Filtered Pipette Tips

What Are Filtered Pipette Tips?

Filtered pipette tips contain a hydrophobic aerosol-barrier plug — polyethylene (PE) frit or cellulose — embedded inside the tip body, positioned to intercept aerosol and liquid that would otherwise travel up through the tip collar into the pipette barrel during dispensing or when handling volatile or splashing samples. The filter protects the pipette barrel from internal contamination (which requires costly professional decontamination) and protects samples from cross-contamination by previously deposited nucleic acids, proteins, or biohazardous material in the barrel. Filtered tips are the standard consumables for PCR and qPCR setup, RNA extraction, cDNA synthesis, working with radioactive or biohazardous agents, and any workflow where a single contaminated barrel could compromise a run or an experiment. Non-filtered tips remain appropriate for routine buffer, media, and reagent dispensing where cross-contamination through the barrel is not a concern. Use filtered tips for all nucleic acid work, PCR, and biohazardous samples; use standard tips for routine buffer and reagent dispensing.

How to Choose Filtered Pipette Tips

Filter Material: Polyethylene Frit vs Cellulose Hydrophobic PE frits are the most common and most studied aerosol-barrier material; they block liquid ingress reliably without absorbing sample material or releasing fibres. Cellulose filters are used in some barrier tips (including the original Thermo Barrier tips); they are effective aerosol barriers but can absorb a small volume of aqueous sample, relevant at ≤10 µL, where the absorbed volume is proportionally significant.
Universal Fit vs LTS-Compatible Filtered Tips Universal filtered tips use standard collar geometry (3.8 mm for ≤10 µL, 6.1 mm for ≤200 µL) and fit Eppendorf, Rainin Classic (non-LTS), and Thermo pipettes. LTS-compatible filtered tips use Rainin's cylindrical LTS mounting geometry and are required for Rainin LTS pipettes.
Low-Retention Filtered Tips Low-retention filtered tips combine an aerosol barrier with a hydrophobic inner tip wall, reducing liquid adhesion during dispensing. They are recommended for small-volume (≤10 µL) nucleic acid work, RNA, protein, and enzyme dispensing, where both contamination protection and volume accuracy are critical.
Volume Range Filtered tips are available across 10 µL (P2–P10), 20 µL (P20), 100 µL (P100), 200 µL (P200), 300 µL, 1,000 µL (P1000), and 1,250 µL extended formats. Extended-length filtered tips reach deep into 15 mL and 50 mL conical tubes for nucleic acid elution and sample transfer steps.
Packaging Filtered tips are typically sterile-racked (96/rack, 10 racks/box); reload/refill formats are available for high-volume filter tip users.

Specifications Context

Globe Scientific filter tips are certified free of human DNA, RNase, DNase, pyrogens, and PCR inhibitors; sterile, in flip-top or hinged racks. Sorenson Bioscience universal filter tips span 10–1,250 µL in standard rack and EcoRack reload formats, pre-sterilised, DNase/RNase-free. Invitrogen Barrier Tips (Thermo Fisher) are the original reference for nucleic acid work with cellulose filter elements; compatible with Eppendorf pipettes. Globe Scientific, Nest Scientific, and Sorenson Bioscience filtered tips are stocked by MBP Inc.

What Are LTS-Compatible Filter Tips?

LTS-compatible filter tips combine two design features: the cylindrical collar geometry of Rainin's LiteTouch System (LTS), which mates with Rainin LTS pipette shafts for low-insertion-force ergonomic operation, and an integrated hydrophobic aerosol-barrier filter element that prevents aerosol droplets and liquid from reaching the pipette barrel. They are the required tip format for Rainin LTS labs running PCR, qPCR, RT-PCR, RNA extraction, nucleic acid dispensing, or any contamination-sensitive workflow where both LTS ergonomics and aerosol protection are needed simultaneously. LTS filter tips are the single correct format for Rainin LTS users doing PCR, RNA, or biohazardous work — no substitution with universal filtered tips is possible.

How to Choose LTS-Compatible Filter Tips

Confirm LTS Instrument Only pipettes displaying 'LTS' in the model designation — Pipet-Lite XLS+ LTS, Pipet-Lite M LTS, L8 LTS, L12 LTS — accept LTS tips. Standard Rainin models (older PIPET-LITE without 'LTS') and all non-Rainin pipettes require universal-fit tips, not LTS-specific tips. Low-Retention Filter Tips for Small Volumes Low-retention LTS filter tips combine the LTS mount, aerosol barrier, and hydrophobic inner wall. Use them when dispensing ≤20 µL of RNA, enzyme, or protein solutions where maximum volume recovery plus contamination protection are simultaneously required — the most stringent tip specification for Rainin LTS users. Volume Range Common LTS filter tip volumes: 20 µL, 200 µL, 300 µL, 1,000 µL, and 1,200 µL. Confirm the exact volume range available in LTS-compatible filter format from your supplier, as not all volumes are available in every format from every manufacturer. OEM vs Third-Party Rainin OEM filter tips for LTS are specified to the tightest cylindrical geometry tolerance. LTS filter tips are available in sterile racked and refill stacked-box formats with RNase/DNase/non-pyrogenic certification. For routine research use, third-party LTS filter tips offer equivalent performance at 20–40% lower cost. Packaging LTS filter tips are available in hinged racks (10 racks × 96 = 960 tips/box) and refill stacked-box inserts. Sterile options are standard across the range.

Specifications Context

LTS-compatible filter tips are manufactured from virgin polypropylene (PP) with hydrophobic PE filter frits; low-retention variants use hydrophobic resin for reduced surface adhesion. LTS filter tips: certified RNase-free, DNase-free, non-pyrogenic, CE and FDA-listed, in sterile refill stacked-box format. Multiple third-party manufacturers supply LTS-compatible filter tips at 20–40% below Rainin OEM pricing, with equivalent documented performance for research workflows.

What Are Universal Fit Filter Tips?

Universal fit filter tips combine two well-established features: the standardised collar geometry of universal-fit tips (3.8 mm collar for ≤10 µL, 6.1 mm for ≤200 µL, ~7.5 mm for ≤1,000 µL) and an integrated hydrophobic PE aerosol-barrier frit inside the tip shaft. The collar geometry enables cross-brand compatibility; the PE frit physically blocks aerosol droplets and liquid from entering the pipette barrel when over-pipetting, vigorous mixing, or volatile samples are involved. They deliver contamination protection equivalent to brand-specific filter tips at a cost appropriate for labs standardising on universal consumables. Universal fit filter tips are the default contamination-control tip for any lab with a mixed Eppendorf/Gilson/Rainin fleet running PCR, RNA, or biohazardous protocols.

How to Choose Universal Fit Filter Tips

Filter Material: PE Frit vs Self-Sealing Barrier Standard PE frit filters (Globe Scientific, Sorenson Bioscience, Nest Scientific) are hydrophobic sintered polyethylene that blocks aerosol and liquid without absorbing sample material — the most broadly specified filter type. Self-sealing barrier tips (e.g., Thermo Scientific ART) use a swelling polymer that expands on contact with liquid to create a complete seal; they provide reliable protection but at a higher cost and from fewer suppliers. Low-Retention Universal Filter Tips Low-retention universal filter tips add a hydrophobic inner tip wall to the PE frit. Use them at ≤10 µL for RNA, enzyme aliquoting, and small-volume nucleic acid work where both contamination protection and maximum volume delivery accuracy are required. Volume Range 10 µL: P2–P10 range; sequencing gel loading, micro-volume PCR setup. 20 µL: P20 range. 100 µL: P100. 200 µL: P200 — the highest-volume filter tip in most labs. 300 µL: for some extended P300 pipettes. 1,000 µL: P1000. 1,250 µL: extended high-volume format. Extended-Length Filter Tips Extended-length universal filter tips (200 µL and 1,000 µL) are 20–40 mm longer than standard, enabling aerosol-protected access to the bottom of 15 mL and 50 mL conical tubes during nucleic acid elution and sample transfer steps. Packaging Universal filter tips are typically sterile-racked (96/rack × 10 racks/box). Sorenson EcoRack reload inserts are available for high-volume filter tip users seeking plastic waste reduction.

Specifications Context

Universal fit filter tips are certified DNase-free, RNase-free, human DNA-free, ATP-free, pyrogen-free, and PCR inhibitor-free per independent lot. Virgin polypropylene construction; PE frits are hydrophobic, sintered polyethylene confirmed PCR inhibitor-free. Sterile racked tips are EO-sterilised or gamma-irradiated to SAL 10⁻³–10⁻⁶. Thermo Scientific ART universal filter tips use a proprietary self-sealing barrier; Globe Scientific and Sorenson Bioscience use PE frits. Sorenson Bioscience universal filter tips in standard rack and EcoRack reload formats are stocked by MBP Inc.
