Internally Threaded Cryogenic Vials

What Are Internally Threaded Cryogenic Vials?

Internally threaded cryogenic vials feature screw threads located inside the vial neck, allowing the cap to sit within the vial opening rather than wrapping around the exterior. A silicone O-ring in the cap compresses against the vial rim when tightened, creating a secure, leak-resistant seal that remains stable at ultra-low temperatures down to −196°C.
Because the external surface of the vial neck remains smooth, internally threaded designs help reduce contamination risk and improve handling in biosafety cabinets and clean laboratory environments. They are commonly used for long-term storage of biological samples, including cell lines, serum aliquots, and microbial stocks.

How to Choose Internally Threaded Cryogenic Vials

Volume selection The 2.0 mL format is the most widely used for cell banking, serum aliquots, and general biostorage due to its balance between capacity and rack compatibility. Smaller volumes are used for high-density storage, while larger formats support tissue samples and high-volume biological materials.
O-ring material Silicone O-rings are preferred because they maintain elasticity and sealing performance across cryogenic and autoclave temperature ranges. This ensures consistent leak protection during freezing and thawing cycles.
Self-standing vs round-bottom Self-standing vials feature a stable base for bench handling without racks, improving workflow efficiency during labeling and aliquoting. Round-bottom vials require racks but are compatible with a wider range of storage systems.
Autoclavability Most polypropylene vials with silicone O-rings are autoclavable at 121°C, but material compatibility should always be confirmed before sterilization to avoid deformation or seal failure.

Specifications Context

Internally threaded cryogenic vials are typically manufactured from high-grade polypropylene and are designed for storage temperatures down to −196°C in liquid nitrogen vapor or phase. Many are certified RNase-free, DNase-free, non-pyrogenic, and endotoxin-free to support molecular biology and clinical applications.
They are compatible with standard cryobox formats and are widely used in biobanking, GMP storage, and long-term specimen preservation workflows where sample integrity and traceability are essential.
Internally threaded cryogenic vials remain a core standard for secure biological storage across research and clinical laboratories. Contact the MBP team for pricing and availability.
