What are laboratory vacuum pumps?

Laboratory vacuum pumps are instruments that remove gas from a connected vessel or system to create sub-atmospheric pressure for applications including rotary evaporation of solvents, vacuum filtration through Büchner funnels and membranes, SpeedVac centrifugal concentration, gel drying, lyophilization rough vacuum, and degassing of solvents and solutions. MBP carries vacuum pumps from Vacuubrand, Welch, and ULVAC, which together cover the full range of laboratory vacuum needs from moderate filtration vacuum to deep vacuum for turbomolecular backing, available in oil-free diaphragm and oil-sealed rotary vane configurations.

How to choose between vacuum pump brands and types

Choose Vacuubrand for premium PTFE diaphragm and chemistry vacuum systems
Vacuubrand diaphragm pumps are known for their high-quality PTFE-wetted construction, precise chemistry vacuum control systems with automatic set-point regulation, and a broad range of configurations from single-stage to two-stage models, making them the preferred brand for demanding rotary evaporation and concentration applications where reproducible vacuum control is important.
Choose Welch for reliable, cost-effective diaphragm and corrosion-resistant vacuum
Welch (by Gardner Denver) diaphragm pumps offer solid performance for routine filtration and moderate vacuum applications at a competitive price point, with the Dryfast ULTRA series as their flagship oil-free, chemically resistant product line covering most common laboratory vacuum needs.
Choose ULVAC for applications requiring deeper vacuum
ULVAC rotary vane oil-sealed pumps achieve deeper ultimate vacuum levels than oil-free diaphragm pumps, making them appropriate for applications like thin-film deposition, high-vacuum instruments, manifold vacuum systems, or backing turbomolecular pumps, where vacuum levels below 1 mbar are required.
Check the accessories catalog for vacuum tubing, traps, and gauges
Accessories include cold traps and chemical traps to protect pumps from solvent and corrosive vapors, vacuum tubing (rubber, silicone, or PTFE), and vacuum gauges and controllers for monitoring and regulating applied vacuum.
Match ultimate vacuum and pumping speed to your application requirements
Ultimate vacuum determines the lowest pressure achievable, while pumping speed determines how quickly the system reaches and maintains that vacuum. Both must be matched to system volume and gas load from evaporation, filtration, or outgassing.

Specifications context

The choice between oil-free diaphragm and oil-sealed rotary vane pumps is primarily determined by required ultimate vacuum and chemical exposure. Diaphragm pumps provide oil-free, low-maintenance vacuum suitable for most chemistry and biology applications above ~1–5 mbar, while rotary vane pumps achieve deeper vacuum but require oil changes and carry contamination risk.
As of 2026, oil-free diaphragm pumps from Vacuubrand and Welch cover most standard molecular biology and chemistry vacuum applications, while ULVAC rotary vane and dry pumps serve specialized deep-vacuum requirements.
