vacuum system connections, flow requirements, and expected pump-down time. Using a pump of insufficient pumping speed can prevent an instrument from reaching operating vacuum within the expected time.
Plan for oil maintenance requirements of oil-sealed RV and E2M models
RV and E2M series pumps require regular oil changes using Edwards-specified Ultragrade pump oil, with oil condition monitoring recommended and oil change intervals dependent on the application's chemical exposure and operating cycle. A cold trap upstream prevents solvent vapor from contaminating the oil and shortening oil life.

Specifications context

Edwards RV series rotary vane pumps achieve their deep ultimate vacuum using a two-gas-ballast system that can be opened to purge condensable vapors from the oil during pump operation, reducing the rate of oil contamination when operating in humid environments or when small amounts of condensable vapors are present. As of 2026, Edwards RV and nXDS pumps remain among the most widely specified roughing pump series for analytical instrument installations, with the nXDS gaining adoption as an oil-free alternative to the RV for new installations where oil-free operation is preferred.
