Laboratory PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) products are disposable or limited-use protective items designed to protect laboratory personnel, samples, and work environments from contamination and exposure risks. Common laboratory PPE includes shoe covers, bouffant caps, hair covers, disposable lab coats, sleeve covers, and other protective garments used in research laboratories, pharmaceutical manufacturing, clinical diagnostics, biotechnology facilities, and cleanroom environments.
Unlike general industrial PPE, laboratory PPE is specifically engineered for contamination control, low particle shedding, and compatibility with cleanroom and controlled-environment requirements. Many products are manufactured from low-lint, non-woven materials that help minimize particulate generation while providing comfort during extended wear.

Material and barrier level Non-woven spunbond polypropylene (PP) is lightweight, breathable, and low-linting — the standard material for general research labs and ISO 7–9 environments where particulate control (not liquid splash) is the primary requirement. SMS fabric adds a meltblown middle layer for enhanced barrier protection against aerosols and droplets, appropriate for pharmaceutical manufacturing and clinical diagnostic labs. PE-coated or PE-film materials provide liquid-resistant and waterproof barriers for chemical handling and wet-environment workflows. DuPont Tyvek is specified for chemical splash resistance and higher-durability applications. Cleanroom ISO classification General-purpose PP PPE (shoe covers, caps, lab coats) is rated for ISO 7 (Class 10,000) environments, covering the majority of research, academic, and pharmaceutical lab settings. Cleanroom-grade PPE with traceable lot numbers, lint-free fabric, and stitched or bonded seams is required for ISO 5–6 (Class 100–1,000) environments such as semiconductor, compounding pharmacy, and advanced biologics facilities. Latex-free requirement All polypropylene, SMS, and PE-based disposable PPE is inherently latex-free, satisfying latex allergy protocols without substitution. Confirm latex-free status for any glove or elastic-containing product when personnel latex sensitivity is a concern. Case count and floor stock Shoe covers are typically supplied 300 pieces (150 pairs) per case; bouffant caps in 1,000-piece cases (100 per bag, 10 bags). Match order quantity to weekly consumption to avoid over-stocking disposable items. MBP's Quick Order tool at mbpinc.net supports repeat case-quantity orders on PO for consistent floor stock replenishment.

Laboratory disposable gloves are single-use hand protection items worn to create a barrier between the user’s skin and biological samples, chemicals, pharmaceutical materials, and contamination-sensitive surfaces. Nitrile (nitrile butadiene rubber, NBR) is the dominant material in modern labs — it is latex-free, approximately three times more puncture-resistant than natural rubber latex, and chemically resistant to oils, dilute acids and bases, and many common organic solvents. Latex gloves retain higher elasticity and tactile sensitivity and remain preferred in applications where dexterity is more important than latex allergy concerns. Vinyl (PVC) gloves are a low-cost option used only for low-risk, non-hazardous tasks.

How to choose laboratory gloves

Material
Nitrile is the standard choice for most laboratories because it is latex-free, chemically resistant, and widely available in medical-grade specifications. It is suitable for molecular biology, clinical diagnostics, pharmaceutical QC, and general chemical handling. Latex gloves provide better elasticity and tactile sensitivity but carry allergy risks. Vinyl gloves are only suitable for non-hazardous tasks such as sample labeling or light cleaning duties.
Thickness
Thin gloves (around 3 mil) are used when high dexterity is required, such as pipetting or delicate cell work. Medium thickness (4–5 mil) is the standard for general laboratory use. Thicker gloves (6–8 mil) are used for handling hazardous chemicals or when higher puncture resistance is needed.
Medical-grade vs industrial-grade
Medical-grade gloves (AQL ≤ 2.5) are tested for tighter defect limits and are required for biological, pharmaceutical, and regulated laboratory workflows. Industrial-grade gloves (AQL 4.0) have higher allowable defect rates and are not suitable for contamination-sensitive or clinical environments.
Powder-free requirement
Only powder-free gloves are used in laboratories because powdered gloves can contaminate cell cultures, PCR reactions, and analytical instruments. Powdered medical gloves are no longer permitted in healthcare settings due to contamination and inhalation risks.
Chemical resistance
Nitrile gloves resist oils, dilute acids, dilute bases, and many solvents, but they do not protect well against strong ketones (like acetone), aromatic solvents (like toluene), or strong oxidizers. Selection should always match the specific chemical exposure and duration of contact.

Specifications context

ASTM D6319 defines requirements for nitrile exam gloves, including tensile strength and elongation standards, while ASTM D3578 covers natural rubber latex gloves. Medical-grade gloves must meet AQL 2.5 standards and often require regulatory clearance depending on the region and intended use. Standard packaging is 1,000 gloves per case (10 boxes of 100), with typical glove lengths around 9–9.5 inches and beaded cuffs for improved durability. As of 2026, powder-free nitrile gloves in the 4–5 mil range remain the most widely used disposable PPE item in research and clinical laboratories.

Gloves

What are nitrile laboratory gloves?

Nitrile laboratory gloves are single-use disposable hand protection items made from nitrile butadiene rubber (NBR), a fully synthetic material that contains no natural rubber proteins. Because of this, they are inherently latex-free and are widely used as the standard glove type in modern research, clinical, pharmaceutical, and diagnostic laboratories.
They are designed to provide a strong balance between chemical resistance, puncture resistance, and tactile sensitivity. Compared to natural rubber latex, nitrile gloves are typically around three times more resistant to punctures at the same thickness. Most nitrile gloves used in laboratories are medical-grade with AQL ≤ 2.5, meaning they meet strict quality control limits for defects and are suitable for regulated environments. ASTM D6319 defines their performance requirements, including minimum tensile strength, elongation, and barrier integrity.

Thickness and application
Nitrile gloves come in different thicknesses depending on the task. Thinner gloves (around 3 mil) are used for high-dexterity work such as pipetting, PCR setup, and delicate cell culture tasks where precision is important. Medium thickness gloves (4–5 mil) are the standard choice for general laboratory work, clinical diagnostics, and pharmaceutical handling because they balance protection and flexibility. Thicker gloves (6 mil and above) are used when handling stronger chemicals, hazardous reagents, or when additional puncture resistance is needed.
AQL grade
AQL (Acceptable Quality Level) indicates defect rate. Medical-grade nitrile gloves typically have an AQL of 2.5 or lower and are required for work involving biological samples, pathogens, or pharmaceutical materials. Industrial-grade gloves with higher AQL values are not suitable for regulated laboratory or clinical use.
Color selection
Nitrile gloves are available in different colors such as blue, black, and purple. Blue is the most common because it provides strong visibility and easy detection of tears or contamination. Black gloves are often used in industrial or chemical environments, while purple gloves are sometimes used in clinical settings to differentiate them from latex products. Color does not affect chemical protection or performance at the same thickness.
Chemotherapy and hazardous drug resistance
Some nitrile gloves are specifically tested under ASTM D6978 for resistance to chemotherapy drugs and hazardous pharmaceuticals. These are required in oncology, compounding pharmacies, and laboratories handling cytotoxic agents. Standard nitrile gloves without this certification should not be assumed to provide protection against these compounds.
Chemical resistance limits
Nitrile gloves provide good resistance to oils, alcohols, dilute acids, and many aqueous solutions. However, they are not suitable for strong solvents such as acetone, toluene, chloroform, or other highly aggressive organic chemicals. For those, specialized glove materials must be selected based on chemical compatibility charts.

Nitrile examination gloves are governed by ASTM D6319, which defines mechanical strength, elongation, and quality standards for medical-grade nitrile products. FDA-regulated exam gloves require 510(k) clearance for clinical use. Standard packaging typically includes 100 gloves per box and 1,000 gloves per case. As of 2026, 4–5 mil powder-free blue nitrile gloves with AQL 2.5 remain the most widely used glove type across global research and pharmaceutical laboratories due to their balance of safety, durability, and chemical resistance.
