What Are Pipette Tips?

Pipette tips are disposable polypropylene cones that attach to the shaft of an air-displacement pipette, forming the liquid-contact surface for aspiration and dispensing. The seal between the tip collar and the pipette shaft is the single most important factor in volumetric accuracy; a poorly fitting tip introduces systematic volume error that causes the instrument to deviate from its calibrated specification. Tips span micro volumes (0.1–10 µL) through standard (20–200 µL and 100–1,000 µL) to high-volume (up to 1,250 µL), with variants for filtered aerosol protection, low-retention liquid release, extended reach into deep vessels, and wide-bore dispensing of viscous samples.

How to Choose Pipette Tips

Collar Size and Pipette Compatibility Tip collar diameter determines fit: 3.8 mm collar for ≤10 µL pipettes; 6.1 mm collar for ≤200 µL; approximately 7.5–8.0 mm collar for P1000 pipettes. Universal fit tips use these standard collar sizes and are compatible with Eppendorf Research, Rainin Classic (non-LTS), Thermo Finnpipette, and Sartorius/BioHit. Rainin LTS and Eppendorf epT.I.P.S. use proprietary collar geometry and require instrument-specific tips. Filtered vs Non-Filtered Aerosol-barrier filter tips contain a hydrophobic PE or cellulose plug that blocks aerosol and liquid from reaching the pipette barrel; required for PCR, qPCR, and RT-PCR setup, RNA extraction, and work with biohazardous samples. Non-filter standard tips are appropriate for buffer, media, and reagent dispensing where cross-contamination through the barrel is not a concern. Low-Retention vs Standard Polypropylene Low-retention tips are injection-moulded from hydrophobic polypropylene with reduced surface energy or coated to minimise liquid adhesion on the inner wall. They improve accuracy at ≤10 µL and for dispensing viscous, protein-containing, or organic solvent samples. Standard PP tips leave small residual volumes in the tip after dispensing; this residue is negligible at 200 µL but significant at 2–5 µL. Extended-Length and Wide-Bore Extended-length tips (also called long tips or gel-loading tips) reach into deep 15 mL and 50 mL tubes, cryovials, and electrophoresis gel wells. Wide-bore tips have an enlarged aperture for dispensing viscous samples, cell suspensions, and tissue lysates without shearing. Packaging Format Hinged 96-tip racks are standard for manual pipetting. Reload inserts fit into reusable rack bases to reduce per-tip cost and plastic waste. Bulk bags provide the lowest cost per tip for non-sterile applications.

Specifications Context

Pipette tips are certified DNase-free, RNase-free, ATP-free, human DNA-free, PCR inhibitor-free, and pyrogen-free per independent lot testing. Virgin polypropylene free of additives, antistatic agents, and dyes is the standard material. ISO 8655 compliance for the pipette system depends on tip-pipette seal quality; confirm tip compatibility with your specific pipette model. Sorenson Bioscience universal and filtered tips, Globe Scientific, and Nest Scientific lines are stocked by MBP Inc.

Pipette Tips

What Are Universal Fit Pipette Tips?

Universal fit pipette tips use collar diameters standardised across most major air-displacement pipette brands, allowing a single tip product to seat on pipettes from multiple manufacturers. The three primary collar sizes are: 3.8 mm for ≤10 µL tips, 6.1 mm for ≤200 µL tips, and approximately 7.5–8.0 mm for P1000 tips. These collar sizes cover Eppendorf Research Plus, Rainin Classic (non-LTS), Thermo Finnpipette, Sartorius/BioHit, and VWR pipettes. Universal fit tips cover most lab pipettes at a lower cost per tip — the exception is Rainin LTS, which needs dedicated LTS tips.

How to Choose Universal Fit Pipette Tips

Volume Range: Match Tip to Pipette 10 µL universal tips (3.8 mm collar) cover 0.1–10 µL single-channel pipettes and the P10 range. 200 µL universal tips (6.1 mm collar) cover P20, P50, P100, and P200 pipettes. 1,000 µL universal tips cover P1000 pipettes and are available in standard-length and extended-length formats. 1,250 µL macro universal tips accommodate high-volume dispensing steps in the 1,000–1,250 µL range. Standard vs Filtered Universal Tips Standard universal tips are sufficient for buffer, media, and reagent dispensing. Filtered universal tips — with hydrophobic PE or cellulose aerosol barrier — are required for PCR setup, RNA work, and any contamination-sensitive application. Using filtered tips universally reduces contamination risk in shared pipettes at the cost of approximately 1.5–2× the price of standard tips. Low-Retention Universal Tips Low-retention universal tips minimise residual volume on the inner tip wall. This matters at ≤10 µL, where standard tips may retain 0.2–0.5 µL, creating a systematic under-delivery error. Sorenson's universal low-retention tips maintain compatibility with all major standard-collar pipettes. Packaging Format Racked (hinged 96-tip rack): standard for manual pipetting. Reload inserts: drop into reusable rack bases; 20–30% lower per-tip cost and reduced plastic. Bulk (non-sterile bag): lowest cost per tip for non-sterile buffer/media work. Sterile racked tips are required for cell culture, RNA, and clean applications. OneTouch / Ergonomic Formats OneTouch reload formats allow the full tip insert to be loaded into the pipette simultaneously, reducing repetitive-strain impact from individual tip-loading in high-throughput workflows.

Specifications Context

Universal fit tips are manufactured from 100% virgin polypropylene, certified DNase-free, RNase-free, ATP-free, human DNA-free, pyrogen-free, and PCR inhibitor-free per lot. Sorenson Bioscience universal tips are manufactured in a Class 100,000 cleanroom, pre-sterilised, and sold through MBP Inc. in standard racks, EcoRack reloads, and bulk formats. Universal fit tips remain the highest-volume tip category in North American research labs due to multi-brand compatibility and lower cost per tip versus pipette-specific variants.
If you’re setting up a workflow or mixing pipette brands in the same lab, it’s usually worth sorting tip compatibility early — it removes a lot of small daily friction that adds up over time. Contact the MBP team to get a tailored quote!

Universal Fit Pipette Tips

What Are Pipette Tip Refill Stations?

A pipette tip refill station consists of two components: a durable outer rack frame (typically polypropylene or polycarbonate) that holds tips at standard 9 mm well spacing, and disposable reload inserts — tip wafer trays pre-loaded with 96 tips — that drop into the frame to replace a depleted set. Once the insert is exhausted, the rack base is retained, and a new insert is loaded, rather than discarding the entire rack assembly. This system is designed for high-throughput labs that consume hundreds of racks per month; at that scale, the reduction in plastic waste (up to 60%) and per-tip cost (typically 15–30% lower than equivalent racked tips) is meaningful over a year. Reload inserts carry the same universal-fit collar geometry and purity certifications as standard hinged racks. Refill stations make economic and environmental sense when your lab replaces more than two full cases of racked tips per month.

How to Choose a Refill Station System

Rack Base Compatibility Reload inserts are designed to fit specific rack base models — they are not universally interchangeable. Confirm the rack base brand and model before ordering reload inserts; for example, Sorenson EcoRack reload inserts fit Sorenson EcoRack bases, USA Scientific LTS refill wafers fit USA Scientific racks, and Nest Scientific inserts fit Nest frames. MBP Inc. supplies matched rack bases and insert systems — contact the team if unsure which base fits your existing racks. Sterile vs Non-Sterile Inserts Sterile reload inserts (EO-sterilised or gamma-irradiated) are required for PCR setup, RNA work, cell culture, and any sterility-sensitive application. Non-sterile inserts are suitable for routine buffer, media, and reagent dispensing where the pipette and tip will not contact a sterile sample. Volume Range Refill inserts are available in the same volume range as racked tips: 10 µL, 200 µL, 300 µL (select formats), and 1,000–1,250 µL. Confirm that the same volume range is available for both the rack base and the reload insert from your supplier. Filter vs Non-Filter Inserts Filter reload inserts — with integrated aerosol-barrier elements — are available for labs requiring contamination protection in PCR or nucleic acid work. Non-filter reload inserts are the economical choice for routine liquid handling. OneTouch / Stacked Loading Systems Some refill formats (e.g., Rainin SpaceSaver, Sorenson EcoRack, Biotix reload) offer stacked magazine-style packaging where multiple inserts are stacked in a column; a fresh insert auto-advances when the previous is depleted, reducing tip-station restocking frequency in high-throughput workflows.

Specifications Context

Reload insert tips are manufactured from the same virgin polypropylene as standard racked tips, certified DNase-free, RNase-free, human DNA-free, ATP-free, and PCR inhibitor-free per lot. Rainin SpaceSaver inserts reduce plastic waste by up to 80% versus hinged racks using recyclable PETE packaging. Biotix uTIP reload inserts reduce plastic waste by 30%; Sorenson EcoRack inserts reduce waste by up to 60%. Sorenson Bioscience EcoRack reload inserts are stocked by MBP Inc. in 10 µL, 200 µL, and 1,250 µL volumes.
