Labeling Tape for Sample Storage and Workflow Management

Labeling tape for laboratories is a pressure-sensitive adhesive tape manufactured to adhere to glass, plastic, and metal surfaces under conditions including chemical exposure, low temperatures, and repeated handling. Available widths range from 0.5 inch to 2 inches, with rolls typically 55 yards long, in a range of colors for sample-set color-coding and hazard classification.

MBP stocks Globe Scientific labeling tape and compatible formats for US and Canadian lab accounts, with direct access for registered vendor institutions. Contact customerservice@mbpinc.net to request a quote today!

What Is Laboratory Labeling Tape?

Laboratory labeling tape is a pressure-sensitive, hand-tearable adhesive tape used to identify tubes, racks, reagent bottles, storage boxes, and equipment in research and clinical lab settings. Unlike office tape, lab labeling tape is formulated to resist moisture, short-term chemical splashes, and low temperatures down to approximately −20 °C, while remaining writable with ball-point pen, pencil, or solvent-resistant markers. It is distinct from cryogenic labels (which handle −196 °C) and autoclave tape (which survives steam sterilization). Choose labeling tape for general color-coding and short-to-medium-term identification; choose cryogenic labels for any sample stored below −20 °C.

What you will find:

  • Multi-color adhesive rolls for quick visual categorization.
  • Solvent-resistant tape for harsh chemical environments.

  • Autoclave-safe indicator tape for verifying sterilization.

  • Moisture-proof rolls for refrigerator and freezer storage.

  • High-visibility marking tape for workstation safety.

  • Easy-tear laboratory tape for fast application.

How to Choose Laboratory Labeling Tape

Width
Standard widths are 0.5 inch (12 mm), 0.75 inch (19 mm), and 1 inch (25 mm). The 0.75-inch width suits 1.5–2 mL microcentrifuge tubes and most freezer-box sidewalls. 0.5-inch tape fits PCR strip tubes and narrow surfaces. 1-inch or wider tape is used for storage boxes, rack fronts, and equipment panels.

Color Selection
Labeling tape is available in 10 or more colors including white, yellow, blue, red, green, orange, and pink. Color-coding is commonly used to separate experimental groups, hazard classifications, personnel ownership, and sample collection dates. White tape provides the best legibility for handwritten alphanumeric labels.

Writability and Marker Compatibility
Tape surfaces should accept ballpoint pen, pencil, and Sharpie-style permanent markers without bleed-through or smearing. For autoclave use, select tape specifically rated for steam sterilization — standard labeling tape adhesive will not hold through 121 °C cycles.

Roll Length and Core Size
Standard rolls are 55 yards (50 m) on a 1-inch core, compatible with bench-top tape dispensers. Confirm dispenser core size before purchasing in bulk. Globe Scientific labeling tape rolls sold through MBP are confirmed to fit standard lab dispensers.

Temperature Range
General-purpose labeling tape is rated for use from approximately −20 °C to room temperature. For −80 °C freezer or cryogenic storage, use cryogenic labels rated to −196 °C from the [Cryogenic Labels](https://mbpinc.net/consumables/labels-tapes-and-printer-paper/cryogenic-labels) collection.

Specifications Context

Lab labeling tape rolls are typically 55 yards (50 m) in length on a 1-inch inner-diameter core. Adhesive backing is acrylic-based on most general-purpose formats, providing repositionability for short-term use and moderate permanent adhesion after 24 hours. Tape face material is usually cellulose or polyethylene-coated paper. For chemical-resistance requirements (solvent splashes, frequent wiping), specify vinyl or polyester tape facestock.

FAQ

General-purpose lab labeling tape is rated for approximately −20 °C to ambient temperature. At −20 °C freezer conditions, standard adhesive maintains adhesion on plastic and glass surfaces; however, below −20 °C the adhesive becomes brittle and fails. For −80 °C ultra-low freezers or liquid nitrogen storage at −196 °C, use cryogenic-rated labels with an acrylic cryogenic adhesive.
The 0.75-inch (19 mm) width is the most frequently specified for 1.5 mL and 2.0 mL microcentrifuge tubes and freezer box sidewalls. Narrower 0.5-inch tape fits PCR strip tubes and cryo vial caps; 1-inch and wider tape is used for storage boxes, rack identification, and equipment panels. MBP stocks multiple widths — confirm current availability via Quick Order or direct inquiry.
Most white-faced and colored lab labeling tapes accept permanent markers (Sharpie, Staedtler, and equivalent brands), ballpoint pens, and pencils without significant bleed or smearing when the marker is allowed to dry. Solvent-based permanent markers adhere best; water-based gel pens may smear on polyethylene-coated tape surfaces.
Standard general-purpose labeling tape is NOT autoclave-safe and will fail or leave residue at 121 °C steam sterilization conditions. Autoclave indicator tape is a separate product formulated specifically for steam sterilization cycles — it typically incorporates a chemical indicator stripe that changes color when correct time and temperature are reached.
A 55-yard (50 m) roll at 0.75-inch width provides roughly 2,200 linear inches of tape, which equates to approximately 2,200 individual 1-inch tube labels or proportionally fewer for longer labeling strips. In a high-throughput research lab processing 200–500 tubes per week, a roll typically lasts 2–4 weeks. Purchasing in case quantities reduces per-roll cost.
MBP carries tape dispensers in the [Tape Dispenser](https://mbpinc.net/consumables/labels-tapes-and-printer-paper/tape-dispenser) sub-category, designed for 1-inch core rolls consistent with the labeling tape roll format. A dispenser on the bench reduces handling time and prevents roll contamination — relevant in sterile or BSL-2 environments where minimizing contact is important.
Lab labeling tape is typically available in 8–12 colors: white, yellow, blue, red, green, orange, pink, lavender, and sometimes teal or brown, depending on the product line. White is the standard for written labels; colored tapes are used for group or personnel color-coding systems. MBP's current color availability can be confirmed via the Quick Order tool or direct inquiry.
General-purpose lab labeling tape with an acrylic adhesive adheres to clean, dry glass surfaces including bottles, flasks, beakers, and slide boxes. Adhesion is reduced on silicone-coated, frosted, or wet glass — allow surfaces to dry fully before application. For glass that will be autoclaved or solvent-washed, autoclave tape or a waterproof label format is required.
