There’s a new project that is taking its place in the laboratory, which has enabled on-site analysis of coastal organisms at around 100 locations around the whole of Europe. The very first-of-a-kind research has come all over here, from pioneering the use of mobile laboratories to understanding how Europe’s coastal ecosystems have been impacted by environmental factors. Molecular Biology’s Contribution To Environmental Science

Throughout the years, we have seen mobile truck laboratories that have brought state-of-the-art equipment and technologies to over 100 locations. These mobile truck laboratories have been seen in around 24 countries where scientists have done their sample collection. Later on, they analyzed it on the site. This was the first time when the researchers were able to carry out such detailed molecular biology research in the field only with the help of lab equipment like Kingfisher plastics or centrifuges etc. 

As we know, studying the ocean was always a bit more difficult than studying the land. There’s a plethora of challenges that include lack of visibility, pressure changes, salinity which can easily wreak havoc with equipment, and last but not least, high tides since we know that it might be a lack of standardization of hardware, surveying methodologies and systems for the collection of data.

Carrying out molecular biology research in coastal ecosystems has always been a challenging and difficult task, which takes a lot of courage and effort. On the other hand, organisms die during the transit to central laboratories, and this is the reason why TREC (Traversing European Coastlines) project brought the mobile laboratories to take on the complex technology which was a need to analyze samples in the field.

What Experts Have To Say

Edith Heard, director general of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), has said, ‘We realized that we have the technologies and the power to explore these land/water interface ecosystems in a completely new way”. The company is collaborating with TREC, Tara Ocean Foundation, and EMBRC (European Marine Biological Resource Centre).

Heard added, ‘We are bringing technologies to where life is happening, and where the scientists want to use them, as opposed to always having to rely on shipping things back to someplace that comes with the right material, the right machines.’ 

Since this project is initiated, there have been about 110 or more different sampling stops along Europe’s coastline as it kickstarts its operations from Roscoff in France. On every site, there’s a team that will lay transects from the Tara Foundation’s vessel’s anchor to the shore. Variations of soil, sediment, and water are taken as the sample for testing.

All of this will be analyzed in mobile labs, which come with microscopes, freezers, and equipment for preparing samples for their scientific purposes. These purposes include imaging, genomic, and metabolomic analysis. All of this can easily travel from one site to another site.

The approach is pretty much delivering better results. Senior scientist, ‘Detlev Arendt’ at EMBL has said, ‘We can see the biological structure of dinoflagellates as nobody has seen before, with many new organelles which are not known before, for which it will be going to take many a good time for unraveling their functions.’ 

He added, ‘We are expecting that there will be new protein complexes which will be described in the next couple of years, all thanks to the field data that is being generated.’

Adding Mobility To Labs

In some fields, which include healthcare, mobile labs are becoming common since they have mobility with high-end technology inside them. These mobile labs come in handy to take them anywhere you like and use them to their full potential. All of these mobile labs aren’t only mainstream in environmental science. TREC aims to work with all the biologists working in the field.

Manzella, a co-founder of the company, OceanHis, has stated that ‘based on first experiences, mobile laboratories can be a very important contribution for data collection methodologies, especially for implementing quality assurance and quality control protocols.’ 

The company is known for manufacturing and designing mobile mini-labs, which help in collecting ocean data in real-time. These mini-labs can be installed on different kinds of boats. They have an array of sensors that are used for collecting physical, geochemical, and biological data. Temperature, salinity, chlorophyll levels, blue algae, oxygen levels, conductivity, and turbidity, to name a few.

Manzella has stated, ‘The method is entirely different from the regular method of sampling and analyzing in the laboratory.’

The research which was carried out by the Trec project will add up knowledge about the sections of the European coastline that have to be surveyed. The organizations will combine the Trec data with the wide range of data that is available in existing EMODNET (European Marine Observation and Data Network) datasets. However, there will be new insights that will be unlocked. While focusing on the data, the work will continue to combine more biological and genetic information into EMODNET’s databases.

EMBL is hoping that these mobile labs will turn out to be a game-changing trend in the world and set a new standard for environmental molecular biology. The results have to be so accurate that they will be a reference point for other researchers.
