Pipette controllers are battery-powered or mains-powered motorised instruments that hold and actuate glass or plastic serological pipettes (1–100 mL) for accurate, ergonomic medium-volume liquid transfer without manual mouth-pipetting or rubber bulbs. Variable-speed aspirate and dispense control, a hydrophobic inline filter protecting the motor, and a universal cone accepting all standard serological pipette diameters are the core features.

A pipette controller (also called a pipetting aid, motorised pipette filler, or pipette boy) is a battery-operated instrument that accepts and drives 1–100 mL glass or plastic serological pipettes, replacing the rubber bulb, Pi-pump, and manual mouth-pipetting techniques. A motorised rotating wheel or roller generates controlled airflow to aspirate and dispense liquid at variable speeds; a hydrophobic 0.2 µm inline filter prevents liquid and aerosol from reaching the motor. Controllers accept all standard serological pipette diameters (1 mL to 100 mL) through a silicone or rubber cone adapter. They are the standard dispensing tool for media preparation, cell culture reagent transfer, serial dilutions in large volumes, and reagent bottle-to-flask transfers. The disposable consumables used in the instrument. A pipette controller is required for safe, ergonomic use of serological pipettes in any volume from 1 mL to 100 mL — the rubber bulb is not a recommended alternative.

Power Source: Battery vs Rechargeable vs Mains
Battery-powered controllers (AA or rechargeable internal battery) provide cordless flexibility across the bench and BSC. Rechargeable lithium-ion controllers offer 8–10 hours of continuous use per charge and charge from a base stand. Mains-powered controllers provide continuous operation without charge interruption — preferred in high-throughput cell culture facilities.
Speed Control
Two-speed controllers offer slow (for precise fill) and fast (for rapid dispense) modes. Variable-speed controllers with a continuous-pressure or stepless trigger allow fine-tuned flow rate adjustment for viscous media, delicate cell suspensions, or filling against gravity into narrow-neck vessels.
Filter: Inline 0.2 µm Hydrophobic Filter
A 0.2 µm hydrophobic inline filter is the critical protection component — it prevents liquid from entering the motor during accidental over-aspiration. Filters should be replaced when liquid reaches the filter or when flow resistance increases noticeably; replacement filters are sold separately for most models.
Universal Cone Compatibility
Confirm the controller's cone adapter accepts your pipette brand's tip diameter. Most controllers use a silicone or rubber cone that accommodates 1–100 mL serological pipettes from Falcon, Globe Scientific, and Nest Scientific without adapters.
Autoclavability
Controllers intended for BSC and sterile cell culture use should have an autoclavable cone, nose piece, and filter assembly. They have autoclavable lower sections; the battery/electronic module is not autoclavable.
Standard pipette controllers accept serological pipette diameters from 1 mL (narrow shaft) through 50 mL and 100 mL (wide-body). Replacement 0.2 µm hydrophobic filters are sold in packs; filter replacement interval is typically every 6–12 months or immediately after liquid ingress. It has a runtime of approximately 8 hours per charge on a single lithium-ion battery.
