Pipettors Accessories

What Are Pipettor Accessories?

Pipettor accessories are complementary tools and parts that support correct storage, calibration, maintenance, and identification of laboratory pipettors. Pipettors stored lying flat on a benchtop risk contaminating the nose cone and suffer tip ejector wear; vertical stand storage is the manufacturer-recommended practice for all brands. At a minimum, every lab needs a pipette stand to prevent bench contamination and a calibration tool to verify ISO 8655 accuracy without sending instruments out.

Pipette Stands and Carousel Racks Single-position vertical stands store one pipette upright, protecting the nose cone from surface contact. Six-position carousel stands rotate 360° and hold 6 pipettors of mixed sizes — the standard for a molecular biology bench set covering P2, P10, P20, P200, P1000, and P5000. Universal-format carousels (Eppendorf, Gilson, Rainin, Biohit, Thermo) accommodate most standard pipette body diameters; manufacturer-specific stands provide a precision fit. Wall-mount holder systems save bench space in smaller workspaces. In-Lab Calibration Tools Gravimetric calibration of a pipettor requires only a calibrated analytical balance (0.0001 g resolution), distilled water, and a calibration tool specific to the pipettor model for adjusting the piston stop. Manufacturer calibration kits (e.g., Gilson Pipetman Calibration Kit, Eppendorf calibration tool) allow in-lab ISO 8655 verification without sending pipettors to an external service. ISO 17025-accredited external calibration services (Gilson, Eppendorf, Rainin) issue certified calibration reports for GLP and regulatory compliance. O-Ring and Seal Service Kits Worn O-rings and seals are the most common cause of pipettor inaccuracy and tip leakage after physical damage. Service kits specific to each pipettor model (Gilson PIPETMAN service kit, Eppendorf Research Plus service kit) include O-rings, seals, and small springs for routine preventive maintenance. Gilson recommends preventive maintenance every 1–2 years or whenever calibration verification fails. Colour-Coding Rings Colour-coded silicone rings clip onto pipette barrels for quick volume identification, user assignment, or pre/post-PCR segregation in shared labs. Eppendorf ColorTag rings are available in 12 colours and 6 sizes compatible with all Eppendorf pipette models; universal-format rings fit most major brands. Charger Stands for Electronic Pipettors Electronic pipettors (Eppendorf Research Pro, Rainin Pipet-Lite XLS+) require charger stands or base docks for overnight charging. Charger stands also serve as storage; the Eppendorf Charger Stand 2 holds and charges a single electronic model on the bench.

Specifications Context

Pipettor stands should be used per all major manufacturer guidelines — Eppendorf, Gilson, and Rainin all specify vertical storage as the correct position to prevent liquid ingress into the piston. ISO 8655 calibration requires distilled water at 20°C, a balance with 0.0001 g resolution, and a minimum of 10 dispenses per volume setting. Eppendorf ColorTag rings are available in 6 sizes covering pipettes from 2 µL to 5,000 µL. Eppendorf, Gilson, and Rainin offer both in-lab calibration tools and ISO 17025-certified external calibration services.
