Internal Thread Cryogenic Vials with Leak-Proof O-Ring Seal

Internally threaded cryogenic vials have screw threads inside the cap neck with a silicone O-ring that compresses against the vial rim to create a positive leak-proof seal rated to 90 kPa. The recessed thread design eliminates exposed external grooves during cap removal, reducing contamination risk to the sealing surface in biosafety cabinets and clean workflows. Available in 1.0 mL, 1.5 mL, 2.0 mL, 3.0 mL, and 5.0 mL, polypropylene, rated from −196°C to +121°C. All are gamma-sterilized and certified RNase-free, DNase-free, and non-pyrogenic. MBP carries Globe Scientific RingSeal vials and ships to labs across the US, Canada, and internationally.

What Are Internally Threaded Cryogenic Vials?

Internally threaded cryogenic vials feature screw threads located inside the vial neck, allowing the cap to sit within the vial opening rather than wrapping around the exterior. A silicone O-ring in the cap compresses against the vial rim when tightened, creating a secure, leak-resistant seal that remains stable at ultra-low temperatures down to −196°C.

Because the external surface of the vial neck remains smooth, internally threaded designs help reduce contamination risk and improve handling in biosafety cabinets and clean laboratory environments. They are commonly used for long-term storage of biological samples, including cell lines, serum aliquots, and microbial stocks.

What you'll discover:

  • 2D barcoded internally threaded cryogenic vials for digital sample tracking
  • SBS-format cryogenic vials designed for automated high-throughput systems
  • Multi-barcoded vials with side and bottom identifiers for inventory management
  • Non-barcoded internally threaded vials for routine laboratory storage
  • Side-barcoded cryogenic vials for rapid scanning workflows
  • Internally threaded vials available in 0.5–5.0 mL volume formats
  • Racked and bulk-pack cryogenic storage configurations
  • Leak-resistant vials with integrated silicone sealing systems

How to Choose Internally Threaded Cryogenic Vials

Volume selection
The 2.0 mL format is the most widely used for cell banking, serum aliquots, and general biostorage due to its balance between capacity and rack compatibility. Smaller volumes are used for high-density storage, while larger formats support tissue samples and high-volume biological materials.

O-ring material
Silicone O-rings are preferred because they maintain elasticity and sealing performance across cryogenic and autoclave temperature ranges. This ensures consistent leak protection during freezing and thawing cycles.

Self-standing vs round-bottom
Self-standing vials feature a stable base for bench handling without racks, improving workflow efficiency during labeling and aliquoting. Round-bottom vials require racks but are compatible with a wider range of storage systems.

Autoclavability
Most polypropylene vials with silicone O-rings are autoclavable at 121°C, but material compatibility should always be confirmed before sterilization to avoid deformation or seal failure.

Specifications Context

Internally threaded cryogenic vials are typically manufactured from high-grade polypropylene and are designed for storage temperatures down to −196°C in liquid nitrogen vapor or phase. Many are certified RNase-free, DNase-free, non-pyrogenic, and endotoxin-free to support molecular biology and clinical applications.

They are compatible with standard cryobox formats and are widely used in biobanking, GMP storage, and long-term specimen preservation workflows where sample integrity and traceability are essential.

Internally threaded cryogenic vials remain a core standard for secure biological storage across research and clinical laboratories. Contact the MBP team for pricing and availability.

FAQ

Internally threaded cryogenic vials have screw threads machined inside the cap neck; the cap inserts into the vial like a plug, matching the vial's outer diameter. The sealing surface is a silicone O-ring seated inside the closure that compresses against the vial rim at any temperature. These vials are manufactured from cryogenic-grade virgin polypropylene, rated from −196°C to +121°C, and are supplied sterile (gamma-irradiated, SAL 10⁻⁶), certified RNase-free, DNase-free, and non-pyrogenic.
Internal thread vials are preferred when contamination control is the priority. Because the threads are recessed inside the cap, there are no external grooves exposed to the lab bench, biosafety cabinet surfaces, or liquid nitrogen. This reduces the risk of contamination on the sealing surface during cap removal and re-capping. Internal thread is the standard recommendation for human cell lines, BSL-2 cultures, and any sample type where accidental cross-contamination between vials would compromise results.
Internally threaded cryogenic vials seal via a silicone O-ring seated inside the cap that compresses against the vial rim on closure, creating a positive leak-proof seal rated to 90 kPa. Silicone O-rings retain flexibility at −196°C where rubber O-rings would become brittle and fail. The O-ring seal is the key differentiator from external thread vials, which rely on a thermoplastic elastomer or co-molded seal integrated into the cap skirt.
Internally threaded cryogenic vials manufactured from polypropylene (PP) and sealed with a silicone O-ring are autoclavable at 121°C for 20 minutes in a standard gravity cycle. This allows re-sterilization of opened-but-unused vials, though most are supplied pre-sterilized by gamma irradiation and do not require autoclaving for routine use. Confirm the cap material is heat-stable before autoclaving any internally threaded vial; polypropylene caps are autoclavable, but caps containing polyethylene components may deform.
Internally threaded cryogenic vials are rated for vapor-phase liquid nitrogen storage (−150 to −190°C) and are the recommended format for vapor-phase use where contamination control is important. For liquid-phase LN2 immersion at −196°C, the silicone O-ring provides a more reliable seal than external thread designs, but the vial should still carry an explicit liquid-phase certification from the manufacturer before submerging in LN2.
Internally threaded cryogenic vials are available in 1.0 mL, 1.2 mL, 1.5 mL, 1.8 mL, 2.0 mL, 3.0 mL, and 5.0 mL volumes. The 1.8–2.0 mL internal thread vial is the most widely used for cell line banking and biospecimen storage, fitting standard 81-well (9×9) freezer boxes. The 1.2–1.5 mL format fits 100-well (10×10) boxes for higher-density storage. The 5.0 mL internal thread format is used for larger tissue samples and bacterial glycerol stocks.
MBP stocks Globe Scientific CryoClear and RingSeal internally threaded cryogenic vials in 1.0 mL, 1.5 mL, 2 mL, 3 mL, and 5 mL volumes with silicone O-ring seals, in self-standing and round-bottom configurations. All are gamma-sterilized and certified RNase-free, DNase-free, and non-pyrogenic. MBP ships to research, academic, and clinical labs across the US, Canada, and internationally and is a registered vendor for Howard Hughes Medical Institute, Vanderbilt University, and MD Anderson Cancer Center.
A standard 2 mL internally threaded cryogenic vial has an outer diameter of 12.5 mm and stands approximately 46–48 mm tall in a self-standing configuration. This 12.5 mm OD fits the wells of most 81-well (9×9) freezer boxes rated for vials up to 13 mm OD. Confirm vial OD against the box well inner diameter if mixing brands, as some manufacturers produce 2 mL IT vials at slightly different outer diameters (12.3–12.7 mm range).
