Filtered Pipette Tips for Aerosol Contamination Control

Filtered pipette tips contain a hydrophobic polyethylene or cellulose plug positioned inside the tip shaft that blocks aerosol droplets and liquid from reaching the pipette barrel during aspiration and dispensing — providing contamination protection required for PCR and qPCR setup, RNA handling, biohazardous sample work, and any workflow where cross-sample or cross-run contamination would compromise results. Available in universal fit (compatible with Eppendorf, Rainin Classic, and most standard pipettes) and LTS-compatible formats, across volumes from 10 µL to 1,250 µL.

MBP Inc. stocks filtered pipette tips from Globe Scientific, Sorenson Bioscience, and Nest Scientific — pre-sterilised, DNase/RNase-free — for labs across the USA and Canada. Contact customerservice@mbpinc.net  to request a quote today!

What Are Filtered Pipette Tips?

Filtered pipette tips contain a hydrophobic aerosol-barrier plug — polyethylene (PE) frit or cellulose — embedded inside the tip body, positioned to intercept aerosol and liquid that would otherwise travel up through the tip collar into the pipette barrel during dispensing or when handling volatile or splashing samples. The filter protects the pipette barrel from internal contamination (which requires costly professional decontamination) and protects samples from cross-contamination by previously deposited nucleic acids, proteins, or biohazardous material in the barrel. Filtered tips are the standard consumables for PCR and qPCR setup, RNA extraction, cDNA synthesis, working with radioactive or biohazardous agents, and any workflow where a single contaminated barrel could compromise a run or an experiment. Non-filtered tips remain appropriate for routine buffer, media, and reagent dispensing where cross-contamination through the barrel is not a concern. Use filtered tips for all nucleic acid work, PCR, and biohazardous samples; use standard tips for routine buffer and reagent dispensing.

What you will find:

How to Choose Filtered Pipette Tips

Filter Material: Polyethylene Frit vs Cellulose
Hydrophobic PE frits are the most common and most studied aerosol-barrier material; they block liquid ingress reliably without absorbing sample material or releasing fibres. Cellulose filters are used in some barrier tips (including the original Thermo Barrier tips); they are effective aerosol barriers but can absorb a small volume of aqueous sample, relevant at ≤10 µL, where the absorbed volume is proportionally significant.

Universal Fit vs LTS-Compatible Filtered Tips
Universal filtered tips use standard collar geometry (3.8 mm for ≤10 µL, 6.1 mm for ≤200 µL) and fit Eppendorf, Rainin Classic (non-LTS), Thermo pipettes. LTS-compatible filtered tips use Rainin's cylindrical LTS mounting geometry and are required for Rainin LTS pipettes.
Low-Retention Filtered Tips
Low-retention filtered tips combine an aerosol barrier with a hydrophobic inner tip wall, reducing liquid adhesion during dispensing. They are recommended for small-volume (≤10 µL) nucleic acid work, RNA, protein, and enzyme dispensing, where both contamination protection and volume accuracy are critical.

Volume Range
Filtered tips are available across 10 µL (P2–P10), 20 µL (P20), 100 µL (P100), 200 µL (P200), 300 µL, 1,000 µL (P1000), and 1,250 µL extended formats. Extended-length filtered tips reach deep into 15 mL and 50 mL conical tubes for nucleic acid elution and sample transfer steps.

Packaging
Filtered tips are typically sterile-racked (96/rack, 10 racks/box); reload/refill formats are available for high-volume filter tip users.

FAQ

Filtered pipette tips contain a hydrophobic aerosol-barrier plug (polyethylene frit or cellulose) that blocks aerosol droplets and liquid from travelling up the tip collar into the pipette barrel. They protect the pipette barrel from internal contamination and protect samples from cross-contamination by nucleic acids, proteins, or biohazardous material previously deposited in the barrel.
Filtered tips are required for PCR and qPCR reaction setup, RNA extraction and handling, cDNA synthesis, working with biohazardous or infectious agents, and any application where aerosol or liquid entering the pipette barrel would contaminate subsequent samples or compromise experimental integrity. For routine buffer and reagent dispensing, standard non-filtered tips are sufficient.
Hydrophobic PE frits block aerosol and liquid without absorbing sample material or releasing fibres — the preferred filter material for most molecular biology applications. Cellulose filters (used in Invitrogen Barrier Tips) are effective aerosol barriers but can absorb a small volume of aqueous sample, which matters at ≤10 µL where absorbed volume is proportionally significant relative to the dispensed volume.
LTS-compatible filter tips with aerosol-barrier elements are available for Rainin LTS single-channel and multichannel pipettes. They use the LTS cylindrical mounting geometry and are required for LTS instruments; universal-fit filtered tips with conical collars do not seal correctly on LTS pipettes. MBP stocks LTS-compatible filter tips — see the LTS Compatible Filter Tips page.
Filtered universal fit tips are available in 10 µL, 20 µL, 100 µL, 200 µL, 300 µL, 1,000 µL, and 1,250 µL extended-length formats. LTS-compatible filtered tips are available from approximately 20 µL through 1,200 µL, depending on the supplier.
Filtered pipette tips from Globe Scientific, Sorenson Bioscience, and Nest Scientific stocked by MBP Inc. are pre-sterilised and certified DNase-free, RNase-free, human DNA-free, pyrogen-free, and PCR inhibitor-free per independent lot testing — essential for nucleic acid and contamination-sensitive workflows.
Low-retention filtered tips combine an aerosol-barrier filter with a hydrophobic inner tip wall that minimises liquid adhesion during dispensing. They are the optimal choice for small-volume nucleic acid work (≤10 µL), RNA dispensing, enzyme aliquoting, and protein transfer where both contamination protection and maximum volume recovery are needed.
Filtered pipette tips should not be autoclaved — the heat and moisture of steam sterilisation can degrade the filter element, compromise its aerosol-barrier function, and potentially deform the thin polypropylene tip body. Filtered tips are supplied pre-sterilised by EO or gamma irradiation and should be used directly from the sterile packaging.
Extended-length filtered tips in 200 µL and 1,000 µL formats reach 20–40 mm deeper than standard tips, enabling access to the bottom of 15 mL and 50 mL conical tubes for nucleic acid elution, sample transfer, and deep-vessel applications while maintaining aerosol protection.
