The most common type is the bouffant cap, which provides full coverage using a gathered, elasticated design made from non-woven polypropylene.

How to Choose Laboratory Caps and Hair Covers

Size selection
Cap sizes are measured by fully-stretched elastic band diameter: 21 inches covers most personnel with short to medium hair; 24 inches accommodates long, thick, or high-volume hair; 28 inches suits very high-volume hair, dreadlocks, or wrapped hair styles. The 21-inch format is the most widely stocked and cost-effective default for mixed-workforce labs. Over-sizing increases the risk of the cap slipping and exposing hair during a shift; under-sizing causes discomfort and reduces compliance.
 
Material and barrier rating
Standard non-woven spunbond PP bouffant caps at 40 gsm are appropriate for ISO 7 (Class 10,000) environments covering the majority of research, academic, clinical, and pharmaceutical lab settings. SMS caps with a meltblown middle layer provide enhanced aerosol and droplet barrier for pharmaceutical cleanrooms and controlled environments requiring higher barrier performance. Confirm the product's documented ISO classification or particle generation test data when sourcing for validated or GMP-regulated environments.
 
Latex-free elastic
Quality-tier bouffant caps use latex-free pleated elastic bands that provide uniform tension across different head shapes without latex allergen exposure. Pleated (gathered) elastic distributes pressure evenly and reduces the headband discomfort of non-pleated alternatives during long wear sessions. Confirm latex-free elastic in the product CoA for environments with latex allergy protocols.
 
Case quantity
Bouffant caps are typically supplied in 1,000-piece cases (100 per bag, 10 bags) for easy floor stock management.
