 Semi-skirted PCR plates have a partial plastic border extending approximately half the height of a fully skirted plate, surrounding part of the well array. This partial skirt adds enough structural rigidity to support multichannel pipetting. It provides a surface for labelling, while keeping the overall plate height low enough for compatibility with most thermal cycler compression lids that a full skirt would obstruct. Semi-skirted plates represent the most common format in routine qPCR and genotyping labs, where fully automated robotic handling is not required.
