What Are Microcentrifuge Accessories?

Microcentrifuge accessories maintain performance, extend tube-format versatility, and ensure safe operation of benchtop microcentrifuges. These include replacement fixed-angle rotors for 12–24 × 1.5/2.0 mL tube positions, tube adapters for 0.5 mL and 0.2 mL formats, aerosol-tight sealed rotor lids for biocontainment of infectious specimens, balance tubes for partial-load runs, and specialty rotors for PCR strips or 5.0 mL tubes where supported by the centrifuge model. All microcentrifuge accessories are model-specific, as rotor coupling systems and tube bore dimensions differ between manufacturers and even between models within the same brand, making exact model verification essential before ordering.

What You Will Find:

High-quality adapters and rotors for precise and reliable tube fit

Multiple formats including PCR strips, microtubes, plates, and spin columns

Specialized and high-capacity rotors for enhanced compatibility

Swing-out and sealed options for reliable and contamination-free processing

How to Choose Microcentrifuge Accessories

Replacement Rotor Identification
The rotor model number is typically printed on the rotor body or listed in the centrifuge user manual. Cross-reference it with the manufacturer's accessory catalog to confirm that the coupling system matches the centrifuge motor shaft. For standard 12-position rotors, verify compatibility with both 1.5 mL and 2.0 mL microtubes.
Tube Adapter Sizing
For 0.5 mL adapters, ensure the outer diameter closely matches the rotor bore so the tube remains secure during operation. For 0.2 mL adapters, confirm that PCR tubes are positioned correctly to achieve the intended centrifugal force while maintaining stability throughout the run.
Aerosol-Tight Sealed Lids
Choose sealed lids rated for the rotor's maximum operating RCF. O-rings should be inspected regularly for flattening, cracking, or discoloration and replaced immediately if any signs of wear appear. Maintaining replacement O-rings for frequently used lids helps ensure continued safe operation.
Specialty Rotors
Some microcentrifuge models support optional rotors for 5.0 mL tubes, PCR strips, or microplates. These accessories expand workflow flexibility but may operate at lower maximum RCF values than standard 1.5 mL rotors. Always verify the rated speed and force limits before use.
Balance Tubes
Balance tubes help maintain proper rotor balance during partial-load runs. They should closely match the mass and dimensions of the sample tubes being processed. Proper balancing reduces vibration, minimizes bearing wear, and supports long-term centrifuge performance.

Specifications Context

Many modern fixed-angle rotors and polypropylene adapters are autoclavable, although specific sterilization requirements vary by manufacturer and material. Always follow the OEM maintenance and decontamination guidelines for each accessory. Rotor service life is generally determined by cumulative operating hours and manufacturer recommendations rather than visual appearance alone.
Sealed rotor lid systems with one-touch release mechanisms have become standard in modern molecular diagnostic laboratories, providing improved safety, easier maintenance, and enhanced biocontainment for regulated workflows.
