For rotor-stator homogenizers, the critical accessories are the generator head and dispersing tool (the probe tip with rotating blade inside a stator tube), available in different sizes to match different sample volumes. Match the generator head size to your sample volume

Check ultrasonic probe tip diameter against the sample vessel and volume
Ultrasonic probe homogenizer tips are available in standard (12.7–19 mm) and micro (3–6 mm) diameters, with the micro-tip providing higher acoustic intensity for small volumes and the standard tip covering larger volumes. The tip diameter should be approximately 1/4 to 1/3 of the diameter of the sample container for effective cavitation throughout the sample.
Replace ultrasonic probe tips before pitting becomes severe
Ultrasonic probe tips erode at the vibrating face through cavitation, and a pitted tip delivers less energy, generates metal particles contaminating the sample, and risks mechanical failure. Inspect the tip face regularly for pitting and replace at the first signs of significant erosion to maintain energy delivery.
Use a water-jacketed vessel for temperature-sensitive samples
Water-jacketed homogenization vessels circulate cold water around the sample vessel during homogenization, limiting the temperature rise in the sample from frictional and ultrasonic heating. This is particularly important for enzyme preparations, RNA isolation, and other applications where sample heating above a few degrees above ambient can cause degradation.
Invest in a probe cleaning station for high-throughput work
Probe cleaning stations hold cleaning and rinse solutions in sequence for rapid cleaning between samples, reducing cleaning time and ensuring consistent decontamination in labs processing many samples per session compared with manual cleaning.
Ultrasonic probe tip replacement is a consumable cost, with tip lifespan typically 50–200 hours before pitting degrades performance. Manufacturers specify replacement tip models compatible with each horn assembly; non-specified tips risk poor energy coupling or damage. Titanium alloy probe tips remain the standard material for their combination of acoustic properties, corrosion resistance, and fatigue resistance under repeated ultrasonic cycling.
