Benchtop Recappers

What Are Benchtop Recappers?

Benchtop recappers are compact, motor-driven instruments that automate the opening and sealing of screw-cap or push-cap sample storage tubes in standard rack formats (24-, 48-, and 96-position). They are used in biobanks, clinical sample management laboratories, genomics core facilities, and other environments where large numbers of cryogenic or ambient-storage tubes require repeated capping and decapping. Manual recapping at scale is a leading contributor to repetitive strain injury (RSI) in high-throughput sample preparation workflows.

What you will find:

RFID-enabled racks for reliable sample tracking

SBS-format compatibility for standardized laboratory workflows

Automated capper and decapper functionality for improved efficiency

Secure and consistent tube sealing with CT™ caps

Compact benchtop designs that maximize laboratory space

How to Choose a Benchtop Recapper

Throughput Format (24 / 48 / 96)
Select the rack format that matches your primary tube storage system. A 96-position automated device can process a full rack in under 60 seconds, while a semi-automated 8-channel row decapper can complete a single row in under 5 seconds, making it suitable for moderate-throughput laboratories without full-rack automation requirements.
Cap Type Compatibility
Confirm whether your tubes use screw caps or push caps, as each requires a different capping mechanism. Screw-cap recappers apply a preset torque value, typically between 1 and 5 N·cm, and automatically stop when the proper seal is achieved. Push-cap systems rely on controlled vertical force. Multi-format adapters can support several tube brands within a single instrument.
Standalone vs. Integrated Systems
Standalone benchtop recappers are suitable for laboratories without dedicated automation infrastructure, while integrated models connect with Hamilton, Tecan, or Beckman Coulter workstations through SBS-format racks and software interfaces. Laboratories requiring LIMS connectivity and sample traceability should consider systems with built-in 1D and 2D barcode scanning capabilities.
Tube Diameter Range
Most automated recappers support standard collection tubes ranging from 13 to 16 mm in diameter and 75 to 115 mm in height. Verify compatibility with your cryovials or specialty microtubes before purchasing, particularly when using proprietary storage systems.
Maintenance Requirements
Pneumatics-free designs eliminate the need for compressed-air infrastructure and generally reduce maintenance demands. Pneumatic systems may offer high performance but require periodic servicing and access to a laboratory air supply.

Specifications Context

Rack format (24, 48, or 96 tubes) establishes the maximum throughput of a benchtop recapper. Torque settings must be compatible with the selected tube and cap combination, since excessive torque can crack caps while insufficient torque can lead to evaporation or contamination. SBS-format compliance ensures interoperability with industry-standard racks and automated workflows. As of 2026, many benchtop recappers incorporate IoT-enabled monitoring, barcode integration, and LIMS connectivity to improve sample traceability and reduce manual documentation requirements in high-throughput laboratories.
